"Master! Something terrible has happened!"
The council chamber doors were flung open, and a servant rushed in, pale-faced and trembling:
"The square... the square is full of Shi family people! They... they are shouting that if our Bai family members don't come out within fifteen minutes, they will take over all Bai family businesses in the city and smash our shops!"
"This is outrageous!" Bai Biao slammed his fist on the table and stood up abruptly, his eyes blazing with anger.
The Bai family was able to establish itself in Wufeng City because of its shops and mining businesses that were spread throughout the city. This was the foundation of the family. The Shi family's words were tantamount to digging up the Bai family's roots!
"Let's go! Let's go take a look!" Bai Biao snorted and took the lead in walking outside. The elders and Bai Feng followed closely behind. Xiao Chen and Shi Tou exchanged a glance and also got up to follow.
The group hurried to the square in the center of Windless City and could hear deafening shouts from afar.
The square was filled with a dark mass of Shi family members, each holding a weapon and looking menacing.
Leading the group was a burly old man dressed in black armor, with a huge curved sword at his waist. The blade was covered with dark red lines, like congealed blood, and exuded a strong bloody smell—it was none other than Shi Zhan, the eldest elder of the Shi family.
When Shi Zhan saw the Bai family arrive, a sinister smile crept across his face. He raised his voice and said, "Bai Biao, you've finally decided to come out? What, how long do you plan to hide? If you know what's good for you, I'll have your ancestor come out to die, and hand over the deeds to the mines and shops. Then I might leave your Bai family with a whole corpse!"
The Shi family members around them burst into laughter, their voices full of contempt.
Bai Biao's gaze swept across the square, quickly noticing Tang Wen, the eldest elder of the Tang family, standing at the edge of the crowd. Tang Wen was dressed in purple, holding a whisk, with a faint smile on her face, but her eyes were scrutinizing. She was clearly there to watch the show and had no intention of making a move for the time being.
"Elder Tang, are you also going to get involved in this mess?" Bai Biao asked in a deep voice.
Tang Wen chuckled lightly and waved her whisk: "Patriarch Bai, you jest. I'm just here to watch the show. The Shi family's settling scores with your family has nothing to do with my Tang family."
Even so, she stood there steadily, clearly intending to reap the benefits without lifting a finger.
Bai Biao's heart sank; he knew that he could only rely on himself today.
Just then, Xiao Chen took a step forward, his gaze falling on Shi Zhan, and said calmly, "Leave that Shi family elder to me."
He could sense the aura emanating from Shi Zhan—a peak mid-stage Dao Proving cultivator, slightly weaker than the Star Crystal Python he had encountered in the mine. It was a good opportunity to test his own strength after advancing to the Dao Inquiry Realm.
Bai Biao was taken aback, then nodded: "Mr. Xiao, be careful! Shi Zhan's 'Blood Fiend Blade' is stained with the blood of hundreds of people, and its blade intent is ferocious and not easy to deal with!"
Upon hearing this, Shi Zhan laughed wildly, as if he had heard the biggest joke in the world. He pointed at Xiao Chen and said, "You? A mere brat dares to challenge me? Today I'll let you taste the power of my Blood Fiend Blade and show you what it means to wish you were dead!"
Before he finished speaking, he suddenly drew the huge curved sword from his back. The dark red lines on the blade instantly lit up, as if it had come to life. A strong smell of blood wafted over, and many cultivators with low cultivation levels in the square couldn't help but retreat, their faces turning pale.
"This knife... with each person killed, the blood lines deepen. Judging by the color, it must have killed more than a hundred people..." Bai Feng said in a low voice, a hint of fear flashing in his eyes.
Xiao Chen didn't care at all. He gripped the rusty iron spear tightly, and with a flash, he rushed out like an arrow, the tip of his spear pointing straight at Shi Zhan's heart!
"You're courting death!" Shi Zhan roared, and the Blood Fiend Blade swept out with a shrill whistling sound. Countless twisted ghostly shadows appeared around the blade, formed from the resentment of the souls that had perished beneath its blade, and were extremely ferocious!
"clang!"
The gun and the knife clashed, producing a deafening metallic clang.
Xiao Chen felt a brute force coming from the gun, which trembled slightly but steadily blocked the attack.
He understood—after advancing to the Dao Inquiry Realm, his spiritual power was indeed much stronger, and he no longer felt the strain of dealing with attacks from mid-stage Dao Proof Realm cultivators.
"Interesting!" A hint of surprise flashed in Shi Zhan's eyes, followed by an even wider grin. "Again!"
He brandished the Blood Fiend Blade, each strike ruthless and deadly. The dark red blade light surged toward Xiao Chen like a tidal wave, while the ghostly figure roared and pounced, as if to drag him into hell.
Xiao Chen remained calm and composed, his footwork shifting as if he were strolling leisurely. The rusty iron spear in his hand transformed into a streak of green light, sometimes like a serpent's tongue, cunning and unpredictable; sometimes like a dragon's tail, powerful and heavy. The spear's shadows multiplied, blocking all the sword lights and ghostly shadows.
The people in the square were stunned.
No one expected that this seemingly young white-robed cultivator could fight Shi Zhan to a standstill, and even gain a slight advantage! You must know that Shi Zhan is also known for his ferocity among the Dao Proving Realm cultivators in Wufeng City!
"This kid...when did he become so strong?" Tang Wen put away her spectator mentality and stared at Xiao Chen's marksmanship with a serious look. "This marksmanship...is very unique, combining offense and defense, and has great staying power."
The Bai family elders breathed a sigh of relief, their eyes shining with joy—it seemed they had made the right bet!
Shi Zhan grew increasingly alarmed as the fight progressed. He discovered that no matter how fast or fierce his blade was, it could always be precisely blocked by the opponent's spear. The opponent's spiritual power seemed less abundant than his own, yet it was terrifyingly condensed. Every collision made his arm go numb.
"We can't delay any longer!" A fierce glint flashed in Shi Zhan's eyes. He took two steps back and looked at the Blood Fiend Blade in his hand with a look of madness in his eyes.
"Boy, you've managed to force me to use this move, you should be proud of yourself!" Shi Zhan suddenly bit his tongue, spitting a mouthful of bright red blood onto the Blood Fiend Blade!
