"You can eat whatever you want, but you can't say whatever you want. Did you hear what I said? If you're so capable, repeat it."
The debate below was quite noisy, with the prevailing opinion being that Wu Yu was doomed. However, Wu Yu didn't take any of this to heart; in fact, he found it amusing. Once his opponent stepped onto the stage, Wu Yu also stopped thinking about it.
Before the match began, Wu Yu placed his hand on his magic robe, and with a thought, he retracted the robe, revealing the combat suit he was wearing underneath.
Since the goal is to win through swordsmanship, it is necessary to take off this cumbersome robe.
Actually, magic robes are quite useful for mages. Because there is a casting delay, in order to avoid being killed by the enemy in one hit, mages have put a lot of effort into their appearance. A true mage will inevitably wear a lot of accessories such as rings, earrings, and pendants, not for decoration, but to carry as many magical artifacts as possible that can be cast instantly.
Given the sheer size of the magic robes, clever mages certainly wouldn't leave them idle; they are often covered with defensive magic arrays that can automatically release magical shields.
Fortunately, the use of all magical artifacts except for staves was prohibited in this competition, otherwise Wu Yu, who was penniless, would have suffered a great loss. After all, even the mage robe he had just bought was just a pure decoration without even a magic circle engraved on it.
Wu Yu's opponent was a somewhat thin-looking boy, but he had a cold and arrogant expression and did not take Wu Yu seriously.
Since they weren't friendly, Wu Yu wasn't going to put up with it. He patiently waited for the match to begin.
"Begin!" came the referee's command.
The opponent reacted immediately.
"Burning" [Fire Spell]
The incantation was completed in one breath, and a raging fire broke out at the tip of the staff in his hand.
Wu Yu had seen this move in "Detailed Explanation of First-Order Magic". It was a popular first spell for low-level mages. Compared to other first-order spells, this flame of several hundred degrees should be the most lethal. However, it was a pity that the flame could not be shot out, so it could only be considered a melee move. In close combat, Wu Yu really wouldn't have even the slightest chance of losing.
Having lost interest in his opponent, Wu Yu decided to end the boring battle directly.
"Consolidate." [Magic Shaping]
The magic was instantly drained, covering Wu Yu's staff like mud.
Releasing his grip, the staff naturally fell to the ground, while Wu Yu grasped the sword hilt that had solidified at the tip of the staff. With a flick of his wrist, Wu Yu held the black sword in front of him, assuming a standard fighting stance.
"What is this guy trying to do? Isn't this supposed to be a contest of magic usage? Does he want to fight like a brute?"
"That's despicable. They're completely exploiting loopholes in the rules. Without defensive magic devices, how could a mage possibly be a match for a swordsman in the early stages?"
The scene was in complete chaos, mainly because Wu Yu's outrageous move was so unexpected.
"Hmph, a mere trick." The other party was clearly not expected Wu Yu to do this, but he still tried to remain calm and shouted.
Wu Yu, not wanting to give the other party any more time to chant, charged forward with his sword drawn.
With his physical abilities already at the limit for ordinary people, Wu Yu now unleashed a speed that even a weak magician could hardly match.
The opponent was clearly flustered, and in a panic, he hurled his magic staff toward Wu Yu's direction.
A tongue of fire streaked through the air as the flames flew. Faced with this chaotic attack, Wu Yu simply slowed down abruptly, allowing the flames to glide past him unharmed.
Then, with another burst of speed, Wu Yu successfully closed in on his opponent, placed his sword against his neck, and without even having to shout surrender, the referee declared Wu Yu the winner.
The kill was instantaneous, just as easy and swift as expected.
"So strong!" someone exclaimed from the audience.
"What's so great about him! He just took advantage of a loophole in the competition. If we were fully equipped, even if we just stood there and let him hack at us, do you think he could cleave our magic shield with a single sword strike?" Someone was speaking up for Wu Yu's opponent.
"Didn't you guys notice? This guy's speed is just too fast, it's not something a mage could possibly have. Did he secretly use [Muscle Strengthening]? But isn't his first-tier spell [Magic Shaping]?" Some of the more observant people noticed something else.
But no matter what others speculated, it had nothing to do with Wu Yu. He put away his staff and, as agreed, walked toward the arena where Phillis was.
Along the way, Wu Yu also took a look at other people's matches, and the battle scenes were, to put it mildly, indescribable.
Or they learn a ranged spell like [Stone Shot] and snipe from the middle gate. Not only is the hit rate extremely poor, but the power is also pitifully small. Even if you manage to hit it, it's barely a scratch.
Looking at the results, it seems that those who learn melee magic have a higher win rate. Some reckless individuals even managed to win by simply hitting people with their staffs.
When Wu Yu arrived at the arena where Phillis was, he found that Phillis was no longer there, but two other guys he didn't recognize.
No way, it's over already?
"Wu Yu, over here, over here," Phillis called out from afar, waving.
Wu Yu walked over and comforted him, saying, "Don't take it to heart. As the saying goes, victory and defeat are common occurrences in war, and failure is the mother of success. You'll win back in the future."
“What are you talking about? I won,” Phillis said smugly.
