Chapter 167 Linked Together (7) - Roasted Bird
Si Zhong continued with his work until he finished before standing up.
He walked to the impassable passageway outside the wooden house, squatted down, took the short knife in his hand, cut the ropes binding the planks, and pulled the planks out.
After doing this several times, I got a pile of wooden boards. I even picked out one board and used a knife to carve out a few skewers of moderate thickness from the edge of the board.
Ning Shu was dumbfounded by this move, but she had to admit that it was incredibly skillful.
Si Zhong carried all the wooden boards to the spot where he had been sitting, threw them on the ground, and then used skewers to skewer the birds from their rear ends to their heads—eight birds, two skewers.
After stringing them together, he stood upright and inserted the skewers into the gaps in the wooden board.
Use a short knife to shave the other planks into smaller pieces, then pile them together, and go into the cabin to get a handful of straw to stuff under the planks.
While stuffing the straw into the fire, he instructed Ning Shu to bring him a torch, which Ning Shu did.
After receiving the torch, Si Zhong lit the straw, then had Ning Shu put the torch back, and then they waited.
After the firewood was lit, he used the remaining wood to make a makeshift barbecue grill and then placed the skewered birds on it.
This way, he only needs to hold the skewer with one hand and rotate it to roast the bird evenly.
Ning Shu felt a great sense of accomplishment as she looked at what he had done, as if she had done it herself, even though she had only plucked a single hair.
As time passed, she soon smelled the aroma of roasted bird, her saliva began to flow, and her stomach growled even louder.
As if knowing she was hungry, Si Zhong casually picked up a skewer and put it in his mouth, seemingly to taste it.
Seeing that he didn't say anything and just kept gnawing on the bird, Ning Shu realized that the bird must be cooked, and silently reached for another skewer.
Just as she was about to touch the divination stick, Si Zhong grabbed her wrist and asked, "What are you doing?"
Ning Shu was speechless: "Eat something! Aren't you enjoying your food? Why do you have to ask?"
Si Zhong: "There's no food for you here. Go get something yourself if you want to eat."
What?! He didn't intend to share with her? How could he do this!
Ning Shu asked indignantly, "Why?"
Si Zhong didn't care at all: "Because these are all my dinners."
Ning Shu: "Can you finish this all by yourself?"
Si Zhong: "We can finish it."
She dared not say, "Let me see you finish eating," since the other party might actually have the ability to do so. She was preparing to change her approach and decide to try persuasion.
"We're teammates. It won't do you any good if I starve to death, so please share some food with me."
Si Zhong remained unmoved: "A person can survive for three days without food, which is enough time for us to pass the test."
Is he even speaking human language?
Ning Shu found it unbelievable, then suddenly realized something: "The system says we can't hurt our teammates, aren't you hurting me by doing this?"
Si Zhong raised an eyebrow: "It says you can't hurt people. I was just abusing them, I didn't break any rules."
But it's unethical!
Ning Shu felt like she was about to collapse: "If you hate me so much, why did you still team up with me?" And why did you force her to?
Si Zhong: "The two are not in conflict, nor is there a causal relationship between them." At least, that's not the case for him.
Ning Shu had nothing to say, and silently shrank to one side, refusing to listen, watch, or feel hungry.
I don't know how much time passed, but I guess the other person had eaten all the birds, when suddenly I heard him ask, "Want some?"
Of course she wanted to! But he was so bad, so she stopped thinking about him.
Seeing that Ning Shu ignored him, Si Zhong said, "I was going to share some with you, but since you don't want to eat, then forget it."
Upon hearing this, Ning Shu shamelessly turned to look at him and asked hopefully, "Are you really going to share some with me?"
Si Zhong nodded, and Ning Shu immediately scurried over, looking at him with bright, sparkling eyes.
Si Zhong smiled, seemingly satisfied with her performance. He picked up another skewer, broke off the leg of one of the birds, and handed it to Ning Shu.
"Huh, you're only giving her one leg?" Ning Shu asked incredulously.
Si Zhong watched Ning Shu stare at the bird leg in his hand with her big, round eyes, and chuckled to himself. Teasing her was really fun.
He asked, "Don't you want it?"
Ning Shu realized what he meant and immediately nodded. Even a fly's leg is meat! She quickly took the bird's leg from his hand.
The bird leg didn't have much meat, and it wasn't much thicker than a toothpick. But at least there was something to eat, so Ning Shu didn't mind and ate it all in a few bites, without even tasting what the bird leg tasted like.
Now she felt even hungrier.
Ning Shu looked at Si Zhong again and found that he was gnawing on the bird on the second skewer. If she didn't speak up soon, he would probably eat it all.
But she didn't know what to say, so she could only lick her lips and stare at the skewer in the other person's hand.
Seeing her greedy look, Si Zhong felt that she was both cute and pitiful, and he couldn't bear to do it. So he broke off another bird leg and handed it to her.
Ning Shu happily accepted it, thanking him profusely, almost drooling. This scene amused Si Zhong.
Ning Shu quickly finished showing off the second bird leg, and then continued to stare at the skewer in Si Zhong's hand. She found that as long as she kept staring at Si Zhong, he seemed to give her food.
By the time Si Zhong had eaten the sixth bird, he was already seven or eight tenths full, and he was getting a little tired of eating birds, so he didn't want to eat anymore.
Seeing Ning Shu's greedy look, he felt he had amused himself enough and said, "It's too greasy." Then he tossed the skewer in his hand to Ning Shu.
When Ning Shu received the slip of paper, she was moved to tears: there were still two birds! Afraid that Si Zhong would change his mind, she quickly showed off her prize.
She quickly finished the birds. She didn't have a big appetite; she ate two birds and their legs, and was about 70-80% full.
There was one thing Si Zhong said that she agreed with: it was too cloying, but she didn't mind.
After finishing their meal, it was already past midnight, and the two of them went into the cabin to rest.
Ning Shu lay directly on the straw, while Si Zhong sat in the corner and fell asleep, holding the short knife in his hand—a typical defensive posture.
Ning Shu ignored him, telling herself not to get close to him, and went to sleep as soon as she lay down.
After seeing Ning Shu fall asleep by the firelight, Si Zhong closed his eyes and fell asleep as well.
After daybreak, Ning Shu was awakened by the sunlight. When she woke up, Si Zhong was still asleep.
She looked at Si Zhong's profile and noticed that he had an ear cartilage stud on his left ear, positioned about one-third of the way up his earlobe.
The stud looked like it was made of silver and had a certain width. The surface of the earring was engraved with some intricate patterns that I couldn't understand.
She remembered that Si Zhong didn't wear this ear cartilage stud before, but that was before his resurrection.
As for whether he brought it to the previous instance, she didn't know. After all, his main form at the time was a doll and a puppet, and the environment was very dark after he turned back into human form, so she didn't notice.
