Chapter 55

Chapter 55

The Meng family finished cleaning yesterday, which is a major accomplishment. They don't need to worry about the house for now; they can just do a little cleaning and decorating the day before the wedding.

However, there are still many trivial things to do every day, such as buying wedding candies to distribute to relatives and friends. In this rural area, wedding candies are usually in large red plastic bags with dozens of candies, peach crisps, red eggs, or red bean buns with a little red dye on them.

Wedding candies and peach crisps can be bought in town, but red eggs and red bean buns have to be made fresh.

So Meng's father took Meng Yuxiu early in the morning to buy these things. After returning, they put them in the kitchen. The day before the wedding banquet, Meng Yuxiu's maternal grandmother and aunts would come over to help spread eggs and make red bean buns.

After a busy morning, Meng's father finally had a moment to spare, so he helped Meng's mother hang the clothes out to dry in the yard.

But when she turned her head, she found that Meng Yuxiu was gone.

Where has he gone again?

Meng's mother smiled and said, "He just went out with a basket; he must be going to Grandpa He's house."

Meng's father frowned and asked, "Did you go pick peaches again?"

"That's right, they've almost stripped Grandpa He's peach tree bare." Mother Meng couldn't help but laugh.

After the couple finished hanging the clothes out to dry, they soon saw their son return carrying a basket full of peaches. He went straight into the house, then took a cloth bag and started looking for something in the kitchen.

The Meng couple were used to their son's actions, but since they were about to have their wedding banquet, they should have stayed home for the next few days. So, when Meng Yuxiu put the basket and the bulging cloth bag on the back of his bicycle and was about to leave,

Meng's father couldn't help but complain, "The wedding banquet is in just a few days, can't you stay at home? Why is the groom running around everywhere?"

Meng Yuxiu stopped in his tracks, blushing, and said he understood next time.

Seeing his father's expression, Meng's father shook his head.

He understood his son less and less. He used to think his son was aloof and indifferent to everything, but he never expected that once he had a wife, he would become so clingy, as if he would feel miserable if he didn't see her for a day.

Meng's mother took a bag out of the house and asked Meng Yuxiu to take it to Xiaoshi Village. Meng Yuxiu glanced at it and saw a white shirt, a pair of black suit-fabric trousers, and black leather shoes. There was also a red silk flower on the shirt, with a few thin transparent plastic strands attached to the edge of the silk flower, resembling baby's breath.

"This is for Xiao Han to wear on his wedding day. Please send it to him."

Meng Yuxiu carefully hung the cloth bag on the handlebars, then looked up and asked, "Mom, do I have one?"

Mencius' mother smiled and said, "Of course you have them. I've kept them all safe for you. I'll let you wear them on your wedding day."

Upon hearing this, Meng Yuxiu immediately smiled, pursing his lips.

He grabbed the handlebars and got on the bicycle.

Meng's father walked to the side, his face stern, and said, "We have to go home this evening. The banquet hasn't been held yet. Don't stay overnight in Xiaoshi Village and people will gossip, do you hear me?"

"Understood." Meng Yuxiu nodded hurriedly, then rode his bicycle out of the yard.

Watching his son ride away so fast, Meng's father suddenly felt a sense of loss, thinking that his son was too old to stay at home.

Meng Yuxiu had visited Xiaoshi Village many times, and the villagers all recognized him. When they saw him riding his bicycle over, they would occasionally crack a joke or two.

"Hey, isn't this the top scorer in the city? Here to find a wife again?"

Meng Yuxiu was shy, and whenever he heard these words, he usually didn't know what to say. He could only get off his bicycle, nod and smile at them subtly, and then pull his bicycle toward the Han family's house.

Today, Han Hong was chatting with someone at the village entrance when he heard someone call out to him, "Han Hong, your brother-in-law has come to visit!"

Han Hong turned his head and immediately walked happily toward Meng Yuxiu.

"elder brother."

"Xiao Xiu is here!" Han Hong, beaming, accompanied him home. "I was asking Xiao Shuo last night if you were coming today, and I didn't expect you to come. Luckily, I just bought some meat from town."

