Chapter One: Encountering Mountain Bandits

"Wow, the weather is really nice today!"

Wu Yu rested his head on his right hand, gazing at the white clouds in the sky, and suddenly spoke with emotion.

Since leaving the desert, Wu Yu has found the inland climate to be particularly comfortable.

After nearly a month of arduous travel, Wu Yu and Jack are almost at their destination.

Although the journey was a bit arduous, Jack took good care of Wu Yu. When they arrived at a road that had been opened up by humans, Jack immediately bought a carriage. Otherwise, walking for a month would have definitely broken Wu Yu's legs.

However, the back seat of this carriage was a bit too simple, as it was completely open to the elements. But some straw was laid out, and a quilt was placed over it. Wu Yu lay on it, and although he felt a slight bump, he could barely bear it.

Jack was driving ahead at that moment, and given his taciturn nature, he wouldn't utter a single word unless absolutely necessary.

Wu Yu's earlier remarks were meant to encourage Jack to join in the conversation, otherwise it would be too boring, but Jack didn't react at all.

Wu Yu was a little disappointed, so he started talking to himself, "Jack, you said yesterday that we could get to your house before this evening. Could you tell me about your family's personalities first? I want to prepare in advance on how to get along with them."

"They're nice people, you can do whatever you want with them." Jack dismissed Wu Yu with a single sentence, showing no intention of continuing the conversation.

"Tch." Wu Yu snorted coldly, no longer wanting to make a fool of himself.

He then turned his attention to his surroundings, trying to calm his mind with the beautiful scenery.

Even with his eyes dry from looking at it, Wu Yu still felt nothing. He finally realized that appreciating nature was simply not suitable for a science student like himself who had grown up in a big city.

Helpless, Wu Yu continued to let his thoughts wander. After staring at the scene for a while, he suddenly joked, "Jack, I think this place is really a good place to rob, with no village in sight, narrow roads, and treacherous terrain. Do you think there might be bandits here?"

“Yes,” Jack suddenly replied.

But his words startled Wu Yu. Jack's tone showed no doubt; he directly confirmed his assumption.

"No way, there really are bandits!" Wu Yu exclaimed as he sat up.

But Wu Yu quickly relaxed and forced a smile, saying, "Haha, I really like to scare myself. Even if there really were bandits, it's unlikely that we would run into them by chance."

Everything's been going smoothly for a month now, how could things suddenly go wrong just as we're getting home? That would be too dramatic. You know, this is life, not a novel.

“No, we’ll definitely run into them. There’s a magician among the bandits, and this area is covered with magic arrays that can sense anyone passing by. Judging by the time, they should be arriving soon,” Jack said calmly.

"Then why are you still so calm? And since we know there's danger, why don't we just take a detour? Why are we walking into a trap?" Wu Yu said anxiously, "Quick, turn around, let's run!"

However, as soon as Wu Yu finished speaking, a flock of birds took flight from the surrounding woods, and then a group of burly men with fierce expressions rushed out from all directions, surrounding Wu Yu and his companions.

Seriously? Are you serious?

Surrounded by a group of burly men, and seeing the gleaming blades in their hands, Wu Yu immediately cowered.

But seeing how calm Jack was sitting in front of him, Wu Yu instantly understood something.

This shows absolute confidence in one's own strength. That makes sense. If a band of bandits were truly exceptionally powerful, they would never engage in such plundering and robbery. Wouldn't it be better to kill monsters and get rich?

Wu Yu's expression returned to normal. He stood up from the carriage, a cold smile playing on his lips, and pointed at the group below with an arrogant look, cursing...

"You bunch of bastards who were born of mothers but not raised by fathers, do you enjoy robbing and killing for money? Have your consciences been eaten by dogs? You even become bandits, exploiting your own kind. You're really something else. Let me tell you, I, Uncle Wu Yu, am here today to rid the people of this scourge. I'll give you three seconds to kneel down and surrender, or I'll show you what it means to be rewarded for good and evil, and the cycle of cause and effect."

They'd been robbing people their whole lives, and they'd never encountered anyone more arrogant than this.

The bandits below were stunned, but soon, a few of them burst into laughter, looking at Wu Yu as if he were an idiot, while most of them looked wary and even quietly took a step back.

Jack then got off the carriage. Wu Yu thought he was about to teach the bandits a lesson and was ready to watch the show.

But to everyone's surprise, Jack was bowing and scraping, saying, "I'm sorry, he just went crazy because his arm was bitten off by a wild beast. Please don't take it personally, gentlemen. May I ask how much toll you would like to charge?"

"No way! So you're so confident because you're already prepared to pay up? Dude, you should have told me beforehand! I'm feeling my legs shaking as these menacing-looking guys stare at me." Wu Yu wailed inwardly.

But Wu Yu's reaction was incredibly swift. As if he hadn't noticed the growing anger on the faces of the people below, he stood with his hands behind his back, looked up at the sky, and roared, "I am the Sword God of this era! With a single sword strike, I can tear the heavens apart! You cowards, hurry up and die!"

Wu Yu felt cold sweat pouring down his back. Just when he felt his expression was about to break, a burly man with a scar on his face waved his hand and said, "Forget it, there's no need to argue with a madman."

Scarface seemed to be quite prestigious among the crowd, as the men who had already drawn their knives put them down again.

Scarface looked at Jack again and said coldly, "Two silver coins for each head, and 20% of the goods."

"Wasn't it always one silver coin per person, with a 10% cut on the goods?" Jack frowned and asked, puzzled.

"Oh, I didn't recognize you. You're a regular customer." Scarface smiled and said, "But I'm sorry, the prices have gone up recently."

"Oh? Prices went up? Who raised the prices?" Jack continued to ask.

"Who else could it be but our boss, Lone Wolf Croton, of course," Scarface said smugly.

"Oh, I see."

Jack nodded, tilting his head back to stare at the scarred man who was almost two heads taller than him. His gaze gradually turned cold, and he announced in a very indifferent tone...

"Then you'd be better off listening to what I'm about to say on your knees."
