Zhou Quan frowned. "If you need money, you can get some from my father. I've told you that before."
Zhou Heng shook his head. "It's not about borrowing money. I hate those greedy people. I broke off the engagement. Her family wanted us to break off the engagement last year after they heard about our disaster. But after you guys led everyone in building new houses in our village, they saw that the government was helping us. Plus, my parents had the matchmaker send some of the relief grain that my family received. So, her family stopped mentioning breaking off the engagement last year."
“But, during the New Year, didn’t the clan chief distribute silver to everyone for living expenses? Not long after, her family sent word that she was sick and asked me to go see her, so I went. Then, she quietly told me that her family asked her to tell me to give me two taels of silver as New Year’s money.”
“My family was also short of money, so I didn’t agree to give her any. I only agreed to make her a dress. She agreed, but when I left, I saw that her family looked unhappy and no one came out to see me off. I was very unhappy at the time, but then I thought, I’m marrying her, so I should just have less contact with them in the future.”
"Who would have thought that this summer, my parents mentioned to no one that they wanted to get married in August, but her family actually demanded that I give them twenty taels of silver as a bride price before they would agree to the marriage. I can borrow twenty taels of silver, but how will we live after that?"
“When I got angry, I told the matchmaker that I wouldn’t marry her and that the engagement was off. I also had the matchmaker return the pair of shoes and handkerchief she had given me. But her family didn’t want to cancel the engagement and wanted to argue with my family.”
"I got fed up, so I told my parents that I was going out to work and that I wouldn't want this marriage anymore."
Zhou Heng shook his head and looked at Zhou Quan, "Brother Quan, I came to you not to borrow money, but because I want you to help me find a job. I'm not afraid of hardship or fatigue. I don't want to go back to the village for the time being."
"I secretly told my parents before I left that I came to town to find you," Zhou Heng added.
