Chapter 14 Good Morning, Sister-in-Law

Zhou Quan also subconsciously looked at her small box and saw a very familiar money bag inside.

Li Mai took out the packet of medicine powder and handed it to Zhou Quan.

Seeing the look in his eyes, she took out her purse and asked, "Is this yours?"

Zhou Quan nodded, "Yes, when the accident happened at our factory, ten people died and five were injured. The owner paid fifty taels to each of the dead and ten taels to each of the injured."

"Oh, what about Zhuzhu's parents? Didn't they give her any compensation?" Li Mai asked in surprise.

"We lost money. We gave her a hundred taels, but the clan head took it. It's said that the clan head is Zhuzhu's father's cousin. He didn't leave Zhuzhu a single penny and even said that Zhuzhu wasn't their clan's child. He said in front of the owner that he didn't recognize Zhuzhu as his child." Zhou Quan shook his head. This was why he felt sorry for Zhuzhu and finally decided to bring her back.

The child was only one year old at the time, and the clan didn't want him. If he didn't take care of him, the child would starve to death or be sold sooner or later.

"That clan chief only took a liking to Zhuzhu because she was young and no one stood up for her. He did that for the sake of one hundred taels of silver. The main reason was that Zhuzhu's mother was not registered in the clan's genealogy by her father, and Zhuzhu's name was not on the genealogy either."

"They met and got married on the construction site. Zhuzhu's father never took her mother back home. Her mother was a lonely woman with no family. When they got married, it was just the construction site's fellow workers who came to celebrate."

“After the accident at the construction site, their clan found out quite quickly. They came, took the money, and left. I was injured at the time, and no one else was willing to stand up for a one-year-old child, so this is how it ended up.” Zhou Quan shook his head helplessly.

Li Mai glanced at him silently. To be honest, this guy really was a kind person, and he was worthy of his pale yellow life spirit.

He must have accumulated a lot of merit at the young age of twenty-two, and must have done a lot of good deeds!

"Should I return this money to you?" Li Mai thought for a moment, then took out the money bag. The whole family had to make a living and definitely needed money. Didn't he say yesterday that this money was his family's only savings?

"Keep this safe. It's for you. Use it as you see fit. We can manage to make ends meet. Your mother has never touched this money, and we've managed to get by all this time." Zhou Quan reached out and pressed the money bag back into the box.

Li Mai glanced at him, smiled, and didn't insist any further. Oh well, she could just take it out when she needed it later; there was no need to argue with him now.

Zhou Quan took the medicine packet and was about to apply the medicine to her.

"Is this the white cloth that was used to bandage the wound before?" He saw a roll of white stuff in the box, which looked like it still had bloodstains on it.

Li Mai nodded. "Yes, do you want it wrapped up again?"

"Let me bandage it up!" Zhou Quan took it out and skillfully applied medicine and bandaged it for her.

"In the period immediately after the injury, we wounded patients often helped each other. I will do that."

Zhou Quan always seemed to be able to sense what Li Mai was thinking and could always resolve her doubts at the right time.

Li Mai gave a soft "oh." This person must be very smart; he could guess what she was thinking.

With this, Li Mai's forehead was once again wrapped with a white gauze, just like before.

She could already imagine what her family would think when they saw her with a white cloth wrapped around her head after she went out!

"Do we really need to wrap it up? Won't it scare our family?" Li Mai touched it with her hand, feeling that it was a bit frightening, even though it was just a small injury on the back of her head.

But there was no duct tape in this era. To bandage a wound, you had to wrap it all the way around. Luckily, she didn't wrap it all the way around her neck, otherwise she probably wouldn't be able to breathe properly.

"It's okay, I'll tell them, you go open the door and call Xiaolin and Xiaolei over for me."

Zhou Quan helped her close the wooden box. "Put your things in the wardrobe too. There's a lock in the wooden box on the wardrobe, and you can lock the wardrobe as well. Keep the key with you."

Li Mai hummed in agreement, got off the ground, put his wooden box into the wardrobe, moved it a little, and placed it at the bottom. He then put his clothes and some other things on top of it.

She closed the cabinet lid, but didn't lock it, and then turned and left.

She felt there was no need to lock it. He was home all day, and locking it would be like keeping him at bay, which would probably make him uncomfortable.

Li Mai opened the door and went out. Seeing that there was no one in the yard, she quickly gathered up the clothes that she had washed the night before, carried them back into the house, and then went out to call for help.

It seems he needed to use the outhouse, which is why he asked me to call his two younger brothers over.

But she didn't know which room the two brothers lived in, so she could only knock on the door of the west room first.

Just as she was about to knock, the door opened and Old Man Zhou came out.

"Good morning, Dad!" Li Mai greeted him subconsciously.

"Okay, up so early? Your mother and Tao'er just went to bed not long ago. Is something wrong?"

Old Man Zhou came out and closed the door. When he turned around, he saw the white cloth wrapped around her head. He subconsciously wanted to ask what was going on, but then he seemed to remember something. He moved his lips, took back the question he was about to ask, and looked away from her head. His face darkened.

He wondered if his wife had slipped and fallen while helping their son take a bath last night.

"My husband asked me to call my two younger brothers."

Li Mai wondered why her mother-in-law and sister-in-law didn't go to sleep until almost dawn.

"Oh, I see. You go back to sleep first. It's still early. I'll go wake those two boys." After saying that, Old Man Zhou went to the east room with his hands behind his back.

Old Zhou belatedly realized that his daughter-in-law seemed to be wearing his son's undergarment? Not sure, he'd take another look.