Meng Yuxiu looked at Han Hong shaking the meat he was carrying and said somewhat embarrassedly, "Brother, next time I come, I can just bring whatever I want, I can eat it too."

Han Hong found these words very pleasing to the ear, and he happily agreed, "Okay, okay, from now on when you come, I'll just cook whatever you like for you."

The weather wasn't too hot in the morning. When Meng Yuxiu and Han Hong arrived home, Han Shuo and Han Ting were playing on chairs under the porch by the door.

"Oh, you're here." Han Shuo saw Meng Yuxiu and got up to walk over. "What did you bring? So much?"

Meng Yuxiu parked his bicycle at the door, then took the things off the back seat and handed them to Han Shuo.

"Peaches, and cookies."

After he finished speaking, he handed the bag hanging on the handlebars to Han Shuo.

"What's this?" Han Shuo took the clothes out of the bag.

Han Hong leaned closer, unfolded his white shirt and hung it on his arm. "You wore this to your wedding, right? It's a really nice style."

Han Hong held up the clothes and compared them with Han Shuo's. He nodded to Meng Yuxiu with satisfaction and said, "Your mother is so thoughtful. The size is just right."

The three chatted at the door for a while before Han Hong went inside to cook lunch.

Meng Yuxiu was about to go inside to help when he noticed that the usually boisterous child was unusually quiet.

He looked down and saw Han Ting staring at him with her head tilted back and her cheeks puffed out.

Meng Yuxiu, not understanding what was going on, smiled and reached out to pinch his cheek before continuing to step over the threshold.

But as soon as he moved his leg, two small hands appeared on it.

Han Ting angrily braced herself on his thighs, straining with all her might while groaning in discomfort.

Han Shuo was both amused and exasperated. He grabbed Han Ting by the armpits and lifted him up. "Alright, alright, are you still angry? Are you really not going to let your little Meng brother into the house?"

Even while being lifted up, Han Ting's legs were still kicking wildly in mid-air.

"What's wrong?" Meng Yuxiu asked, completely bewildered.

Han Hong was tidying up by the stove when he turned to Meng Yuxiu with a smile and said, "I told him last night that Xiao Shuo would be staying at your house instead of at home, and he got upset, hahaha."

Han Ting felt even worse upon hearing this, and kicked her legs so hard that Han Shuo couldn't hold her back.

"Stop fooling around! You're like a flea, your uncle can't even catch you!"

Meng Yuxiu was quite embarrassed; he didn't know how to coax the child. But he still took the bouncing Han Ting from Han Shuo's arms and patiently coaxed, "Tingting, can I take you to the shop to buy some soda?"

When Han Ting heard about the soda, he didn't move much, but he still pouted and mumbled something.

Seeing this, Han Shuo also helped to coax her: "Tingting, did you hear that? Brother Xiao Meng will take you to buy soda."

Han Ting furrowed her small eyebrows, looking both longing and wary.

"What's there to be sad about?" Han Shuo ruffled his hair. "Xiqiao Village isn't far. You can go whenever you want. Didn't you say you liked Brother Meng's yard? How about you go there to play every day from now on?"

Han Ting then nodded.

After Meng Yuxiu took him to the shop to buy soda and they came back, the little guy kept calling Meng Yuxiu "Brother Meng" all the time.

On a hot summer noon, Han Hong cooked a simple and light lunch, consisting of a bowl of braised pork and fresh seasonal vegetables.

He invited Meng Yuxiu to sit down and eat, and then turned on the floor fan. In an instant, the fan shook its head and sent a cool breeze to everyone at the table.

However, Han Shuo didn't have much of an appetite at noon. He was quite embarrassed about the fact that he, as a man, experienced morning sickness. Whenever he felt nauseous, he would subconsciously hide it from Han Hong.

But now that it happens more often, and he has come to accept the reaction, he doesn't care about patting his chest and dry heaving in front of Han Hong when he sees the greasy braised pork on the table.

