Chapter 139 The Needle at the Bottom of the Sea

Chapter 139 The Needle at the Bottom of the Sea

As soon as he stepped out of the ward, Gu Yu took out a cigarette case from his pocket, put one in his mouth, and was about to light it when he remembered that he was in a hospital, so he reluctantly put the cigarette back in.

He kicked the corner of the wall in frustration. "Life is like a play. Damn it, this one night is more mentally exhausting than a month of working on a case."

Zhuang Bieyan didn't reply, but just looked at Qu He beside him.

A complex emotion flickered in his eyes, but in the end he didn't ask anything, he just held her tightly in his arms.

After leaving the hospital, Qu He still needed to return to the police station to make a supplementary statement regarding what had happened in the ward.

Gu Yu personally drove the two of them back to the police station.

As soon as the three entered the hall, they heard the crisp sound of high heels coming from inside.

Looking up, I saw Yan Shu walking out carrying a beige Lady Dior bag, her steps calm and composed. Behind her were two people in police uniforms, who must have just finished giving their statements.

Upon seeing Qu He, she paused and stopped in front of them.

Her gaze swept lightly over Qu He, then quickly moved past her and looked at Zhuang Bieyan to her side and behind her.

When she saw Zhuang Bieyan's hand on Qu He's waist, her eyes turned slightly cold, but she quickly returned to normal.

"Teacher Qu He, are you alright?" She rushed forward to grab Qu He's arm, but Qu He dodged her.

Yan Shu's hand froze in mid-air without any embarrassment. She withdrew her hand and said apologetically, "I had just dropped Mr. Luo off at his hotel when I received a call from the police station saying that you, Ms. Qu He, had been in a car accident while driving my car. It really scared me."

"I'm so sorry, the wine in the back seat was given to me by the organizers to deliver to Mr. Luo. I originally planned to give it to him after the banquet, but I got busy and forgot."

"Also, I lent this car to a friend a few days ago, and she accidentally bumped it. She hasn't had time to get the headlights fixed yet. I made all of this clear to the police when I was taking her statement, so as not to cause you any trouble."

The police officer following behind stepped forward, exchanged a glance with Gu Yu, and nodded slightly.

With these two sentences, Yan Shu completely absolved herself of any involvement in tonight's car accident.

Qu He felt a tightness in her chest.

She knew the trickery in Yan Shu's words, but every sentence sounded so reasonable that even the police couldn't find any flaws.

Yan Shu sighed, still feeling lingering fear. "I watched the live stream tonight too. Luckily, you didn't drink the iced wine. Otherwise, if something had happened, I would have been in real trouble."

As Qu He watched her orchestrate and perfectly portray herself as an innocent victim, filled with remorse, her anger, which had been building up all night, suddenly flared up.

She could no longer hold back, took a half step forward, and looked directly into Yan Shu's hypocritical eyes. "Teacher Yan Shu is so thoughtful, she even went out of her way to explain so many details to the police."

Yan Shu: "Of course, after all, it's my car, and I can't let you suffer in vain."

"I wouldn't say I feel wronged," Qu He said, a slight smile playing on her lips, though it didn't reach her eyes.

"I just thought that you were busy taking care of Old Master Luo and worrying about the wine provided by the organizers. You even remembered to remind me at the banquet that the iced wine was alcohol-free, and you remembered even the small thing that the car headlight was broken. But when you lent me the car, you forgot to remind me."

She slowed her tone, emphasizing each word, "You've been the only one to experience all these coincidences and oversights; it's a shame you don't buy a lottery ticket."

Qu He's words did not directly accuse anyone, but rather brought all those so-called coincidences to the forefront, yet every word was veiled as a stab in the heart.

It was like an invisible slap on Yan Shu's hypocritical face.

Yan Shu's perfect smile froze slightly, and a hint of panic flashed in her eyes, but she quickly suppressed it.

"What do you mean by that, Ms. Qu He? I understand you're upset because you just went through something bad, but you can't just make assumptions out of thin air. The police officers have all confirmed that I have nothing to do with tonight's events. Are you questioning the fairness of the judicial process?"

"You know better than anyone what I mean. I was just saying it casually, why are you so anxious?"

Qu He glanced meaningfully at Yan Shu's hand clutching her bag, "But what you just said reminded me. Qiao Mian wasn't at the banquet, how would she know I drank iced wine? Could it be..."

She paused for a moment.

Yan Shu's face paled instantly.

The two policemen's eyes fell on Yan Shu, with a hint of inquiry.

