Chapter 25 Grandma Fainted
The express delivery contained some artworks and nutritional supplements that Xu Jing bought for her grandmother abroad, as well as a bag for Chen Zan. She had browsed the web on her home computer before, but couldn't bear to buy them in China because they were too expensive, so Xu Jing bought them for her at a duty-free shop.
So Ms. Xu, you are just tough on the outside but soft on the inside.
She called her grandmother again, and she sounded less energetic than before. Chen Zhan asked her if she had a headache recently. Chen Jiaohua initially argued that she hadn't, saying that Ms. Xu had told her everything.
Chen Jiaohua finally agreed and said that she had a noticeable headache when she woke up in the morning, but it would basically go away after a few hours and it was not a serious problem.
But Chen Zan was worried. She had originally planned to continue living in school this week, so she decided to go back quietly.
So without telling anyone, before dawn, I put on a mask and a hat, changed into a long down jacket that didn't match my usual style, and got on the bus with my suitcase.
Her cleverness had a small effect; at least on the way back to the countryside, she didn't notice anyone following her. She gave all the things Ms. Xu had mailed back to her grandmother, while she criticized Xu Jing for spending money recklessly abroad, saying that all the skincare and nutritional supplements were scams for old ladies. She was sure that Ms. Xu would be tricked into buying health supplements when she got old.
After hearing this, Chen Zan couldn't help laughing.
It seems that my grandmother's country courtyard has the effect of purifying the soul. All the troubles encountered at school seem to be swept away when I come to this paradise.
Even though Chen Jiaohua complained, she would still keep them all in mind.
When Chen Zhan came back this time, he was going to take her to the city for a check-up before he would feel at ease. Chen Jiaohua waved her hand and said she didn't want to go. Chen Zhan kept trying to persuade her. She said with a stern face that Chen Zhan was so nagging at such a young age, and he would be even worse when he got older. She urged her to make tea, otherwise she would give all the boxes of comics that Chen Zhan hid under the bed to the fat grandson of Aunt Qing next door.
Those were all Chen Zan's private collections over the years, and he certainly couldn't bear to part with them. He changed into cotton and linen clothes and made tea while sending a message to Ms. Xu.
It was not until the afternoon that the other side was free to go back and asked Chen Zan to observe for two days. If there was nothing serious with grandma, she would be left alone. At most, Xu Jing would tell the neighbors and ask them to help take care of grandma.
So Chen Zan stayed at his grandmother's house for one night and returned to school the next night.
I stayed up late again at night to read comics, and got up a little late the next day, almost ten o'clock.
The room was quiet. Chen Zhan went downstairs and called out, "Grandma."
No one answered, and there was no one in the yard.
She was a little surprised. Could it be that Ms. Chen Jiaohua had gone out so early?
Grandma knew that whenever Chen Zhan stayed here, she would stay up late to read her picture books, so she never woke her up for breakfast in the morning, but would serve her a separate portion of breakfast and put it in the pot.
She went to the kitchen and looked, but there was nothing there, and there was no sign of a fire on the stove. A bad feeling came over her, and she hurried upstairs to get her phone and call the old lady.
Ms. Chen is old and not used to using smartphones. She didn't hear the phone call, so her ringtone is the kind of loud-speaker folk love song that the elderly often use. As long as the phone rings, you can hear it from several rooms away.
Sure enough, as soon as I dialed the number, a deafening earthy ringtone rang out from the master bedroom on the first floor.
Chen Zhan's eyelids jumped, and she quickly pushed the door open. There was no one in the bedroom. She pushed open the master bedroom bathroom and saw the old man lying unconscious on the ground with a large amount of blood on his head. Her heart seemed to stop beating.
I hurriedly called an ambulance. The nearest hospital was more than ten minutes' drive away, so I quickly called the neighbors to help carry my grandmother outside.
The ambulance came and lifted the unconscious old man into the ambulance. Chen Zan sat in next to her. She was pale and her hands and feet were cold. She held her grandmother's hand tightly with both hands, not daring to think about what she should do if something happened to her grandmother.
She rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment, but only after medical staff came out and asked the family to sign a medical responsibility statement did she quickly call Xu Jing.
After forty minutes of rescue, grandma was pushed into the general ward. Later, a doctor told Chen Zan that grandma was in a coma because the brain tumor pressed on the nerves, causing high blood pressure and sudden fainting. Fortunately, she was sent to the hospital in time.
As for the wound on his head when he fell unconscious, it was not a big problem.
Although the tumor is not large and it would be best to have surgery as soon as possible, my grandmother is already in her sixties and craniotomy carries risks, so the family was asked to discuss the matter carefully.
Since the ambulance is the nearest ordinary hospital to the countryside and has limited medical resources, the doctors here suggested that it would be best to wait until the patient's condition stabilizes and then transfer him to a more authoritative brain tumor hospital for expert consultation and to find a doctor with rich experience in brain tumor surgery to perform the operation.
The incident happened so suddenly that Chen Zan was nervous at first, but after slowly calming down, he called the school to ask for leave, contacted the hospital, and did a series of other things.
When she returned to the ward, Chen Jiaohua had already woken up. She probably knew that Chen Jiaohua had delayed coming for a check-up for the past few days and suddenly fainted today. She thought that a minor illness had been delayed and turned into a serious one, causing trouble for her granddaughter.
So when he saw Chen Zan come in, there was still a hint of guilt on his face as if he had made a mistake.
Chen Zhan couldn't help laughing, "It's okay, grandma."
I'm even glad that she came back this week. If she hadn't come back, I don't know what would have happened.
Seeing that Chen Zhan didn't blame her, Chen Jiaohua felt relieved, so she asked tentatively, "Is this not a serious illness?"
She is usually in good health and has had annual physical examinations in previous years.
Chen Zhan pursed his lips and said, "Grandma doesn't want to hide it from you. The doctor said you need to be transferred to another hospital for surgery."
She told her grandmother about her illness because she knew that her grandmother was not the kind of person who would hide her illness and avoid seeing a doctor.
After hearing this, Chen Jiaohua only took half a minute to accept the fact that she had a brain tumor. "At my age, life and death are no longer important. Even your mother hasn't come back. Otherwise, I will hire a nurse for myself and you can go back to school."
Chen Zhan was sometimes really impressed by how clear-headed Ms. Chen Jiaohua was. He said with a straight face, "It's too late. I've already asked for leave."
It was not until the evening that Xu Jing saw the message and called back. She was also very anxious on the other end of the phone and had already booked the next flight back home.
But Xu Jing is the chief conductor of this orchestra's tour, and the last stop is the day after tomorrow. If she leaves now, not only will the orchestra be left without a performance, but she may also lose her position as chief conductor.
Chen Zhan calmly analyzed, "Mom, Grandma's brain tumor is in the early stages. If it's discovered early, it can be cured by removal. Besides, it will take some time to transfer to another hospital. The surgery date hasn't been determined yet. You can finish your work first and come back. Grandma won't blame you."
I went over the doctor's advice again.
This reason seemed to convince Xu Jing, and she calmed down. "Zhanzhan, you've been working hard these past two days. I have an acquaintance at the City Center Hospital. I'll tell him about it and let him handle the transfer, okay?"
Chen Zhan replied, "Okay, Mom, don't worry too much. I'll take care of grandma. Just perform well."
After hanging up the phone, Xu Jing sent a phone number to the director of the Department of Neurosurgery at the City Central Hospital.