Seeing Han Shuo stand up and walk around the room to relieve the discomfort caused by morning sickness, Meng Yuxiu also put down his chopsticks, took a peach from the basket, and scooped a ladle of water from the water vat to wash it outside.

"Have some peaches."

Han Shuo felt a little better after taking a bite of the juicy and sweet peach.

"Want me to make you some rice porridge?" Han Hong asked.

Han Shuo waved his hand, "Never mind, I don't have an appetite right now, let's talk about it later."

After saying that, he told Meng Yuxiu to go eat first.

Meng Yuxiu stood there worriedly for a while before returning to his seat.

Han Shuo didn't eat lunch in the end; he ate a few peaches and then felt that was enough.

After lunch, Han Hong went out to run some errands, leaving only Meng Yuxiu and his uncle in the house.

Han Shuo and Han Ting were supposed to take a nap at noon, but it was stuffy upstairs, so Han Hong left a mat on the first floor. However, since Han Shuo was pregnant, his brother didn't let him lie on the mat, but instead got a bamboo recliner from somewhere.

Han Shuo lay on the recliner, watching Meng Yuxiu and Han Ting chat on the mat. However, he was feeling sleepy all the time, and he would fall asleep while listening.

After he took a nap, he woke up to find that Meng Yuxiu had moved a chair over and was sitting next to him, quietly watching him.

"?" Han Shuo glanced at Han Ting, who was still sleeping on the mat, and asked Meng Yuxiu, "Didn't you take a nap?"

Meng Yuxiu: "I'm not sleepy."

"Then why aren't you waking me up? Aren't you bored sitting here alone?"

“You seem to be sleeping soundly,” Meng Yuxiu said.

Han Shuo nodded, frowning as he got up from the recliner. Meng Yuxiu immediately realized what was happening and accompanied him to the door.

Since Han Shuo became pregnant, he has had a strong reaction every time he gets up. Sure enough, as soon as he stood at the door, Han Shuo put his hands on his knees and dry heaved.

The midday sun was scorching, and the cicadas were chirping incessantly. Han Shuo vomited until his eyes were watering before he finally recovered. Meng Yuxiu couldn't take away Han Shuo's suffering, so he could only pat his back gently. After Han Shuo finished vomiting, he quickly filled a basin with clean water for him to wash his face so that he could feel refreshed.

After Han Shuo finished washing his face and returned to the recliner, Meng Yuxiu asked, "Are you hungry? Shall I get you something to eat?"

"Wash another peach for me," Han Shuo said lazily, waving his hand dismissively.

Meng Yuxiu immediately washed a peach and handed it to him.

Han Shuo felt much more energetic after eating the peach.

He asked Meng Yuxiu, "Hey, you told me last time that morning sickness wouldn't be so severe after three or four months, right?"

Meng Yuxiu nodded and said, "It should be."

Han Shuo did the math. Today was July 29th, which meant it had been two and a half months. Let's just say four months. He only needed to hold on for another month and a half. This damned morning sickness was driving him to the brink of collapse.

He had originally planned to go to the county town to work with Meng Yuxiu during the summer vacation, but now, not only is he not in a position to work, he is too weak to even move.

The thought of how much money Han Hong had spent on his wedding made Han Shuo even more worried. He raised his chin at Meng Yuxiu and said, "When I feel better, let's see if we can start a business when we go to university."

Han Shuo and Meng Yuxiu's admission notices were delivered in early July. Meng Yuxiu went to Jinhua University, the university he most wanted to attend in this era, while Han Shuo also got into Hecheng University as he wished.

Both sets of parents breathed a sigh of relief when they learned that both of them were going to university in Hecheng.

However, Han Shuo was quite depressed. He had originally planned to just get into university to make Han Hong happy, but unexpectedly, he would have to go through university all over again.

On the day he received the admission notice, he asked Han Hong with a gloomy face, "Will I still have to go to school when I'm heavily pregnant?"

Han Hong laughed and said, "What's wrong with that? I heard from the villagers that some college students even bring their children to school."

"..." Han Shuo was at a loss. He couldn't even imagine the scene of him going to school with a big belly and walking like a duck.

