Chapter 6: Do I Still Have a Chance to Stand Up?

“Okay, Mother, I’ll go get it right away. We’ll cook after my sister-in-law and brother-in-law finish their wedding ceremony,” Zhou Tao readily agreed.

She liked this woman at first sight, so naturally she was willing to give it to her.

"Second and third sons, you two go to the woods behind the house and gather more firewood. After dinner, we'll boil a pot of water so your eldest brother and sister-in-law can take a hot bath tonight," Zhao instructed her daughter, then turned to her two sons.

"Okay, Mom, we'll go right away." The two brothers readily agreed.

"Don't just stand there, go and invite the old clan chief and a few uncles over. The wedding ceremony will be in a little while, and we need an elder to witness it. I'll go prepare some dishes, and we'll set up two tables tonight to invite our close neighbors and elders." Zhao said as she went to the kitchen.

Because of her eldest son's special circumstances, when Matchmaker Zhou went to fetch him, she wasn't sure if she could bring him back. So she made two preparations: if she could bring him back, today would be her eldest son's wedding day, and she would use the few things she had at home to make it a lively occasion.

If we can't bring her back, we'll reschedule. The betrothal gifts have been given, and the engagement is settled. We'll definitely be able to bring her back sooner or later.

Now that the person has been brought back, we can start making preparations.

"Grandma, what is Zhuzhu doing?" Little Zhuzhu had two small buns on her head, tied with red ribbons, and was wearing a pink dress. She looked very cute.

"Come with Grandma, go peel peanuts for her." Zhao took Zhuzhu's hand and led her to the kitchen.

We can't let this little darling ruin our son's wedding night.

Zhao looked down at Zhuzhu. She was a pitiful child. If it weren't for her eldest son's kindness in bringing her back and making her the family's little darling, she didn't know where she would be sold to suffer now.

Oh, my little darling, you are so lucky, but my son, because he had a daughter before he was married, didn't get married until he was twenty-two.

As Zhao walked, she sighed inwardly.

But no matter what, the outcome is good. The eldest brother is kind-hearted, and now he has been rewarded for his good deeds by meeting a kind girl who is willing to marry him.

After watching his younger sister leave, Zhou Quan shook his head with a helpless smile, picked up his chopsticks, and handed them to Li Mai, saying, "Eat!"

"Thank you!" Li Mai took the chopsticks and waited for him to pick them up.

Zhou Quan glanced at the plate of dumplings; there weren't many, and it seemed he didn't intend to eat them, leaving them all for her.

Li Mai looked at her in surprise, "Aren't you going to eat? Didn't Tao'er say they were harmony dumplings?"

Although she had never been married in the apocalypse, she knew that the meal eaten on the wedding day should be a harmonious meal, and that it was appropriate for the two of them to eat together.

Zhou Quan paused. Yes, the "Harmony Dumplings"—he had forgotten.

He picked up his chopsticks, placed a dumpling in her bowl, and said softly, "Eat up!"

Seeing Li Mai lower her head to eat, he picked up a piece and started eating.

Zhao had poured vinegar into their bowls, and the two ate in silence.

Zhou Quan ate three and then stopped eating.

Li Mai looked at him, and he shook his head. "You eat, I'm not very hungry!"

Li Mai was indeed hungry at this point, so she didn't stand on ceremony with him and started eating with her head down.

The original owner was usually very active and had a good appetite, so Li Mai ate all the remaining dumplings on the plate.

Perhaps because she hadn't eaten for three days, she felt a little uncomfortable in her stomach after suddenly eating dumplings, but it was within her tolerance, so her expression didn't change much.

Fortunately, these dumplings are vegetarian, so they won't put too much strain on my empty stomach.

Zhou Quan watched her eat, a smile playing on his lips. His little wife certainly had a good appetite.

Because of his limited mobility, he dared not eat too much at each meal, and even more so to reduce the number of times he had to go to the toilet.

He had difficulty using the outhouse and always needed his younger brothers' help.

As a result, he appears thin and bony.

After Li Mai finished eating, she put down her chopsticks, looked around, and seeing that there was no cloth to wipe her mouth, she simply wiped her mouth with her sleeve and held out her hand to him.

Zhou Quan met her gaze with a puzzled look.

Give me your hand.

Li Mai had eaten her fill and was in a good mood, so she decided to check his pulse to see how he was feeling.

Zhou Quan was surprised; his young wife also knew medicine?

His hand slowly reached out and was grasped by Li Mai, who pressed his palm against his pulse point.

Zhou Quan paused. Her method of taking the pulse seemed to be different from that of a typical doctor.

Li Mai closed her eyes and concentrated, trying to sense his life force again, but she still couldn't feel it. Even when she tried to mobilize her spiritual power and special abilities through the space, the spiritual veins remained unresponsive.

She opened her eyes and looked up at his forehead. Just as she had guessed, she could see Zhou Quan's soul, which was also pale yellow. It seemed that he was a kind person who had done many good deeds.

Helpless, she could only press three fingers on the pulse point and begin to concentrate on listening to the pulse.

Zhou Quan watched her quietly, feeling that his young wife was giving him an increasingly strange feeling.

Some of her movements were strange, yet they seemed perfectly reasonable, as if that was how she was supposed to be.

After listening to his pulse, Li Mai looked at him and said, "Your body is very weak. If you don't eat properly every day, you won't live for more than a year."

Zhou Quan was taken aback, pursed his lips and looked at her, but ultimately said nothing and lowered his eyes.

"The luckiest thing in a person's life is to be alive. Only when you are alive are there infinite possibilities. If you die, then there are no possibilities left."

"Compared to being alive, not being able to walk is nothing. Besides, this should have happened in the last two or three years, right? I remember the marriage certificate said you were only twenty-two years old. Live well, you have a long life ahead of you, and there's still a chance to heal your legs."
