Chen Sisi didn't bring much with her; much of what she had left was still in the countryside.
As she packed, she made plans. Once they settled in the city, they would return to Jinfeng Village, bringing everything they needed, especially "that" thing, which was crucial to finding Niu Niu's biological father and could not be left behind.
Soon, she and Niu Niu's clothes were packed up.
Standing at the door with the bag in her hand, she saw Gu Chengfeng awkwardly making funny faces, just to make Niu Niu laugh, and her lips unconsciously curled into a smile as well.
A warm glow emanated from her, and she said with a hint of anticipation, "Gu Chengfeng, Niu Niu, let's go!"
Gu Chengfeng's ears twitched slightly, and he excitedly lifted Niu Niu up with both hands and spun her around: "Let's go, let's go home..."
With the 700 yuan dowry brought by her uncle, she took a train for several hours and finally arrived in Jiangcheng, the provincial capital.
Just as I exited the station, a large green Jeep parked on the roadside honked its horn a few times.
Feng Yanzhou rolled down the car window and immediately noticed the matching scarves worn by Shen Sisi and Gu Chengfeng.
Wow, that's so enviable!
He smiled broadly, his eyes crinkling: "Sister-in-law, Niu Niu, over here..."
Chen Sisi was surprised that he would come over, and quickly turned around: "Why are you here so late at night?"
"Of course, it was Old Gu who ordered us to pick you up. In the dead of winter, we couldn't let you and Niu Niu walk back."
Shen Sisi was flattered and surprised, never expecting Gu Chengfeng to be so considerate.
"Thank you, Gu Chengfeng, and Political Commissar Feng, you've gone to so much trouble."
Feng Yanzhou smiled and waved his hand, his eyes showing great satisfaction. He had thought that Old Gu, this rough and uncultured man, would die alone, but wasn't this quite right?
"Hehe, it's no big deal."
Gu Chengfeng didn't say as much as he did; he simply took Chen Sisi's cloth bag and opened the car door for her.
"Get in the car."
As she thoughtfully got into the car, he naturally reached out and shielded her head with his hand.
Soon, the car door closed, shutting out the cold wind from outside.
After exchanging a few pleasantries, Feng Yanzhou's gaze darkened slightly: "Sister-in-law, I've already reported to the Commander about your marriage certificate. It will take some time, you know how it is with procedures... Just stay in the family compound during this time."
Is it really a good idea to move in before getting married?
Will this affect Gu Chengfeng?
Shen Sisi looked worried, and unconsciously tightened her grip on Niu Niu.
Gu Chengfeng glanced at her without showing any emotion, and seeing her furrowed brows, he assumed she was shy.
"You can stay here without worry. I'll stay in the barracks tonight and come back during the day."
Feng Yanzhou was almost driven crazy while driving. He had just said that Lao Gu had finally figured things out, but now he was acting foolish again. How can they develop feelings for each other if they don't live together?
He stared straight ahead, then exclaimed, "Sorry, Lao Gu, some comrades from the Northwest Military Region are here for training today, so your bunk is gone!"
Gu Chengfeng knew that the Northwest Military Region had sent people to study, but he didn't expect them to take up his dormitory.
Since he's already taken it, what can he say?
Seeing that he remained silent, his face darkened, and she realized that he was worried about accommodation.
"Senior Gu...why don't you come back and stay here? Niu Niu and I can go and stay outside."
"That won't do!" Gu Chengfeng's face darkened further, and he said without further ado, "If anyone's going, it'll be me. You all stay home."
Feng Yanzhou laughed and said, "Neither of you need to go, the new house is spacious..."
Reminded by him, Gu Chengfeng realized that he had been promoted to deputy regimental commander and his room was no longer a one-bedroom apartment, but had multiple rooms.
"A new house?" Shen Sisi asked curiously.
Feng Yanzhou was both amused and exasperated. Gu Chengfeng hadn't told Shen Sisi about the promotion yet; he was really tight-lipped.
He deliberately kept everyone in suspense: "You'll find out soon enough..."
The jeep drove on and soon arrived at the military family compound, stopping in front of a courtyard.
The rectangular yard isn't big, but it's enough; it's perfect for growing flowers and such.
The house, made of bluestone bricks, is square and only one story high, yet it is a stand-alone building, quiet and spacious.
Upon seeing this room, Chen Sisi was dumbfounded.
Are battalion commanders all treated this well?
Gu Chengfeng also raised his long eyebrows in surprise. It was the first time he had ever seen this, and he was quite taken aback.
Feng Yanzhou got out of the car, opened the courtyard gate first, and then helped carry the things.
Chen Sisi, holding Niu Niu, followed him hesitantly. As soon as they entered the house, they saw that it was empty and there was not much furniture. Fortunately, everything inside and outside the house was new and very clean.
"From now on, this will be our little home." Gu Chengfeng put down his things and looked at Chen Sisi and Niu Niu with a smile.
Unable to contain her excitement, Shen Sisi looked up at the large house.
Yes, I finally have a home...
Feng Yanzhou was also a little teary-eyed.
I was worried that Gu Chengfeng would be lonely living alone in such a big house, but now he has a wife, children, and a warm bed.
"Well, sister-in-law, please do as you please. I need to talk to Old Gu about something..." Feng Yanzhou gave Gu Chengfeng a wink, and the two walked into the courtyard one after the other.
Chen Sisi held Niu Niu and walked around the room.
The house looks quite big, but it actually only has two bedrooms.
She shared a room with Niu Niu, and Gu Chengfeng shared a room; it was just right.
Niu Niu shook her head with curiosity, turning it left and right, her eyes almost dazzled by the sight.
The new house is so beautiful, with snow-white walls and glass windows, unlike their rural home, where the paint is peeling off, one window is made of paper, and it leaks wind in winter and rain in summer.
Most importantly, every new home has a light, so we no longer need to use kerosene lamps.