Meng Yuxiu thought for a moment and said, "School starts in September. My dad's idea is that we go there half a month before the wedding, and then find a place to rent near the university. Let's settle down first before discussing doing business, otherwise I'm afraid your health won't be able to handle it."

Han Shuo nodded; that was the only option. Given his current physical condition, he vomited upon waking, before bed, before and after meals, and sometimes he would feel nauseous for no apparent reason.

The two continued chatting for a while about the teachers and classmates invited to the wedding banquet. Meng Yuxiu told Han Shuo that he had ordered preserved egg and tofu, and that the preserved egg and tofu would come to Xiaoshi Village to find Han Shuo in advance.

Han Shuo roughly understood what he meant, and he laughed and cursed, "Damn, did you call two groomsmen for me?"

Meng Yuxiu smiled, pursing his lips.

"And what about yourself? Who did you ask to be your best man?"

Meng Yuxiu said, "I invited Gao Ze and my deskmate Chen Dongdong."

"You've thought of everything." Han Shuo chuckled twice, then closed his eyes and continued to rest.

Meng Yuxiu lowered the fan speed by one level, letting the wind blow gently towards Han Shuo.

He sat quietly to the side, watching Han Shuo's face.

For a moment, he felt that Han Shuo was different from before.

Although his face was still the same—young and energetic, with a carefree air about him and a slightly lazy, roguish smile—Meng Yuxiu felt that something had somehow changed about Han Shuo.

He couldn't quite put his finger on it. Perhaps it was because Han Shuo was pregnant that he felt a little tired, and this tiredness seemed to Meng Yuxiu to be a vulnerable person who made him want to protect her.

The electric fan slowly oscillated its head, making a creaking sound in the quiet room.

Meng Yuxiu's gaze slowly moved down from Han Shuo's face, and when it reached Han Shuo's lower abdomen, which was covered by a vest, his eyes softened.

It was a sweltering summer day, and Han Shuo was only wearing a pair of loose, knee-length shorts. So when Meng Yuxiu's gaze continued to move downwards, he couldn't look away.

His eyes were fixed on Han Shuo's two straight and strong legs, especially when the fan blew and made the trouser legs billow, the shadow on the side of the legs made his breath catch slightly.

Because he hadn't touched Han Shuo for a long time. Although their marriage had been arranged for more than a month, he was either too busy to come over, or Han Hong was there when he did come over, so he and Han Shuo hardly had a chance to even hold hands.

Now that Han Hong was away, Meng Yuxiu stared at him for a moment, then couldn't help but secretly reach out and touch the warm skin on Han Shuo's neck with his fingertips.

Han Shuo immediately opened his eyes. He glanced over and, when he saw Meng Yuxiu's slightly flushed cheeks and his focused, burning gaze, he understood.

He couldn't help but grin and tease, "Why are you touching me like that? Getting horny in the middle of the day?"

"No." Meng Yuxiu withdrew his hand, feeling embarrassed by what he said.

"Not yet?" Han Shuo deliberately glanced at his pants, then raised an eyebrow and said, "Tsk tsk tsk, you call this not yet? Stand up and walk around for me."

Meng Yuxiu's state was too obvious for him to refute, so he could only pretend to casually place one hand on his trousers.

He glared at Han Shuo with a smile.

Seeing Meng Yuxiu's embarrassed yet secretly expectant look after being exposed, Han Shuo felt a surge of playfulness and slowly slipped his hand inside Meng Yuxiu's loose trousers.

Then I observed his expression with interest.

"How about it? Want me to use my five fingers to cheer you up, little brother?"

Sure enough, the muscles under his palm tensed up immediately, and Meng Yuxiu closed his eyes tightly and frowned.

After he opened his eyes and let out a suppressed breath, he glanced at the child sleeping on the mat behind him, and then at the open door.

He held Han Shuo's hand and said, "No need, it wouldn't be good if your brother saw this when he came back."

"Really not going to?"

Meng Yuxiu remained silent.

"Then forget it." Han Shuo saw that the kid was being hypocritical, so he pretended to withdraw his hand, but the process was very slow.

