An Yi couldn't quite describe his feelings throughout the journey. He probably already guessed what was going on in his mind: the medicine bottle and monitoring bracelet he always carried, his body that would frequently become breathless and faint, and his frail body that looked even thinner than an eighteen-year-old...
He always harbored some kind of expectation in his heart. He hoped that Jin He might have had some real hardship and had no choice but to leave him. But he also hoped that Jin He had always been the spirited Jin He who had never suffered any hardship and that he only broke up with Jin He because he wanted to meet someone better.
"Your electrocardiogram and echocardiogram..." the doctor examined for a long time, wearing glasses. "Do you have a history of heart disease?"
An Yi sat quietly to the side, waiting for Jin He's reply.
Jin He simply looked down at her pants, her lips pressed together until they turned white, and she didn't intend to answer.
"Your heart problem is quite serious. How can your heart disease be so severe at such a young age? It's heart failure! Heart failure is the final stage of all cardiovascular diseases. You're only twenty-five!"
"Heart failure?!" An Yi jumped up almost instantly, his whole body stiffening, veins bulging on his forehead and neck, and his eyes bloodshot, looking terrifying. "Are you sure you're not mistaken? Heart failure? He's only twenty-five! How could he have heart failure! How could he!"
“You didn’t pick up the wrong one. This ultrasound report is Jin He’s, right? Look, his name is written here. His ejection fraction is so low, and his heart function is terrible.” The doctor looked them over. “You two are idols, aren’t you? My daughter is also a fan. I heard that her exercise and sleep schedule are irregular. You should think about changing careers.”
"Is there...is there any possibility that someone has the same name?" An Yi almost leaned close to the doctor, his eyes filled with pleading. "Is it possible, doctor? Jin He...Jin He is only twenty-five this year..."
Suddenly, a hand pulled him back, and An Yi was instantly speechless. With red eyes, he turned his head and silently questioned Jin He.
"Don't make things difficult for the doctor," Jin He said, head down. "She was talking about me."
"So, Mr. Jin He, do you have any history of heart disease? Or congenital heart disease?"
Jin He shook his head. This time, he chose to tell the truth: "I had an acute myocardial infarction three years ago, and this is how I ended up after being rescued."
"Young people shouldn't push themselves too hard." The doctor quickly wrote out a prescription on a piece of paper and handed it to Jin He. "Your illness requires rest and recuperation. You can't stay up late and overwork yourself anymore. Acute myocardial infarction... So young, oh dear."
After listening to the doctor's advice, Jin He prepared to go downstairs to get the medicine. Seeing that An Yi was still sitting there without moving, she reached out and pulled him but couldn't budge him.
Well, he still needs some time to process this. After all, anyone would be happy for a while if they suddenly found out their ex-boyfriend was going to die.
At least from now on, he won't have to hide anything from An Yi anymore. Oh well, let's give An Yi the right to know. As an adult, he should be able to choose the option that best suits him.
"Doctor, heart failure... can it be cured?" After Jin He left, An Yi sat down in his seat and asked.
"The chances of a full recovery are slim. This disease mainly depends on recuperation. He is still young, and with proper care, he is still able to live like a normal person."
"Why?" An Yi didn't understand. "Why would a perfectly healthy person suddenly have an acute myocardial infarction? He's so young..."
"Heart attacks are no longer just a disease of the elderly," the doctor explained. "Excessive fatigue, excessive stress, irregular sleep patterns, and excessive alcohol consumption can all lead to heart attacks. Do you know how many people die from heart attacks every year? Sometimes we call this kind of sudden death..."
Sudden cardiac death...
Jin He sat in the corridor of the medical examination center with a large bag of medicine. Because of the abnormal electrocardiogram, the staff arranged for him to have a cardiac ultrasound. The other trainees did not need to have this test, so they had already gone back. Even the staff and machines had been removed. Now only he and An Yi were here.
He shook the black plastic bag in his hand, making a rustling sound, as if he knew what this grand medical check-up was for.
Not long after, the door to the clinic opened, and An Yi came out, squatted down in front of Jin He, buried his face in Jin He's legs, and Jin He almost immediately felt something hot seeping through the thin fabric of her sweatpants.
An Yi squatted there, his arms half-embracing Jin He's waist, crying in a suppressed and helpless manner.
Jin He sighed. She knew this would happen, so she never planned to tell An Yi that he might have made a mistake by agreeing to come for the physical examination today. She should have just refused to come no matter what.
"Why didn't you tell me you almost died suddenly?" An Yi looked up, his eyes red from crying, and reached out to touch Jin He's chest. "Did you ever stop jumping here?"
Jin He smiled bitterly and nodded: "Mm."
After I told you we were breaking up.
An Yi opened his mouth, then closed it again, as if he wanted to say something but held back. He said sadly, "Is this why you chose to leave me?"
“Not entirely,” Jin He replied.
An Yi said, "I'd rather you broke up with me because you didn't like me anymore."
Jin He felt sorry for him and tried to comfort him: "Look, I'm fine now, aren't I? I was lucky that I fainted in the hospital and was rescued in time. Otherwise, I might have become an idiot because of cerebral ischemia."
"You're practically an idiot." An Yi hugged him pitifully, like a wronged teddy bear. "You didn't tell me about something so important, you kept it from me, why?"
“I originally wanted to keep it from you,” Jin He replied. “But today I saw my fan site admin, the one who has been with me since I debuted at eighteen. I never expected her to come here. Back then, I left the group and disbanded so hastily, without giving them a reason. They have been waiting in the same place ever since.”
“I think you feel the same way. If I don’t give you a reason for breaking up back then, you won’t move on, and now you see.” Jin He spread her hands. “So, this is the reason I’m breaking up with you, An Yi. You said before that it wasn’t a breakup unless you agreed, so I’m telling you again now, let’s break up. I hope you can respect that…”
"No." An Yi hugged her tighter. "I don't agree. I won't break up."
Seeing that Jin He showed no sign of backing down, he added in a low voice, "I'd rather die than break up with her."
"Stop messing around, okay?"
“I’m not making a fuss. You’re so young, and it’s not like you can’t be cured. Why are you in such a hurry to push me away?” An Yi said. “Besides, I won’t be happy at all without you.”
“I haven’t had a good time abroad for the past three years.” An Yi said, her voice filled with grievance. “I feel sad whenever I think about how you don’t want me anymore. Even if I’m just here with you during your treatment, as long as I know you’re still by my side, I’m happy. Even if the outcome is not what I expected, at least I won’t have any regrets. I really have been with you for a long time, but you pushed me away. You thought you were being good to me, but you pushed me away.”
"I will never forgive you. If you dare to leave me alone now, I...I...I will commit suicide for love."
