Chapter 7 The Scholar Husband's Desperate Need for a Son (6)

Does Zhiyue dislike Song Tangyin?

Chu Yuan didn't believe it.

Why was Chu Ping able to bribe Zhi Yue? Besides the lure of money, one of the conditions was that after she won over Song Tangyin, she would make Zhi Yue her concubine.

Zhiyue was born into a poor family and lived a humble life from a young age. It was hard for her not to be moved by Song Tangyin's kind and gentle temperament. Moreover, becoming a concubine was different from being a maid; after all, a concubine was half a mistress.

However, the original owner took the initiative to buy a respectable young man from outside the family without even asking his head maid, Zhiyue, if she was willing.

Holding a grudge, Zhiyue immediately got involved with Chu Ping!

Moreover, Zhiyue understands Chu Yuan very well. She knows that Chu Yuan is jealous. If it weren't for the sake of having offspring, she would never have tolerated Song Tangyin having other people around her.

The situation in the capital is different from that in Fuping County. A woman's background is very important. Zhiyue knows this. If she insists on seducing Song Tangyin at this time, she will most likely be forced to have her child removed after giving birth. In that case, Chu Yuan will be the one who benefits.

So she endured it all, willingly becoming Chu Ping's executioner for a better future.

Chu Yuan deliberately exposed this to give Zhi Yue a false impression.

She might not need to rely on Chu Ping to become a concubine...

Sure enough, Zhiyue's expression became quite interesting.

Chu Yuan smiled and gestured for Zhi Yue to put the hairpin in her hair. "Let's go, it's time to pay our respects to Mother."

Zhiyue was absent-minded, but she was slightly distracted when she saw Chu Yuan dressed in her finest attire.

When did you become so beautiful, madam?

Her long hair cascaded down her back, her skin was as smooth as jade, fair with a rosy glow, and the sunlight streaming in from the window added a warm glow to her beautiful features.

The woman, sitting quietly and gracefully, was captivatingly beautiful, like a peony in full bloom—so noble, beautiful yet unpretentious.

Zhiyue had always known that Chu Yuan was beautiful, but her beauty in the past lacked soul. Now, however, she was dazzling and captivating.

"What are you daydreaming about? Let's go!" Chu Yuan didn't care whether Zhi Yue was shocked or jealous, and walked out of the courtyard gate with a leisurely air.

She was going to meet with Madam Song Kang and her scheming older sister-in-law.

Compared to Chu Ping, these people were no pushovers either.

This eldest sister-in-law, in particular, can't stand seeing others doing better than her; she's a total troublemaker.

And then there's her son, Wei Peng, a troublesome child.

Chu Yuan's first miscarriage was caused by five-year-old Wei Peng accidentally bumping into her. At that time, she and Song Tangyin had just been married for two years and their relationship was very close. After losing the child, Chu Yuan was depressed, but she couldn't blame a five-year-old child.

Seeing that she was upset, Song Tangyin brought Wei Peng to her and asked him to apologize. However, when her sister-in-law heard about this, she started crying, making a scene, and even threatened to hang herself, saying that she had bullied a child. Her biased mother-in-law also gave her a good scolding because of this.

For the first time, the naive Chu Yuan experienced the feeling of suffocation.

Although I have suffered many grievances over the past year, they are nothing compared to the blame I have for losing my child in a car accident.

After that, Song Xiuer disliked her even more, constantly opposing her, speaking ill of her and slandering her in front of Song Kangshi.

Song Kangshi then became even more critical and nitpicky towards her.

This displeasure stemmed from the fact that Chu Yuan's second miscarriage was even more pronounced, and now, with her third miscarriage, Song Kangshi acted as if she knew nothing about it.

Even her maidservants couldn't be bothered to send anyone to check on her.

This clearly shows that they are being treated coldly.

Chu Yuan sighed. Her mother-in-law might not come to see her, but as a daughter-in-law, she couldn't be willful and not pay her respects to her mother-in-law.

When we arrived at Songhetang, the room was full of people having breakfast.

The stern-faced elder sister-in-law, the fat-headed and big-eared nephew Wei Peng, and the indifferent-looking Song Kangshi, as if everyone owed her money, ate with great joy.

"Mother. Elder sister-in-law." Chu Yuan greeted them politely, even pinching her nose as she bowed.

However, as soon as she stood up, Song Xiuer immediately spoke in a sarcastic tone, "Oh, who do we have here? It's my sister-in-law whom we haven't seen for half a month. I heard you had another miscarriage? I say, sister-in-law, your body is really too weak, completely unsuitable for childbearing. It's a pity that our Song family only has Tang Yin as the male heir now. Tang Yin has an inescapable responsibility to carry on the family line. You're just dragging him down!"

Song Xiuer's words resonated perfectly with Song Kangshi.

She slowly put down her chopsticks, not even glancing at Chu Yuan, but instead affectionately patted her chubby grandson Wei Peng's head, "Oh, our Peng'er is eight years old this year, isn't he? Time really flies!"

The implication is that Chu Yuan has been childless for so many years, which has prevented her from even holding her own grandson.

In her eyes, Chu Yuan was beautiful but useless because she couldn't bear a son; she was a worthless person.

Her son suffered a tremendous loss.

But she didn't consider that if it weren't for Chu Yuan's father's help, Song Tangyin's career might not have been so smooth.

"Grandmother, Peng'er will be nine years old soon. Peng'er will study hard and become a top scholar to bring glory to Grandmother in the future." Wei Peng said indistinctly with his mouth full of braised chicken and duck.

As he spoke, he glanced at Chu Yuan with his eyes narrowed into slits.

He held her in utter contempt.

My mother said that this beautiful aunt is a blockhead, and she's also wicked. She even wronged the children!

He disliked his aunt, but the food at his uncle's house was really good. He could eat chicken, duck, fish and meat as much as he wanted, even early in the morning. He wished he could live at his uncle's house, who was a top scholar, for the rest of his life.

Wei Peng knew that if he wanted to stay in the Song family for a long time, he had to please Madam Song Kang, so he showered her with compliments as if they were free.

Upon hearing this, Madam Song was overjoyed, her eyes practically disappearing into her teeth. "Good boy, our Peng'er is so sensible, unlike some people who, despite their age, have no idea what they should or shouldn't do!"
