Chapter 28 Complete the first mission
Father Gu was very clever and skillful. She just gave him a simple description, and Father Gu was able to recreate it exactly as she said.
And after knowing that she was using it to teach Gu Yuhe, he carefully ground off the burrs on the bamboo so that it would not prick her hands.
The first bamboo slip she took out had a picture of a person walking on it. "Look, what's drawn on it?"
Goudan answered first. "A person? A person?"
Gu Yuhe was a step late and felt a little annoyed.
"Yes, Goudan is awesome." Gu Jiayue nodded and praised Goudan.
Goudan blushed at the praise and scratched his head. The figure on the bamboo slip looked exactly like the Master, and it was hard for him not to recognize the difference.
Gu Yuhe on the side snorted and secretly vowed that next time he would answer the question before Goudan.
"Let's continue. Pay attention and observe. The way this person walks is very similar to the character we just learned." Gu Jiayue took out a white paper with the three characters "Ren Zhi Chu" written on it and placed it aside for the two children to compare.
"This, this!" Gu Yuhe was sitting on the left side of Gu Jiayue, closer to the white paper, so he pointed at the word "人" first.
"That's right! Yuhe reacts so quickly!"
Gu Yuhe raised his eyebrows and glanced at Goudan, his competitive spirit clearly revealed.
But Goudan didn't notice at all and even clapped his hands with a smile. "Gousheng is really amazing!"
Gu Jiayue smiled and pulled out a card with the Chinese character for "人" (person) written in cursive script. "The writing we use originates from the simple pictures and symbols used by primitive people to record events. In ancient times, people carved simple patterns on cave walls or pottery to record important information in life, such as hunting results and sacrificial scenes. These patterns are pictographic, similar in shape to the objects they represent."
"Look carefully, don't the character for this person and the image of this person look very similar?"
The two children nodded repeatedly.
"Great! Now let's draw the person in your mind."
The two children are still young, and this is their first time to come into contact with these things. If we ask them to memorize a lot of knowledge points right from the start, it would be a bit too much and may even cause resistance in the children.
So Gu Jiayue planned to conduct today's class through the picture memory method.
It seems to be quite effective, and the two children seem very interested.
Especially after she took out the specially made sand table, her inquiring eyes lit up even brighter. "Second... Master, what is this?"
"This is the writing tool I made for you."
Just thinking about it makes me tired. She had done a lot of preparation for this class, writing the lesson plan three times. She also made many teaching aids. This sand table was one of them.
Once again, I would like to thank my clever and skillful father for his kind sponsorship.
The sand table is made of wood and shaped like a tray, then filled with fine river sand. Add a sharpened bamboo stick as thick as a brush, and you're done.
As for why they didn't just use paper and ink, it wasn't because Gu Jiayue couldn't afford it, but because she took Goudan's family situation into consideration.
Goudan’s family is so poor that they can barely afford porridge. How could they possibly buy him paper and pen?
But learning is not a matter of one or two minutes. You can use paper and pen here, but what about after you go back?
She was really afraid of losing this student whom she had worked so hard to trick because of a piece of paper.
Of course, another point is that today is the first class, and the two children need to be given time to accept it.
"Come on, look up at me, this is how we hold the pen."
There are many ways to hold a brush, but the three most commonly used ones are:
The first method is to hold the pen with five fingers.
The first step—yè (擫): Place the first joint of your thumb against the inside of the pen tube. Twist the pen tube with your thumb joint, applying force from the inside out. This acts as an inward, embracing force on the pen tube, keeping it stable in your hand. For example, when writing regular script, this thumb force helps control the vertical direction of the pen, preventing it from tilting.
The second step is to press the pen tube with the top joint of your index finger, applying force in opposition to your thumb to constrain the pen tube. The force of the index finger is directed from the outside inward, counterbalancing the force of the thumb. In the actual writing process, the index finger plays an important supporting role. It works in conjunction with the thumb to flexibly adjust the angle of the pen tube. For example, at the turning point of a stroke, subtle movements of the index finger and thumb can change the direction of the pen tip.
Step 3—Hook: The first joint of your middle finger hooks around the outside of the pen barrel, applying force from the outside inward and downward. This action strengthens the pen's stability in your hand and assists the thumb and index finger in lifting and pressing movements during writing. For example, when writing a vertical stroke, the hooking force of the middle finger helps control the speed and force of the pen's downward stroke, making the stroke more stable.
Step 4—Guarding: Press the base of your ring finger's nail against the inside of the pen barrel, applying force from the inside outward and upward. This prevents the pen barrel from sliding sideways during writing. When writing horizontal strokes, the grip of your ring finger balances the force of your other fingers, ensuring the pen barrel remains stable.
Step 5 - Pushing: The pinky finger presses against the ring finger to assist it and increase the stability of the force. When writing large strokes or for long periods of time, the pinky finger's push can better help maintain the balance of the entire pen grip.
The second method is the single-hook grip. This grip involves pinching the pen barrel between the thumb and index finger, with the middle finger resting against the inside of the barrel, and the ring finger and pinky bent in the palm. This grip allows for a more flexible tip, making it suitable for writing more dynamic scripts, such as running and cursive scripts. However, this grip reduces the stability of the barrel and requires a high level of pen control. It's not suitable for beginners or young children.
The third method is the double-hook method. This method is similar to the five-finger method, but places greater emphasis on the hooking and holding of the pen tube with the fingers. Its advantage is that it allows for excellent control of the direction and force of the pen tip. For beginners, this method is helpful for learning basic strokes. The double-hook method allows learners to more clearly understand the trajectory of the pen tip on the paper, helping them accurately grasp the starting and ending points of the strokes and the changes in thickness.
This is the double-hook pen-holding method that Gu Jiayue taught them.
The two children watched and imitated Gu Jiayue, slowly writing the simplest character "人" (person) on the sand table with bamboo sticks.
Gu Yuhe wrote quickly but poorly. Each word was limp and he staggered like a drunk person.
Goudan wrote slowly, neither hurried nor slow, trying hard to replicate Gu Jiayue's handwriting with every stroke.
People say that seeing a person’s face is like seeing his handwriting, and the personalities of the two children can be seen from their handwriting.
Gu Yuhe is impatient and restless, but he has an active mind and is a bit clever.
Goudan is a steady, calm and collected person, but a bit timid and indecisive.
The wind became much gentler after the sun went down.
A gentle breeze brought a slight coolness. Gu Jiayue held Gu Yuhe's little hand and taught him little by little how to control the pen and write.

Gu Jiayue paused, and the words on the sand table were all destroyed. Gu Yuhe looked at his second sister with an accusing look.
She didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "Sorry, my hand was shaking. Remember the feeling just now and practice it on your own."
Didn't the task complete until the class officially started? This system actually has a cheating prevention mechanism!
Gu Jiayue couldn't help but be amazed that this system actually had a mechanism to prevent cheating.
Really advanced.
