Xu Hongying didn't even glance at the water glass on the table, and snorted coldly, "I'm suddenly not thirsty anymore."
Gu Chengfeng immediately lost his temper. Shen Sisi had never served him tea or water, yet now she was serving his mother, and to his dismay, she didn't appreciate it.
"Mom, Sisi and I are married now. She's my wife, not a maid to serve you..."
Xu Hongying, however, remained unmoved: "What's wrong with serving me? It's because I respect her! Which new bride doesn't serve her mother-in-law? Is it wrong for her to bring me an old woman a cup of water?"
Gu Chengfeng was so angry that his veins were throbbing. Teasing Shen Sisi made him even more furious than directly bullying him.
"Mom, Sisi has no obligation to take care of you..."
"You've gone too far! How dare you talk to me like that..."
After much thought, Shen Si finally understood who Gu Chengfeng's temperament resembled.
Both he and Xu Hongying are like firecrackers, easily ignited; the mother and son can't hold back three sentences before they start arguing.
They have very short tempers, and if she adds fuel to the fire, the two of them are sure to tear the roof off.
She looked at the large suitcase on the ground. Xu Hongying was prepared to stay and fight a protracted battle.
However, she was not intimidated. For Niu Niu's sake, she had endured all kinds of hardships and suffered all kinds of humiliation. Moreover, Gu Chengfeng was on her side.
After calming herself down, she handed the water glass on the table to Gu Chengfeng: "You've been working hard all morning, have some water first!"
Gu Chengfeng was in a fit of anger, but this sudden act of concern extinguished his anger.
He took the cup and obediently sat down at the other end of the sofa.
Chen Sisi picked up another glass of water and put it directly into Xu Hongying's hand: "Auntie, aren't you thirsty? You should drink some too."
Her expression remained unchanged, neither obsequious nor timid, and her tone carried an undeniable authority.
Xu Hongying still disliked her and slammed the cup on the table with a bang.
Shen Sisi merely glanced at it indifferently, without any emotion.
This frustrated Xu Hongying greatly. She made things difficult for Chen Sisi and gave her the cold shoulder, but why didn't Chen Sisi respond?
Shen Sisi is bound to make a scene. Didn't Yang Qiuxia say that Shen Sisi has a temper that flares up easily? She even dared to hit someone.
If anyone hits her old woman, she'll make sure Shen Sisi suffers the consequences.
But now, it's like punching a soft cotton ball; she has nowhere to vent her anger.
Chen Sisi looked up at the clock and said, "It's noon. I'll go make lunch."
She knew that Gu Chengfeng and Xu Hongying hadn't seen each other for a long time, so she told them to have a good chat and not to argue, and then she went into the kitchen.
Niu Niu followed us in like a little tail, clinging to Chen Sisi's leg: "Mommy, is that old lady really going to live with us? Niu Niu is scared, I don't want her to live here..."
Xu Hongying has a loud voice and a fiery temper, like a lioness who can bristle at any moment, which scared Niu Niu.
Chen Sisi squatted down and tenderly stroked the pale little face: "Niu Niu, she's not an ordinary grandma, she's Daddy's biological mother. If you're afraid of her, you don't have to play with her, but you still need to have basic manners, understand?"
Niu Niu nodded, seemingly understanding, "I understand."
She held up two index fingers and pointed hesitantly: "Since she's Dad's mother, then... let her stay."
At such a young age, she's already learned to love everything about the house...
Chen Sisi leaned down and kissed Niu Niu, then scooped a bowl of crushed corn kernels: "Go help feed the chickens in the yard, they need their lunch too..."
Niu Niu's eyes lit up, and she snatched the small bowl: "Yay, Niu Niu loves feeding the chickens the most..."
The little girl ran out happily, and Gu Chengfeng then pushed open the door and came in with a stern face.
Before Chen Sisi could speak, he took the initiative to wash the rice and cook it.
"Sisi, I'm sorry, I'll handle this. I'll let her go home tonight." Gu Chengfeng said sullenly as he rubbed the rice.
Chen Sisi placed the washed radish on the cutting board and shredded it, then gestured with her chin toward the large leather suitcase behind the door: "I'm afraid you can't handle this. She came prepared."
Gu Chengfeng followed the gaze to the box and immediately fell silent.
Chen Sisi said, "We'll deal with whatever comes our way. Besides, she's your mother. Are you going to never go home and never face her for the rest of your life?"
Gu Chengfeng lowered his head even further and remained silent for a long time before suddenly speaking: "I've never had a good relationship with them since I was a child."
“My dad is always busy, he's rarely home, my mom raises three kids on her own, she has a very bad temper, and then there's my older sister and younger sister, neither of them are easy to get along with…”
He spoke softer and softer as he went on, determined to protect Shen Sisi no matter what.
"So, don't worry about me. If she bullies you, you absolutely can't tolerate it. Tell me, and I'll stand up for you..."
Gu Chengfeng placed the pot heavily on the stove.
Chen Sisi paused for a second as she chopped vegetables. Was she about to vent her anger? Was she really going to turn against her son?
This old lady came here specifically to make things difficult for her. There are bound to be conflicts between them. She always has to rely on Gu Chengfeng to take the lead in everything, which annoys Gu Chengfeng to no end.
He had one thing in mind, but outwardly he calmly hummed in agreement: "Okay."
Lunchtime was tight, so I carefully stir-fried a big pot of shredded pork and radish, lined the bottom of the pot with two layers of cabbage, and put it on the stove to eat as a hot pot.
Seeing that there was only one dish, Xu Hongying raised the tip of her nose and began to nitpick.
"I've come all this way, and you only serve me cabbage and radishes?"
Gu Chengfeng slammed down his chopsticks, about to get angry, when Chen Sisi smiled sweetly and said, "Auntie, you are Chengfeng's mother, which means you are one of us. We don't treat you like an outsider."
“This is how we usually eat. If you think it’s too shabby, I’ll make you braised pork this afternoon.”
"What a great way to say you don't treat me like an outsider! You're really something..." Xu Hongying was so angry that she was panting heavily. Seeing everyone pick up their bowls and chopsticks, she reluctantly picked up her own chopsticks as well.
She wasn't afraid of Shen Sisi, but rather she was genuinely hungry after a long journey.
Seeing that his mother didn't make a fuss but instead started picking up food, Gu Chengfeng raised an eyebrow in surprise.
"Eat!"
As Chen Sisi was putting food into Niu Niu's bowl, she noticed that the little one was tucking her arms in and seemed to be doing something.
"Niu Niu, what's wrong? Is the food not to your liking?"
She quickly raised her short little arms, revealing two eggs, one large and one small, lying underneath.
"Mommy, I'm hatching chicks!"
"Hatching chicks?" Shen Sisi looked at the eggs with a mixture of surprise and delight. The chicken she bought had laid eggs, and two of them at that.
“Silly girl, you won’t be able to hatch chicks like that,” Shen Sisi told her. She explained that hatching chicks requires body heat that is very close to the skin, and it takes a long time.
Niu Niu thought it was too troublesome. After hesitating for a while, she decided to take the eggs out.
She gave one large egg to her mother, and another one she originally wanted to give to her father, but remembering her mother's words about being polite, she timidly reached out and handed the egg to Xu Hongying.
"Grandma, this is for you..."