Qu He sneered, then looked at Gu Yu as if she had suddenly realized something and said, "Officer Gu, have you investigated this matter? Do you think it's possible that Qiao Mian bribed one of the waiters?"

Gu Yu continued, "It's not impossible."

Qu He nodded deliberately, "That must be it. It couldn't be that someone secretly leaked it to her at the banquet."

Her tone turned cold. "That would be utterly despicable. Those who scheme to use others to do their dirty work should pray they never leave a trace, otherwise, the next one to fall from grace might be someone else entirely. Don't you agree, Professor Yan Shu?"

Yan Shu managed to remain calm and nodded twice.

Seeing her flustered appearance, Qu He finally felt a little better.

After saying that, she stopped looking at Yan Shu's expression, straightened her back, and brushed past her.

Zhuang Bieyan followed closely behind, not even sparing Yan Shu a glance.

But in Yan Shu's mind, it was even more damaging than Qu He's sharp accusations.

Why, even in this situation, would he not even glance at her?

If I can't have your love, am I not even worthy of hating you?

...

After completing the supplementary statement, it was already late at night.

From the moment she got into the car, Qu He sensed that Zhuang Bieyan was in a bad mood.

Although he held her hand the whole time, he avoided eye contact with her. His jawline was taut, and he was as silent as a mountain shrouded in dark clouds.

Qu He sighed silently in her heart.

Are all 30-year-old men so emotionally volatile?

They were perfectly fine at the hospital and the police station, so why are they acting strangely now that they're alone together?

A man's heart is like a needle at the bottom of the sea.

The atmosphere in the back seat was oppressive and somber. Even the driver couldn't stand it and made up a lame excuse that the streetlights were too bright and blinding, so he pulled up the partition.

After arriving home, Zhuang Bieyan still held her hand, even more firmly than in the car.

In fact, Qu He had a vague guess as to why he was angry, but she couldn't bring herself to do it, so she pinched his finger and shook it.

This was a little gesture they often used between them; no matter how emotional he was in the past, this intimacy would soften him up.

However, the man, who was usually very perceptive, pretended not to understand anything and ignored the action.

He quietly withdrew his hand, bent down to untie her shoelaces, and then took out slippers from the shoe cabinet and placed them in front of her.

Throughout the entire process, he still did not look up.

Qu He looked at his bent back and clicked her tongue in amazement.

Oh no, I can't even hold your hand anymore.

While she was feeling uneasy, she noticed that Zhuang Bieyan remained in a bent-over, half-squatting position for a long time without moving.

His gaze fell directly on her calves.

Qu He has a little habit: whenever she puts on long pants and changes her shoes, she subconsciously pulls the pant legs up to her knees to make it easier to move around.

Now her trousers were rolled up to her knees, and following Zhuang Bieyan's gaze, one could see a bruise below her knee.

I must have bumped myself during the sudden braking in the car accident. With several things happening all night, I didn't even feel the pain.

Zhuang Bieyan stared intently at the bruise.

Qu He felt the low pressure emanating from him grow even colder, and his hands holding the slippers turned white.

Oh no, oh no.

Qu He quickly pulled down her trouser leg.

Knowing she was in the wrong, she wanted to take the initiative to start a conversation.

But my mind went completely blank.

What about those high-EQ communication skills?

Get it into your brain quickly!

I clearly saw it online!

What's the difference between this and encountering the same question on an exam, only to realize you didn't pay attention in class?

Seeing that Zhuang Bieyan had already stood up straight, she grabbed his hand, "Um, don't forget to pay the driver's overtime pay..."

She realized how absurd it all was, and then changed the subject, saying, "I'm going to take a shower now."

She jogged into the bedroom, unaware of the increasingly somber face of the man behind her.

Qu He rummaged through the wardrobe, then quickly grabbed the clothes and slipped into the bathroom.

The sound of water was soft and gentle.

Zhuang Bieyan stood outside the bathroom door, his back straight and tall.

Suddenly, the bathroom door behind me was quietly pulled open a crack, and the humid heat and the scent of jasmine shower gel wafted out.

Qu He poked her head out halfway. "Zhuang Bieyan, I forgot to bring a bath towel. Could you hand it to me?"

The figure outside the door stirred.

Zhuang Bieyan took a bath towel and walked to the door, just reaching out his hand.

Suddenly, a wet hand reached out from under the door, grabbed his wrist, and gently pulled.

Caught off guard, Zhuang Bieyan was led into the warm and humid bathroom.
