Chapter 16 Renting an Apartment in the City

Early in the morning, Zhao Hanyun was pulled out of bed by her mother to catch the first bus of the morning. As the bus jolted along the bumpy road, Zhao Hanyun felt her stomach churning. The sleepiness that had lingered since she woke up suddenly dissipated. Zhao Hanyun slumped weakly onto the seat, missing the wide roads and the comfortable air-conditioned buses.

After nearly an hour of hard work, Zhao Hanyun and her daughter finally arrived at their destination. Compared to Zhao Hanyun's pale face, Yan Jinlan looked really good, and she was full of hope. In short, she was in great shape.

"Mom, please walk slower, let me take my time." Zhao Hanyun dragged his weak legs and had to get some water from the space to drink, and then he felt much better.

"You just need to exercise more. Look at me, I'm busy every day, and I'm in good spirits! How could I get carsick?" Yan Jinlan looked at her daughter with disgust. She was too weak and lacked exercise.

Unable to convince his own mother, Zhao Hanyun speechlessly followed and hooked his mother's arm, which slowed down Yan Jinlan's speed.

"Mom, how are you going to get the things out when you run to the market empty-handed?" Zhao Hanyun had wanted to ask this question for a long time. It wouldn't be possible for her to perform magic with nothing in front of everyone, right?

"Huh? I really haven't thought about it yet..." Yan Jinlan then realized that she seemed to have thought it was too simple. When it came to actually doing it, she felt unprepared for many things.

"Let's go. Let's go find a warehouse first. Aren't there a lot of empty houses waiting to be rented next to the vegetable market? Let's find a small one to stay first. Mom, do you have money with you?" Zhao Hanyun was convinced. Fortunately, she asked her grandfather and found out that there were quite a few empty houses near the vegetable market.

The environment was better than back home, with only a few bungalows still standing among the high-rise buildings. While not the skyscrapers of later times, it still exuded a sense of prosperity. Zhao Hanyun and her daughter walked through the corridors between the buildings. The vegetable markets were built in areas with large residential areas, and residents would rent out their spare rooms to earn some extra income.

Zhao Hanyun was looking for a remote location that wouldn't obstruct traffic. Shop owners wouldn't typically rent in these places, at most, migrant workers seeking a cheaper place to live. While many people migrate for work these days, in a still-developing fifth-tier city like this, the number of migrant workers was still relatively small. Zhao Hanyun had decided: before people realized the value of real estate, she'd rent a place to use as a warehouse. When she had more money, she'd buy a house to grow its value. Back to the point, Zhao Hanyun and her daughter took a look around and actually found a rental in an alley. It was actually quite large, with the door right in the alley, so passersby wouldn't notice it, but it wouldn't hinder their commuting. It was just around the corner from the alley and close to the market—all the conditions suited Zhao Hanyun's ideal.

"This place is nice. My daughter has good taste." Yan Jinlan liked this relatively secluded house very much. After making up her mind, she went there according to the address posted on the door. The landlord was an old lady who lived not far away, in the house next door. She was surprised to hear that Zhao Hanyun and her daughter wanted to rent her house. She and her husband bought this house together to prepare for their retirement, but their children were filial and did not let them live alone, so it has been vacant for some time. Because of its remote location, no one paid attention to it. The old lady was surprised that someone wanted to rent it, so she quickly asked someone to call her husband back. The old couple thought about it and saw that Yan Jinlan and her daughter were quite honest, especially Zhao Hanyun, who was fair and tender, with a sweet mouth and was good at calling people. When they heard that the house was rented out for use as a warehouse, they agreed to rent it to Zhao Hanyun and her daughter. The price was also quite reasonable, 100 yuan a month. Both parties had to pay the rent for half a year first and write an agreement and keep it safe.

Yan Jinlan brought out one thousand yuan today. She had not thought about renting a house, but she brought some money with her just in case, and it came in handy. Although she felt a little painful that several months' living expenses were gone, when she thought about having a warehouse and being able to sell things, she had to grit her teeth and give the money. She would just earn the money back.

After getting the key, he roughly tidied up the house. The old man often came to clean it, so it wasn't too dirty. While Yan Jinlan was out taking out the ashes and taking a walk, Zhao Hanyun quickly took out the two bags he had prepared from the space and put them in the corner. That way, when Yan Jinlan went out with the two bags later, no one would notice. There were still many people selling vegetables in the city.
