Everyone stared at his erratic behavior, bewildered and wondering how much he owed.
Su Xian seemed to have his head completely focused on the gambling table, and hadn't won anything yet.
You can't gamble, or you'll become stupid.
But Su Xian hadn't realized the problem yet. He let out a long breath and asked confidently, "Who owes you money?"
Meng Qi took a small box of IOUs from the guard behind him, spread them on the table and said, "Here are more, you can tear them up slowly."
Su Xian exclaimed in surprise, "I didn't write this much? This is all fake!"
Even if he worked himself to death, he couldn't possibly write so many IOUs.
Su Wenyuan fiddled with the jade pendant, saying with a mocking expression, "Of course it's fake. The real one hasn't been revealed yet! The IOU was shown to others when you denied it, but don't you know whether you actually lent it or not?"
Meng Qi laughed out loud. He suddenly felt that Su Xian was even more foolish than him.
"Don't you even use your brain? Do you think the princess would actually deliver this to you? You just need to check if the numbers on it are correct."
Su Xian's face was deathly pale, and with trembling hands, he picked up the IOU on the table and examined it carefully.
Everything is correct: the time is right, the number is right, but the handwriting doesn't look like his; after all, it's a fake.
Others looked over curiously, followed by a gasp of surprise.
"This...how did you get into this debt?"
After being amazed, they looked at the meager amount of silver notes they had scraped together for Su Xian. No wonder Su Xian said it wasn't enough; it wasn't just not enough, it wasn't even enough to pay off the change.
Su Xian forced himself to calm down and asked, "Why are these things in your hands?"
"Think for yourself!" Su Wenyuan grinned, her shrewdness sending chills down one's spine.
If a smart person were here, they should have figured out what was going on from the moment Su Wenyuan appeared.
Su Xian wasn't that he couldn't think of it, he just couldn't believe it.
Sun Gui was initially unwilling to lend him money, but later suddenly became generous.
Moreover, the interest rate is always changing; the interest is higher when borrowing less, which seems to be forcing him to borrow more.
And the jewelry from last time! Su Wenyuan did it on purpose too.
It wasn't that she happened to buy it; she came to force him to pay her back.
"You have such deep cunning! You schemed against me!" Su Xian shouted hoarsely.
Su Wenyuan sneered, "Don't slander people."
Su Xian stepped forward angrily, but was stopped by Meng Qi. He stood there pointing at Su Wenyuan and said, "You are so vicious, trying to drive me to my death."
"Aren't you vicious too?" Su Wenyuan retorted angrily, "You steal my clothes and jewelry, steal my silver, and you even come over to beat me from time to time? You don't even spare the maid's things!"
He didn't dare to touch every single maid in the manor.
After all, things could easily escalate, and Su Yuan might discover his gambling addiction.
But since the people around Su Wenyuan were fine, they didn't dare to complain, because complaining would only lead to them being accused of slander.
On one side was the exploitation by Wang Shi and Su Lin'er, and on the other side was the brutal beating by Su Xian.
It's truly remarkable that they managed to survive until they grew up.
After those past events were brought up, Su Xian's momentum weakened somewhat, but he was still very unconvinced.
“I was young and ignorant back then, and you were so petty.”
Su Wenyuan couldn't stand it anymore. She took a deep breath and ordered, "Give him a beating first, let me see how generous he is. Don't kill him, I'm still waiting for the money!"
Meng Qi had wanted to make a move for a long time, but as soon as he waved his hand, Su Xian fell to the ground.
Meng Qi looked at Su Wenyuan helplessly, wanting to say that he hadn't used much force.
"Change people, change people!" Su Wenyuan found two people who seemed to know their limits, and pushed Yuexiu over at the same time.
If there hadn't been other people around, she would have gone up and kicked them a couple of times.
None of Su Xian's friends tried to stop him, not because they were particularly afraid of Su Wenyuan.
Some were still holding a grudge about what had just happened, while others realized that something big was about to happen and knew that they couldn't stop it on their own.
Two other people were counting IOUs. One IOU was repeated multiple times, but the different numbers on it indicated that there was more than one IOU.
"Princess Consort Chen... is all this silver real?" The man looked at her incredulously after counting it.
The shock in his heart surpassed everything. He used to worry about displeasing Su Wenyuan when he questioned her, but now he couldn't care less.
Su Wenyuan replied, "Every single one of these transactions is genuine. If he doesn't acknowledge it, we can go to the government office. I will then hand over the IOU he wrote himself to the prefect. If the prefect is afraid to investigate, then we'll go to the palace! Paying back debts is a matter of course."
Meng Qi added, "Not only these, but there are also some that he borrowed and then returned. Since he didn't take those back, there's no need to take them. Just look at the ones that weren't returned."
That portion of the interest was alarming; showing it off would make Su Wenyuan seem too heartless.
Upon hearing this answer, the group looked helpless, unsure whether to stay or leave.
Su Wenyuan was about to call a halt when she saw that they had almost finished fighting when Su Yuan rushed in shouting.
"Stop! Stop! What are you doing? Stop right there!" Su Yuan was so anxious that he almost lost his shoes.
He rushed back after hearing that Su Lin'er had hosted a banquet to invite her friends, but they were all frightened and returned home.
Before that matter was even clarified, Su Xian was beaten up here again.
Behind Su Yuan followed Crown Prince Sheng Yuanhe.
Sheng Yuanhe wanted to comfort Su Yuan, but when he learned that Su Yuan was not at the mansion, he went elsewhere to meet him. After the incident at the Su mansion, he followed him back to see what had happened.
But as soon as he saw Su Wenyuan, he regretted coming along.
With Su Wenyuan around, it's not going to be a good thing.
It might even implicate him.
Before Sheng Yuanhe could come up with an excuse to leave, he was surprised by Su Xian's bruised and swollen face.
Then look at the men who had been hitting her; they had all retreated behind Su Wenyuan.
"Doesn't Princess Consort Chen even bother to avoid hitting people these days?" Sheng Yuanhe couldn't describe his shock.
Even as the crown prince, he cannot be so arrogant, so what right does Su Wenyuan have?
Sheng Yuanhe was not only surprised and puzzled, he even wanted to ask Su Wenyuan how she did it.
Su Wenyuan gestured for Meng Qi to bring her a chair and said with a smile, "I also avoided people! It's just that His Highness the Crown Prince didn't know."
Sheng Yuanhe looked at the chair Meng Qi had brought over, but dared not sit down, suspecting there was something wrong with it.
He carefully examined the chair inside and out, but found nothing wrong. It was just an ordinary chair. Why was Su Wenyuan suddenly being so nice to him?
Seeing how guarded he was, Su Wenyuan knew it would be a lie to say she didn't want to laugh.
"There are no thorns on the chair, what are you looking at?" Su Wenyuan asked.
Sheng Yuanhe coughed awkwardly and said, "I don't think you have any good intentions. If you want something, just say so."
"I want His Highness the Crown Prince to stand up for me, huh?" Su Wenyuan smiled. "I was worried that with just a few people here, they might wrongly accuse me without distinguishing right from wrong, but now that His Highness the Crown Prince has arrived, it's perfect!"