Meng Yuxiu was intrigued and grabbed Han Shuo's wrist. His ears turned red as he moved his chair closer to Han Shuo.

Han Shuo chuckled, "You still say no, no? Would telling the truth kill you?"

Meng Yuxiu's eyes were full of smiles as he awkwardly said, "Then I'll take it."

Han Shuo pulled him closer, then glanced at Han Ting, who was fast asleep on the mat. He winked slyly at Meng Yuxiu and whispered, "Hehe, I'll seduce you to death!"

However, due to the short time, Meng Yuxiu only got a small taste of success, because Han Hong returned just a few minutes later.

Upon hearing Han Hong's voice from outside the door, Han Shuo hurriedly withdrew his hand, while Meng Yuxiu frantically tried to find something to cover himself.

Han Shuo saw him suddenly get up from the chair, quickly search around the room without finding anything, and then quickly return to the chair.

"Don't try to cover yourself up. It'll only look weirder if you do. Just sit down."

Upon hearing Han Shuo's words, Meng Yuxiu could only stiffly and properly put his legs together, then place his hands on them.

Han Hong entered the room and saw Meng Yuxiu sitting with his back to him in a chair, turning his head away. He also noticed the slight beads of sweat on Meng Yuxiu's high, straight nose.

"Xiao Xiu," Han Hong said with a smile, moving the fan over to blow on him. "Isn't our room hotter than yours? Look at your face, it's so red. Do you want me to get you a towel to wipe it off?"

Meng Yuxiu quickly replied, "Thank you, brother, but no need, I'm not hot."

Han Shuo, who was listening nearby, watched Meng Yuxiu's ears turn redder and smiled slyly.

Meng Yuxiu didn't go home until almost four o'clock. After returning home this time, he wouldn't be able to come to Xiaoshi Village for the next few days because there were more and more things to do at home as the date approached.

Before leaving, seeing Meng Yuxiu's distressed state, Han Shuo patted him on the back and coaxed, "Just stay home obediently. We'll see each other again in a few days, won't we? Besides, we'll be living together every day after we get married. What's there to be reluctant about? Go back!"

"Wait for me to come pick you up."

"Alright, alright, go back now! Be careful while riding your bike."

"Okay." Meng Yuxiu then happily rode his bicycle back to Xiqiao Village.

After returning home, Meng Yuxiu toiled away at home for several days, finally making it to his wedding day.

The day before the wedding, all of Meng's mother's aunts and uncles came to help.

Everyone cleaned each room again, and then the women sat on the first floor chatting and cutting out double happiness characters and paper flowers.

Outside the courtyard, the men had placed several large stoves on the open ground in advance, and piled up a lot of firewood, waiting to start the fire as soon as the next day arrived.

Meanwhile, the neighbors and villagers brought over large basins and used hoses to wash the borrowed bowls and chopsticks clean.

With about twenty tables of guests, Meng Yuxiu and his father went to the village to borrow about twenty large round tables and more than two hundred stools. Then, together with others, they carried and moved them.

"Teacher Meng, where should I put your cigarettes?"

Where should we put these jars of wine?

Despite his busy schedule, Meng's father took time out to lead the relatives who had helped buy cigarettes and alcohol to find a place to put their things.

Meng Yuxiu then spent an afternoon in town hiring tractors; he hired three.

The fortune teller calculated the departure time: seven o'clock tomorrow morning. So Meng Yuxiu instructed the tractor driver to be in Xiqiao Village by six-thirty the next morning.

After hiring the tractor, he immediately ordered over a hundred firecrackers and dozens of boxes of fireworks from a fireworks shop in town.

By the time he finished all that and got home, it was already dark.

Meng Yuxiu's uncles lived nearby and mostly rode bicycles over, so they went home to rest around eight or nine o'clock in the evening and would come back around four or five o'clock the next morning.

Grandma and her two aunts will stay home tonight and just have a casual night out.

After dinner, they busied themselves decorating Meng Yuxiu's room.

The windows were wiped clean again and again, and even in the darkness of night, they still looked clean and bright.

