Chapter 97 Significance

Chapter 97 Significance

"You still have family. Uncle Shi and Aunt Shi only have you as their son. You still have the Shi family." Shen Sichen leaned lazily against the back of his chair. "No one blames you for this. It is others who should regret and be punished."

Wu Wenjun was sent to prison two years ago. Someone there gave him "special care" and said he would be taken care of in any way they wanted, with only one requirement: he could not die.

"So you don't have to spend the rest of your life on this. You still have a long life ahead of you. You can live your own life."

But he came here not for the Shi family, nor did he care about money, power, fame, or even himself. He came here just for Shen Chutang, just to have a happy life with her.

Shi Chengyu shook his head, "I understand, second brother."

He didn't explain, but responded quietly. Shen Sichen didn't know whether he had listened or not. He watched him stand up and walk to the front of the flowerbed, picking the best-blooming rose. He couldn't help laughing, and secretly cursed him for being childish in his heart.

The period of time after that was probably the best time for Shi Chengyu. He agreed to what Shen Sichen said, but he just agreed and continued to stay with Shen Chutang.

Day after day, I lead a very regular life.

Get up on time every morning, kiss her gently, say good morning to her, then go downstairs to pick a flower, or go to the flower shop to buy one. The vase on the bedside table will always be filled with fresh flowers.

Then he ate breakfast and sat on the bed to talk to Shen Chutang. When he didn't know what to talk about, he just told stories.

In the afternoon, he gave Shen Chutang a massage. He didn't dare to do it before, as Shen Chutang looked like a fragile porcelain doll. He didn't even dare to hold her hand, but just held her hand gently in his palm.

Until now, he has mastered everything and does it all by himself without any help from anyone.

He even learned a little about using medical equipment from the doctors. He would look at the data on them and record them carefully, even though those data had not changed much over the years.

At night, Shi Chengyu would tell her a bedtime story on time. After finishing, he would kiss her again and whisper those three words:

"I love you."

Over and over again, expressing his love.

It was like this every day. He never felt dull or even boring. He even felt that as long as he persisted, Shen Chutang would wake up sooner or later.

But things did not go as planned. That ordinary life only lasted for half a year. The doctor called Shen Chutang's family and asked them what they were going to do next.

Shen Sichen retorted without hesitation, "What can we do? Hundreds of millions of dollars of investment can't even accommodate one patient!"

The doctor hesitated for a moment and said, "Of course Mr. Shen can be admitted, but it is meaningless." After he said that, he subconsciously glanced at Shi Chengyu, the man who stayed in the ward every day.

Shen Sichen became angry instantly, but before he could rush over, he was stopped by Shen Sujing.

"What do you mean by meaningless?" he asked through gritted teeth, glaring at people.

"Mr. Shen, the probability of a vegetative patient waking up is only 10% to 15%. Miss Shen has been in this state for two and a half years and has no signs of waking up."

"And we can't tell whether she is conscious now. If she is not conscious, the probability of waking up will be even lower. But if she is conscious but can't wake up, it will be very painful for the patient."

Shi Chengyu's attention was all focused on those few words. He never felt that he could not hold on. As long as there was hope, even if it was only one percent of hope, he would hold on. But what if his persistence made Shen Chutang suffer?

Not only Shi Chengyu, but everyone present fell silent. Chen Musheng covered his face and turned away, with crying sounds echoing outside the door.

"So, Mr. Shen, please consider this: three years is the longest possible period for a vegetative patient to wake up. After that, there is little hope."

He said it politely, but everyone knew that the probability of "slim" was equivalent to zero.

Shi Chengyu walked out silently, returned to the ward and held Shen Chutang's hand. He did this whenever he felt uneasy or afraid, as if that cold hand was the source of power that supported him to maintain normalcy.

He never thought carefully that Shen Chutang would be in pain lying on the hospital bed.

She is so afraid of the dark that she always leaves a light on when she sleeps.

If she was conscious, could hear them talking, knew they were beside her, could feel everything happening around her, but was trapped in darkness and could not wake up, she was obviously most afraid of the dark, how uncomfortable and painful it would be...

For the first time, Shi Chengyu began to question his decision and his persistence. No matter how slim the hope was, he was not afraid. He could persist and wait. But if the price of persistence was Shen Chutang's pain, how could he persist?

She was most afraid of the darkness, and he was most afraid of her pain.

But he is not Shen Chutang's family member and has no right to make decisions.

Mr. and Mrs. Shen did not say to give up immediately, as they could not do so, but they also did not say how long they would hold on. All the waiting had changed, and was filled with more entanglements and bitterness.

Shi Chengyu began to become moody again, sometimes optimistic and sometimes pessimistic.

He wanted to talk to Shen Chutang more, but he was afraid that she would hear him but not wake up, and would struggle alone in the dark.

He continued to express his love, afraid that she could hear him, yet also afraid that she couldn't hear him.

And he started to become very extreme. Sometimes he refused to eat for several days. When Shen Chutang was lying in bed receiving an IV drip, he sat beside her and gave her a nutritional injection.

As the three-year deadline drew closer, he became visibly anxious, even refusing to take nutritional injections. His physical condition was even worse than Shen Chutang's.

"You are trying to force me to death..." Chen Musheng felt extremely bitter and felt that it was Shen Sichen who was not letting him have an easy life.

But everyone knew that no one forced him, and Shen Sichen had already begun to persuade him. It was he who couldn't get over the hurdle in his heart.

The Shen family kept the truth from Shen Boyu for three years before they were willing to tell him about Shen Chutang's accident. During these years, they had been relying on excuses such as Shen Chutang was busy with school and traveling during the holidays to deceive him, and they used photoshopped photos to cover up the truth.

It was not until three years later that Shen Boyu learned that Shen Chutang had been lying in bed for three years and there was little hope of him waking up. They called him to see him for the last time.

Shen Boyu pointed at Shen Gengli's nose and cursed angrily, crying with red eyes because of his age, "You all bully me because I'm an old man, don't you? You think I'm useless, don't you?"

"Three years! I'm still waiting for Tangtang to come back to the villa to see me, and now you tell me that the disease is incurable?! Is the Shen family short of this little money or something else?"

"Unfilial son! Unfilial son!"

Shi Chengyu slowly raised his head in the ward, listening to the noise outside, his sluggish brain thinking about the meaning of those words and the purpose of the Shen family calling Shen Boyu. There was no color on his pale face, and he looked so haggard that he seemed like he would collapse in the next second.
