Chapter Two: A Glimmer of Hope

"Hey, system, what exactly are you good for?"

As Wu Yu struggled through the desert, he would occasionally ask his useless system questions. After experiencing the ups and downs of life, Wu Yu no longer had any expectations. He just wanted to complain about this particularly human-like system.

"Hmph, this system is full of wonders, you just haven't activated me yet. You'll know the benefits of this system when the time comes." The system always showed off its superiority.

"Heh." Wu Yu chuckled coldly. It's like someone telling you that you can inherit billions after you die—it's useless. Oh well, do your best and leave the rest to fate.

Even though Wu Yu felt he was doomed, he still managed to take some measures to save himself.

Wu Yu is indeed a homebody, but he has a wide range of interests. In order to show off in his spare time, he also explores some interesting knowledge, such as methods of identifying directions.

Wu Yu has a silver mechanical watch worth tens of thousands of yuan. Because of his mobile phone, it no longer serves the purpose of telling time and is just a pure decoration. But now he can use it to tell his location.

Wu Yu lays the watch flat and points the hour hand towards the sun. The direction that the bisector of the hour hand and the 12 o'clock line point to will never change.

Although he couldn't distinguish east from west because he was in another world, there was no need for Wu Yu, who didn't have a map of this other world, to figure out his direction.

All he had to do was make sure he didn't get lost in the desert. The rest was just about going in one direction and seeing where he was going to get out; whether he could make it out was purely a matter of luck.

However, it seems that Lady Luck did not favor Wu Yu this time. After a difficult day of travel, all Wu Yu could see was still the yellow sand covering the ground. The only change was that the height of a few sand dunes was different.

As the sun set, Wu Yu stopped walking. Without the sun as a landmark, it was easy to go in circles in the desert, and continuing would only be a waste of energy.

After walking all day, especially in such sandy terrain where you sink with every step, Wu Yu was exhausted, his legs ached terribly, and he hadn't eaten anything, so he really needed to rest.

Knowing that the temperature difference between day and night in the desert is extreme, Wu Yu, being a man of common sense, did not throw away the down jacket during the day. Now he was using it to keep warm.

Wu Yu sat on the ground, wearing the down jacket, gazing up at the starry sky. It wasn't that Wu Yu disliked the dirt on the ground and didn't want to lie down and rest; he was just afraid that he would be buried alive by sand when he woke up.

But doing so would only delay his death. In his situation, with no supplies available, Wu Yu was certain he wouldn't live more than three days. No, perhaps he would lose his basic mobility by tomorrow, and all that would be left was to face death in despair.

Actually, if I could just sleep like this and never wake up again, that would be the most comfortable way to die.

But he was still a little unwilling. Although the system was a bit of a rip-off, it was still a cheat code. A bright future was already laid out in front of him. As an ordinary person, how could Wu Yu say the word "refuse"?

After a moment of reflection, Wu Yu finally confirmed one thing by observing the starry sky: such dazzling stars were clearly not something that Earth, suffering from severe air pollution, could possess. Moreover, after looking for a long time, Wu Yu still couldn't find the Big Dipper. This must be another world.

Sleep, maybe everything will be better when you wake up. Consoling himself like this, Wu Yu closed his eyes.

"Host, it seems you're already in a death throes. Can't you take some proactive measures to save yourself?"

Wu Yu started to get irritated again. This kind of unavoidable, forced-into-his-head voice was really annoying, but he still chose to answer. After all, telepathic communication wouldn't waste any energy.

"I've done my best. I'm not a wilderness survival expert. It's impossible to survive for long in such a harsh environment as the desert."

"Tsk, what a useless thing to do." This ill-tempered system has no idea how to comfort people.

"Did you disturb my sleep just to make sarcastic remarks?" Wu Yu replied irritably. He wanted to complain more, but in the end, he just sighed.

"Forget it, arguing with you is pointless. As far as you are concerned, you can bind to the next host after I die. Think about my behavior of going to great lengths to give someone a cheat code. I guess you could call it being friendly."

What if the system says you still have a chance?

"Really!" Wu Yu exclaimed in surprise, but his expression then darkened. "Are you kidding me? I haven't even activated you, so how could I possibly use you? Besides, with such a nasty personality, how could you possibly help me?"

"It's just basic reconnaissance. Even if the system isn't activated yet, it's easy to do this. You just need to tell me if you want to know."

"Of course I want it." Wu Yu said without any hesitation. He wasn't being stubborn; even if he disliked the system, he wouldn't risk his life.

"Listen carefully, there is a spatial rift in the direction you are heading today. Just keep walking and you should be able to see it."

Wu Yu waited for a long time, but the system didn't respond.

"That's it?" Wu Yu said through gritted teeth, his voice filled with endless resentment.

Wu Yu's heart was in his throat, and he didn't dare to breathe loudly, afraid that he might have missed something. In the end, he only got such a strange answer, and Wu Yu felt like his lungs were about to explode with anger.

"Still not enough? Anywhere you go besides that direction is a dead end. This system has already eliminated all the wrong options for you. Are you so stupid that you can't even do a multiple-choice question with only one option?" The system seemed to be constantly trying to mock Wu Yu.

"Uh, if that's the case, why didn't you say so earlier?" Wu Yu said, rubbing his forehead.

"Because this system only sensed that strong spatial fluctuation just now. Do you think this system should know things that you don't know?" The system made it sound perfectly natural, even though it was admitting its own incompetence.

"Tch, he was just saying he was omnipotent before," Wu Yu muttered to himself.

"Hey, this system can read your thoughts directly. Let me tell you, this system is extremely dissatisfied with your behavior of complaining about it."

"Tsk, what a petty person." Wu Yu pouted, completely ignoring the system's warning. "I'm a dying man, do you think scaring me will work? You can wait until I'm successful before I come crawling back to you."

"Aaaaah, how dare these mere humans be so arrogant! Unforgivable! Unforgivable!"

The proud system had never suffered such an insult before, and it erupted in fury in Wu Yu's mind. However, Wu Yu did not respond to it, but instead endured the noise and closed his eyes to rest. Now that there was a glimmer of hope again, Wu Yu was determined not to let it go.
