Chapter Twenty-Two: Taking the Blame

The village chief, who was lying behind Ma Nan, was still fast asleep, but this did not affect Ma Nan. He continued to walk briskly, leading the villagers to Wu Yu.

Ma Nan simply stood there, and the group of people who had just been hostile to Wu Yu were immediately drawn away from him. They stared at Ma Nan angrily, wishing they could tear him apart alive.

Manan didn't take the rabble seriously, but looked directly at Wu Yu and said with emotion, "I never expected that Lord Abaddon and Lord Asadron would perish together, and the tunnel to the Demon Realm recorded in the ancient books has not been opened."

"Why did you come back?" Wu Yu wasn't in the mood for idle chatter, so he chose to get straight to the point.

“We’d like to see what relics Lord Asadron has left behind?” Manan replied.

"Heh." Wu Yu sneered, "Asadron has been supporting you bunch of thieves for so many years, and you don't even let people go after they're dead. You're really disgusting."

“I had no choice,” Ma Nan replied calmly.

"Lord Asadron is dead. Without a source of income, we must abandon our village and live among the outside world. I have been outside, and life there is worse than in the village, but that is for the rich. The lives of the poor are worse than those of pigs and dogs. For the future of my fellow villagers, I must obtain Lord Asadron's legacy."

"Since when can plunder and extortion use such high-sounding reasons? You are nothing but a bunch of bandits who cannot survive without robbing others. To the world, you are pests in human society," Wu Yu said disdainfully.

“Maybe that’s just how it is, but I still have to do what I need to do.” Manan wasn’t angry; instead, he readily admitted it.

“But I have another question. Since you are so familiar with Asadron, don’t you know what treasures he has? He sleeps almost every day. You should have plenty of opportunities to steal his treasures.”

"Lord Asadron's true treasures are all in his storage ring. Even when he is asleep, it is protected by a barrier, so it is impossible to steal them. We can only make a little money from the dead. It is thanks to the wealth of those treasure thieves that the villagers can survive."

"Do you know what's inside that storage ring?" Wu Yu suddenly realized something crucial, though it was irrelevant to the current situation, but he still asked.

"Nobody knows, but it's something that's been passed down by word of mouth among the village chiefs. The dragon's ring contains treasures that could rival the wealth of a nation, and our ancestors have stayed here for generations to obtain that ring," Ma Nan replied.

Who were your ancestors?

"They were the first dragon slayers, but they all failed and suffered incurable injuries. They chose to live in this area, integrate with the surrounding residents, and left behind an ancestral precept: if you cannot kill the dragon, you should serve it. When the dragon dies of old age after a thousand years, you will naturally obtain all its treasures. I never thought that our generation would finally be able to complete this historical mission." Ma Nan said, a little wistful.

But the storage ring was completely empty. Wu Yu finally understood. Asadron didn't actually have any treasure. He had deceived the first group of treasure hunters, and as long as he lived, this lie would never be exposed.

His purpose in doing this was to make those greedy people fall completely into the abyss of desire, so that they would be deceived by the demon he was impersonating, and break the seal here for him, thus creating an opportunity for him to kill the demon.

It's so cruel. For their own selfish desires, they've been exploiting these villagers generation after generation, and countless people have been sacrificed in the process. This twisted sense of justice is disgusting to even think about. What right do they have to choose who gets abandoned?

The word "justice" is indeed only worthy of the strong; the weak have no right to defend justice.

Wu Yu has always believed that he is just a somewhat hypocritical good person.

I wonder what kind of despairing expression these people will have when they learn the truth.

"So you want that ring, huh? Then come with me," Wu Yu said to Ma Nan, feigning an understanding expression.

Wu Yu took the lead and walked towards the exposed cave. Wu Yu was not fast. After a moment of hesitation, the others followed Wu Yu.

After becoming a first-order superhuman, Wu Yu's brain did not become smarter, but his thinking speed and memory improved significantly. Now, Wu Yu can even recreate the original structure of the cave in his mind.

Recalling the location where the evil dragon once stood, Wu Yu wandered aimlessly as if on a picnic, but in fact his eyes were always focused on his feet. Who could have imagined that the evil dragon's treasure, which they regarded as a precious gem, would be thrown into this ruin like trash?

Wu Yu, with his sharp eyes, quickly spotted the storage ring. He strode over and picked it up.

No one expected that the dragon's treasure would be found so easily. It wasn't until Wu Yu put the ring on his index finger and played with it for a long time that they realized what was happening. They stared at the storage ring in Wu Yu's hand with burning eyes, but no one dared to step forward.

"Hahaha, the dragon's treasure is mine!" A joyous voice came from afar. About a hundred meters away from the crowd, the light distorted slightly, and then a figure suddenly appeared, approaching Wu Yu with ghostly speed.

The newcomer turned out to be the thief who had fled early. As a sixth-level thief, his speed was arguably the fastest among everyone present. However, by the time his laughter reached the ears of those present, he was already less than ten meters away from Wu Yu. Disturbed by his voice, even Ma Nan, who was also a sixth-level thief, did not react in time.