Meng Yuxiu stood in front of the window and pasted the character for "happiness" on the two windows.

"It's straight now." After comparing the height, Meng's mother said to Meng Yuxiu, "Don't move it like this, it's just right."

After Meng Yuxiu finished pasting the window, his mother quickly applied more paste and handed him another pasted "double happiness" character, telling him to paste it on the door.

Meng's father brought a ladder and had Meng Yuxiu climb it to hang the ribbons of paper flowers from the ceiling.

Meng Yuxiu's aunts also made a string of the most fashionable wind chimes at the moment, which were hung right next to the window.

After finishing decorating the ceiling, Meng's mother, grandmother, and aunts began making the beds.

Although it was summer, there was only a brand-new bamboo mat on the bed, but several brightly colored quilts were piled up in layers at the head of the bed.

Meng Yuxiu's maternal grandmother instructed him, "Xiao Xiu, you'll sleep on the floor at your parents' place tonight. We'll save the new room for Xiao Han to sleep in tomorrow, understand?"

Meng Yuxiu would be happy to sleep on the floor tonight, let alone hang up hooks.

After finishing their work, the group prepared to wash up and rest.

After everyone left, Meng Yuxiu stood in his room and carefully inspected every corner of the room.

Everywhere you look, the originally simple and plain room has been decorated with a festive atmosphere, and the plastic confetti shimmers with a dazzling light under the lamp.

He closed the door and walked to the corner of the stairs, where he saw bright red "double happiness" characters everywhere he went.

He stood on the stairs and looked down. In the corner of the living room, the basket was full of bright red plastic bags already filled with wedding candies, bulging as if they were about to overflow.

On the cutting board next to it, dozens of red eggs and red bean buns were laid out.

At this moment, every item in the room seemed to be a sign that he and Han Shuo were getting married the next day.

Meng's mother made a makeshift bed for Meng Yuxiu next to the bed in the bedroom. Before he went to sleep, she said to him, "Little Xiu, go to sleep early. You have to get up early tomorrow. You'll be busy all day."

Meng Yuxiu said he knew.

Mencius' father asked him, "When are your two best men arriving?"

"I'll arrive around 6 a.m. tomorrow."

Mencius' father nodded and went to sleep.

Meng Yuxiu was indeed thinking that he needed to go to sleep quickly so that he would be energetic enough to pick up the bride tomorrow.

However, once the lights were off, he couldn't fall asleep.

The lights in the yard probably won't be turned off for the next few nights. He quietly got up and went to the window to check his watch several times throughout the night, from midnight to two or three in the morning, before finally managing to fall asleep for two hours.

Around 5 a.m., when Mencius' parents got up, he also got up.

Seeing his son quickly get up from the floor bed while still dressed, Meng's father asked, "Aren't you going to sleep a little longer?"

"I can't sleep."

Meng's father shook his head and said, "Look at you, so useless."

Mencius' mother smiled and said, "Now that you're up, hurry up and wash your face, brush your teeth, and change your clothes. Dress neatly, okay?"

"Okay." Meng Yuxiu put on his slippers and went downstairs.

The sky outside was still dimly lit, and there was a refreshing coolness in the air. Meng Yuxiu stood outside the courtyard, looking at the quiet village. He couldn't help but feel a little excited at the thought that in a few hours, this tranquility would be disturbed by the sound of firecrackers.

The village chef and a few villagers who had helped arrived at the door, still glistening with morning dew. Seeing Meng Yuxiu brushing his teeth outside, they joked, "Oh, groom, up so early!"

"Hehehe, that's for sure. I'm getting married today, how can I possibly sleep!"

With a toothbrush in his mouth, Meng Yuxiu couldn't help but smile repeatedly. He greeted the elders and brushed his teeth again and again.

After washing up, Mencius' mother told him to quickly change his clothes.

Meng Yuxiu returned to his room, unfolded his folded white shirt and trousers, and carefully put them on.

Just as he was about to leave the room, he thought for a moment, then tucked the hem of his shirt into his trousers before going downstairs.

