We went inside, sat down, and had some tea.
Looking at the pile of gifts on the ground, Zhao Shilan felt both happy and distressed: "You've come all this way, why did you bring anything else..."
There are so many, it's like a marriage proposal procession.
It was more than what her daughter Tingting received when Yang Huaidong first came to her house. She didn't know whose child it was, but the child must be quite well-off.
Gu Chengfeng sat properly next to Shen Sisi, his strong back straight, and he also called Zhao Shilan "Aunt" along with Shen Sisi. His attitude was polite and courteous, completely different from before.
"Auntie, this is just a small token of my appreciation for taking care of Sisi all these years," Gu Chengfeng said politely, his sharp edge concealed.
Chen Sisi sat down with Niu Niu in her arms, picked up her enamel cup, blew on the tea leaves on the surface, and drank it all in one gulp.
Zhao Shilan had a good impression of the young man. She looked at him thoughtfully and said in a reproachful tone, "Don't just drink your tea, take care of Comrade Gu too."
Chen Sisi almost choked, and then her aunt's rapid-fire words came through her ears: "Little Gu is a good kid, he's polite and caring... Tell your aunt how you met him."
How could your aunt know so much about him after just meeting him?
As for how we met...
Shen Sisi's face turned bright red. She couldn't very well say that she had encountered danger on her blind date and that Gu Chengfeng had descended like a god to save her!
She lowered her head, unsure how to begin, when Gu Chengfeng smiled frankly beside her: "I'm Teacher Shen's student, and I've known Sisi for a while."
It was glossed over in a single sentence, and while it was explained, it was as if it hadn't been explained at all.
Then he changed the subject, casting a subtle glance at Chen Sisi: "By the way, Niu Niu is a little sleepy, you and Auntie should go and take care of the child first."
Chen Sisi frowned; this was clearly an attempt to get them out of the way.
Did he want to talk to his uncle alone?
She knew that her uncle was an unreasonable person and that Gu Chengfeng had a bad temper; if they disagreed on a few words, they might start fighting.
She was never worried about Gu Chengfeng when it came to fighting; she was only afraid that he would be punished if he hit someone.
"Is there anything you can't say in front of me and your aunt?" Shen Sisi asked anxiously.
Gu Chengfeng mischievously raised an eyebrow, and disregarding Zhao Shilan and Chen Jianguo's presence, quickly leaned close to her ear: "Of course it's our marriage..."
The scalding heat was frightening; Chen Sisi felt as if she had been burned.
She shrank back awkwardly, and after a long while, she leaned closer to the man in front of her, reminding him in a tone only the two of them could hear: "You don't know my uncle very well. He's not easy to talk to, and I'm afraid..."
Gu Chengfeng's eyes were filled with laughter: "Don't worry, I can handle even the most difficult enemies. You go and take care of Niu Niu. I guarantee your uncle will be happy to see you off."
Shen Sisi thought he was too optimistic; he had never seen his uncle's unreasonable and irrational behavior.
She was about to speak when Zhao Shilan tactfully pulled Chen Sisi away.
"Sisi, come in with me, I have something to ask you."
Once the door was closed, Chen Sisi was temporarily isolated from the outside world.
Anxiety was evident in Chen Sisi's eyes, and her tightly furrowed brows were almost never relaxed.
"Mommy, sleepy..." Niu Niu yawned, snuggling uncomfortably in her mother's arms, her eyelids almost closing.
She quickly bent down and put Niu Niu down, her fingers methodically unbuttoning Niu Niu's cotton-padded jacket, taking off the little one's outer clothes and pants, then helping her urinate on the spittoon before tucking her into the blanket and thoughtfully tucking the corner of the blanket in.
Niu Niu went out on a blind date with her early this morning, and now she was so sleepy that she fell asleep as soon as her head hit the bed.
As soon as the little one closed her eyes, Zhao Shilan pulled her to sit down at the table.
“Sisi, tell your aunt honestly, what does this young Gu’s family do? What’s going on between you two?” Zhao Shilan was a discerning person and could tell at a glance that Gu Chengfeng’s feelings for Shen Sisi were quite unusual.
Chen Sisi took a deep breath and stared at Niu Niu in a daze: "I don't know much about his family background. Since he was able to join the army and even become a battalion commander, his family background is fine. As for the rest... Auntie, my marriage with him is just a marriage of convenience, each of us getting what we need."
"Agreement?" Zhao Shilan found the word quite novel.
"It's just about living together. I need his city residency so I can take Niu Niu to the city for medical treatment; and he happens to need a wife, so we hit it off, didn't we?" Shen Sisi said casually.
Although Zhao Shilan hadn't received much formal education and wasn't as clever as Sisi's mother, she understood the situation perfectly as someone who had been through it all.
"Comrade Gu is a soldier, so he should be in good shape. Not to mention his figure and looks, he could have a long line of suitors. He could find a virgin even if he closed his eyes. How could this be..." She didn't mean to hurt Shen Sisi, but some words just slipped out.
Chen Sisi pursed her lips tightly, her expression deep and solemn.
If he hadn't been injured, he would have been a prodigy, and there would have been no need for her to ponder.
Can I tell my aunt this?
cannot!
Chen Sisi sighed helplessly: "Don't ask anymore. Anyway, we've discussed it and reported it to the political commissar. We're just waiting to go through the procedures."
Zhao Shilan knew that she had always been a strong-willed person since she was a child, but she didn't expect her to be so strong-willed, making a decision about marriage so easily.
It seems that Niu Niu's condition is not good.
She turned to look at the sickly little girl on the bed. Even in her sleep, her brows were furrowed, and her breathing was audible with phlegm in her lungs. She looked like she was suffering.
Looking at Chen Sisi in front of me, she was such a sunny and energetic child back then, a little princess who was cherished and raised.
Everything has changed in the past few years since I went to the countryside.
"Your aunt understands your suffering. I don't have much to give you. I secretly saved up a hundred yuan to buy you bed sheets and blankets when you get married. You can use this money sparingly; I can't give you any more."
