Chapter 33 Reflections, You Are a Good Mother

Yang Qiuxia's scalp is still swollen and she can't even touch it; it hurts terribly.

Otherwise, she wouldn't have been out in the cold wind to reduce the swelling.

This thoughtful woman made her lose face in the afternoon and even forced her to write an apology letter.

She had already embarrassed herself enough, but when she came back, Old Chen gave her another beating.

Yang Qiuxia was so angry she gritted her teeth: "Just you wait, I'm not done with you yet!"

As soon as she finished cursing, she felt a pair of terrifying eyes staring at her in the darkness, making her feel a chill run down her spine.

She was so frightened that she quickly ran inside and locked the door.

Perhaps she had caught a chill from the wind, because Chen Sisi sneezed twice in the room.

She had already changed into an old cotton-padded jacket and quietly went to the kitchen to wash the medicinal herbs she had bought.

After washing the herbs, she placed them on the cutting board before going to wash up and go to bed.

The next day, before dawn and before the reveille had sounded, Chen Sisi opened her eyes.

She glanced at Niu Niu sleeping soundly beside her, then tiptoed to her feet.

Then, fully armed, with a thick old scarf covering his face, he picked up the basket and sickle he had prepared beforehand and headed towards the back of the mountain.

Behind the military compound, there is a large hill.

The forest there wasn't dense, but it was full of weeds and wild grasses, including many medicinal herbs. Even in winter, the forest remained evergreen and didn't wither.

Shen Sisi discovered this forest by chance, as if she had found a treasure trove.

Holding a sickle in one hand and prying wild chrysanthemums and other medicinal herbs with the other, she wielded the sickle with great energy.

These unwanted wildflowers and weeds were all gold nuggets that she could exchange for money.

She worked quickly and soon gathered enough for her needs, filling almost half of her basket.

Before dawn and before Niu Niu woke up, she had to sneak back quickly.

Chen Sisi didn't dare turn on her flashlight and hurried along in the dim light.

Just as she was about to turn the corner and reach her doorstep, she suddenly caught a glimpse of a figure out of the corner of her eye. The figure was holding a small bottle and stumbling towards the back of the mountain.

She instinctively hid, then stole a glance—it was Zhang Xiuhong!

Zhang Xiuhong was acting very strangely. Her hair was disheveled, her eyes were lifeless, and she was silently shedding tears as she walked towards a less crowded alley. What she was holding in her hand... was paraquat!

Chen Sisi's heart sank; she sensed something terrible was about to happen, and, feeling uneasy, she quietly followed him.

Sure enough, as soon as Zhang Xiuhong reached the edge of the woods, she unscrewed the bottle of paraquat: "Die, then it'll all be over..."

She tilted her head back to drink it, but before she could even raise her wrist, Chen Sisi darted out, knocked the medicine bottle away, and kicked it into a pile of weeds in the distance.

"Zhang Xiuhong, are you out of your mind?!"

After a moment of lingering fear, I realized that she had discovered it in time, otherwise Zhang Xiuhong would have been doomed!

It's far and remote here, and hardly anyone comes here.

If Zhang Xiuhong had swallowed pesticide here, she would have been dead by the time people found her.

"Chen Sisi... why is it you? Who told you to meddle in other people's business?"

Zhang Xiuhong was looking for an outlet for her anger when she saw Chen Sisi, and suddenly she got excited, grabbing her and yelling hysterically.

Chen Sisi was being pressed hard on her shoulders, making her head spin.

Seeing her contemplating suicide, Chen Sisi's temples throbbed, and sparks almost flew from his eyes.

"Zhang Xiuhong, you're really biting the hand that feeds you! I kindly saved you, and you still curse me... Have you lost your conscience?"

Zhang Xiuhong cried uncontrollably: "Who told you to save me? Shouldn't you have wanted me to die?"

"Yes, I shouldn't have saved you! But you had to walk right in front of me. If I stood by and watched you die, I would never have a clear conscience for the rest of my life..."

Upon hearing her words, Zhang Xiuhong burst into tears, sobbing uncontrollably.

"You're... really strange... strangely annoying..."

Chen Sisi glared at her irritably: "Alright, tell me, why do you want to die?"

Zhang Xiuhong had a good cry, pouring out all her grievances, and felt much better now.

"Isn't it all because of you? I've lost all face, and Yang Qiuxia even framed and betrayed me..."

“After I got home, Zhou Tao brought up divorce with me, saying he would file a report today.”

“We already have a child, and this heartless man actually wants a divorce! If I go back after the divorce, I'll be drowned in the spittle of the whole village… So, I'd rather die than get a divorce…”

Upon hearing this, a surge of anger instantly rose in Chen Sisi's eyes: "It's better to live a miserable life than to die. It's just a divorce, is it really necessary to die?"

Zhang Xiuhong retorted angrily, "Do you think I'm like you?"

After saying that, she realized how hurtful her words were, and softened her tone: "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to say that to you, I just have a quick tongue."

Chen Sisi sneered, "Speechless? Isn't that what you're thinking too?"

"Yes... In your eyes, I'm just a slut who had a child out of wedlock and disgraced the reputation of the compound."

"No matter how you curse me or how you attack me, I will not commit suicide."

"Because my life was given to me at the cost of someone else's life, I have family and friends who love me, and most importantly... I am a mother, and my child cannot live without me..."

As Chen Sisi spoke, she became more and more agitated, and several times tears welled up in her eyes, but she managed to hold them back.

Zhang Xiuhong stared blankly at her, and for some reason, she felt as if the woman was glowing, so bright that she couldn't open her eyes.

As a mother herself, Zhang Xiuhong felt ashamed of herself.

After a long while, she stopped crying and sighed, "Chen Sisi, you are a good mother."