More and more relatives and friends came to help, and soon the downstairs area was full of people.

Meng Yuxiu felt quite embarrassed when he came downstairs, especially when everyone's eyes were on him standing on the stairs.

Grandma clenched her hands and looked at her tall, handsome grandson, beaming with joy.

Meng Sen nodded in satisfaction as he tidied up his mother's hair, then beckoned his son to come down. "Where's that flower? Why isn't it tied up?"

In front of a group of people, Meng Yuxiu, his ears red, handed the silk flower in his hand to his mother.

Mencius' mother carefully fastened the silk flower brooch through her son's white shirt to his chest. She patted the shirt and laughed, "Not bad, you look like a groom now."

Gao Ze and his deskmate Chen Dongdong arrived at 6:30. They spotted Meng Yuxiu immediately. Meng Yuxiu was already tall, and his outfit today made him even more noticeable.

"Meng Yuxiu!!" Gao Ze and Chen Dongdong strode over. "You look so handsome today!"

Meng Yuxiu hurriedly stepped out from the crowd to greet him.

"I didn't expect you and Han Shuo to be so fast!"

Although they often joked about him and Han Shuo at school, they were still quite surprised to hear that the two were getting married. Most importantly, there hadn't been any prior indication of their relationship; they just suddenly announced their marriage.

Gao Ze and Chen Dongdong still found it somewhat unbelievable on their way out of the county town.

But when Gao Ze and Chen Dongdong saw Meng Yuxiu, especially when they saw the usually aloof academic star with an uncontrollable smile on his lips, they finally realized that their academic classmate was indeed married.

When Meng Yuxiu said, "Thank you for your hard work."

Gao Ze and Chen Dongdong even felt that this person was getting married and had come to life again.

Gao Ze said excitedly, "Not at all, it's our honor to be the best man for the city's top scholar!"

Chen Dongdong asked, "Hey Meng Yuxiu, when are you going to pick up Han Shuo?"

Meng Yuxiu had checked the time for the umpteenth time this morning. He glanced at his wrist again and said, "It's seven o'clock. There's still half an hour. Why don't you go inside and get something to eat?"

"Okay, okay!"

Several large boilers in the open space started working, and relatives and friends who were helping out smoked and chatted, occasionally stuffing a piece of firewood into the furnace.

In an instant, the crackling of firewood, along with the steam from the steamer, created a lively atmosphere of cooking.

Three tractors were already parked at the village entrance. Everyone helped to put bright red "double happiness" characters on the tractors and then loaded firecrackers, fireworks, and wedding candies onto them.

At 6:50, the fortune teller urged everyone to hurry up and get on the tractor.

The group of people who were going to pick up the bride immediately started making a commotion, and the pace quickened. Meng Yuxiu's mood also tensed up for a moment.

"Hurry! The groom should ride the first tractor!"

Meng Yuxiu led Gao Ze and Chen Dongdong to the first tractor, amidst the gazes of the surrounding villagers. Just as they were about to climb onto the tractor, Meng's mother hurriedly stood under the tractor and stuffed something into her son's hand.

"Oh dear! I was so busy I almost forgot to give you this!"

Meng Yuxiu looked down and saw a large bunch of bright red silk flowers, with several clusters of transparent plastic tassels around it.

Just as Meng's mother finished handing over the things, Meng's father jumped off the tractor behind and also handed over a bag of things.

"When we get to Xiaoshi Village, scatter these candies among the villagers. There are also red envelopes inside; remember to give one to Tingting!"

"Okay, I understand." Meng Yuxiu held the bouquet in one hand and the cloth bag in the other. In such a warm and excited atmosphere, even his fingers trembled slightly.

The fortune teller, sitting on the second tractor, kept a close eye on his watch, timing everything precisely at seven o'clock. Then he shouted at the top of his lungs, "It's time! Time to go pick up the bride!!!"

Upon receiving the signal, the men waiting at the intersection took the cigarettes out of their mouths and lit strings of bright red firecrackers.

The tractor drove out of Xiqiao Village amidst loud firecrackers and a flurry of red paper.
