Chapter Thirty-Nine: The Guardian

In the dimly lit room, the bronze lamp on the round table flickered with candlelight.

There were ten seats in total, and no one was absent this time. However, on the bronze lamp carved with human figures, the flame was like a candle flickering in the wind, as if it might be extinguished at any moment.

The candlelight cast a shadow in the center of the round table.

The projection includes mountains, rivers, animals, and plants. The scene is not static because it is a microscopic projection of the entire continent.

However, in the capital city of the Ultra Empire, space was distorted, causing the entire image of the capital to become blurry.

"You have probably already received the reason for gathering you all. The God of Light has descended upon the world, and the will of the world has commanded us to drive Him away. Now, everyone, please share your thoughts." Behind the bronze lamp engraved with human figures, the being in the black robe began to preside over the meeting in his aged voice.

"Humans, our opponents are gods. How much of a chance do you think we have?" The dwarf was the first to speak, but he seemed somewhat hesitant before the battle even began.

"Fifty percent. If the gods ignore our attacks and use the power of the world, we should be able to complete the expulsion," the human replied.

"In other words, if the God of Light attacks us, we will all perish," the elf said in a deep voice.

“That’s right.” The human’s aged voice sounded very weak.

“We are not only the guardians of the world, but also the last spark of civilization. This incident is ultimately just an internal strife of your human race. The God of Light cannot descend upon a region without faith. We cannot gamble the future of our race for your sake.”

The mermaid spoke quite forcefully this time, making it clear that she was not willing to take any risks.

"Then let's vote," the human said calmly, though his voice sounded increasingly old and weary.

"Go," "Don't go," "Don't go," "Don't go," "Go"...

Ultimately, two votes were in favor, seven votes were against, and the newly joined dragon abstained.

Humans stared silently at their increasingly faint candlelight.

"Human, you have defied the will of the world. Your virtual authority may be stripped away. Is that alright?" the giant asked honestly. He had the best relationship with humans, and he was the one who cast the other vote in favor just now.

"It's alright. As long as there's no one to replace me, the world's will won't strip me of my authority. Even Marlowe, whom I have high hopes for, is unlikely to survive today since he's already in the capital," the human said calmly. He had anticipated this outcome, and although he was still disappointed, he had accepted it.

······

"What has she turned into?" Marlowe exclaimed in mid-air.

When the divine light descended, Marlowe instinctively sensed danger. His sixth sense told him he should close his eyes, but this time he did not choose to follow the intuition that had saved him from death countless times.

The entire population of the capital was behind him. If even he was afraid, then who else could resist this disaster?

As that sacred figure came into his view, his eyes inevitably ignited with holy flames.

The Holy Flame was unstoppable. Compared to the Undying Flame that Leviathan had just used, this was a much higher-level flame. Marlowe's fighting spirit and power of law were unable to resist it this time.

Only when his eyes were burned into two bloody holes, and the wisp of holy flame was about to spread along his flesh to other places, did the irresistible rule that empowered the holy flame finally disappear. Marlowe quickly used his battle qi to extinguish the flame.

Marlowe saved his life but lost his sight, but at this moment, his greatest concern was not his own health, but the people of the city.

Even if there were no absolute rules on the Holy Flame, ordinary people would still be unable to resist it. Moreover, ordinary people do not have a sense of danger, so they could not avoid the light in advance. Marlow simply could not imagine how many people had perished in that instant.

"Hiss." Marlow tried to use his mental energy to explore the situation in the capital, but as soon as his mental energy tentacles extended from his body, he felt a burning heat. He felt as if his soul was about to burn, which scared Marlow so much that he quickly disconnected his perception.

Does this mean that not only physical observation, but also mental spying is considered a transgression?

Marlowe gave a wry smile. The being that Virginia had become was beyond his comprehension. Even the Demon King, the ultimate enemy of mankind recorded in history books, was not this terrifying.

The only being comparable to this one is a god who exists only in people's imagination.

But even if it is a god, when it begins to harm the world, Marlowe will never stand idly by. There is no need to investigate what its purpose is; its very existence is a threat to humanity.

Can it be stopped? How can it be stopped? Marlowe doesn't know.

This will be the most desperate battle he has ever faced, but as long as it is a battle, Marlowe will never consider backing down.

Recalling the last glimpse of the location, and aiming at Virginia's position, Marlowe gently swung his sword.

At this moment, Marlowe activated his senses to the maximum.

His sword strike was merely to cut through the air, the sword energy dispersing the surrounding gas. But when it encountered resistance, the fluctuations in the airflow would change, allowing Marlowe to pinpoint Virginia's location.

He came back, and as the airflow returned, Marlowe knew that Virginia had not moved.

The next step is to test that being.

Although it was a test, Marlowe still mobilized all his fighting spirit. Facing such a being, holding back would be tantamount to courting death.
