Chapter 5 The Princess Wants to Burn the Prince to Death

If this good-for-nothing hadn't made so much stuff, left no teapot, and sent everyone away, would this fire have happened?

Sheng Jingyu didn't stop him. He hadn't recovered yet either. He was already in poor health, and now he was coughing so badly that his lungs felt like they were going to explode.

"Go and summon the imperial physician!" Meng Qi finally realized something was wrong.

Meanwhile, many people in the capital saw the fire and, upon closer inspection, recognized it as the Prince Chen's residence!

Today is Prince Chen's wedding day. Without a doubt, this fire was started by Prince Chen to burn Princess Chen to death and destroy the evidence!

The crown prince was still awake. Upon seeing the firelight, he excitedly rushed into the palace, intending to file a proper complaint.

Many ministers wrote memorials overnight and went to the palace as soon as they finished, afraid of being too slow.

Su Yuan was stunned the moment he saw the flames. He woke Wang Shi and asked, "Why is the Prince Chen's mansion on fire? That wretched boy wouldn't have really tried to assassinate the Prince, would he?"

"It's over, it's over! You insist on keeping those dowries! They weren't yours to begin with, so what's wrong with giving them to her?" Su Yuan roared in fear.

Wang was also frightened and remained silent for a long time, but after thinking about it carefully, she felt it was impossible.

"Don't panic! This fire must have been started by Prince Chen. How could Su Wenyuan, a young lady with only one maidservant by her side, set fire to Prince Chen's residence?"

“Even if it was arson, the fire wouldn’t be this big. It would have been extinguished as soon as it saw a spark. The servants of Prince Chen’s mansion aren’t dead. This fire must have been started by Prince Chen. He’s trying to cover up the crime.” Wang’s words were reasonable and well-founded.

Su Yuan didn't listen; his hands were trembling.

Suddenly, a servant reported that the Crown Prince had sent someone to invite Su Yuan to the palace to jointly file a complaint against Prince Chen.

He is Su Wenyuan's father; his biological daughter died, and he is the aggrieved party.

Su Yuan was relieved and his face lit up with joy.

Su Wenyuan not only didn't start the fire, but she also died in it, which saved us a lot of trouble.

Several ministers joined forces to accuse Prince Chen of disregarding human life.

When the Emperor found out, he was furious. He had clearly warned Sheng Jingyu, so why did he not listen?

The Prince Chen's residence was still in chaos.

Sheng Jingyu was still angry and kept telling herself to calm down.

Think about whether Su Wenyuan started the fire or not.

Just then, the eunuchs from the palace arrived.

The imperial physician hasn't arrived yet, and he won't come. So many imperial physicians have died in the Prince Chen's mansion, what physician would dare to come? Meng Qi was just so anxious that he sent someone to invite him.

"Oh my, Your Highness, what's going on..." The eunuch looked at him in astonishment.

His clothes were burned to tatters, he was covered in black ash, and his hair was extremely messy. He didn't look like the arsonist at all.

Meng Qi asked guiltily, "Your Highness, would you like to change your clothes?"

Sheng Jingyu gritted her teeth and replied, "No need!"

After changing his clothes, the charge of arson would fall on his head.

"Your Highness, may I ask, where is the Princess Consort?" The eunuch's heart pounded as he asked this question.

But this was the Emperor's order, so I had to ask.

Sheng Jingyu said, "Let's go, I'll take you to see it."

Actually, he also wanted to go and see.

The eunuch exclaimed in surprise, "The princess is still alive?"

Meng Qi glared at him, "She started the fire, of course she's alive..."

Sheng Jingyu abruptly interrupted, "Where is he being held?"

He didn't want Meng Qi to talk about it because he felt there was something wrong; when Su Wenyuan saved him, it didn't seem like she was faking it.

"She's been locked up in Zhuyue Pavilion. When the princess went in, she didn't make a fuss or cause any trouble, she just kept coughing," Meng Qi answered honestly.

"...Coughing, why are you making such a racket?" The eunuch was puzzled.

Sheng Jingyu was furious.

The eunuch only glanced at her from a distance and saw that Su Wenyuan was indeed still alive, but she looked just as disheveled as Prince Chen.

Sheng Jingyu inadvertently noticed her calf, part of which was exposed, bloody and mangled, as if burned.

"Meng Qi, the arson case hasn't been investigated yet, so don't mistreat the Princess." Sheng Jingyu gently reminded him.

"Yes." Meng Qi's gaze was firm, and he understood.

Sheng Jingyu wanted him to find a doctor to examine Su Wenyuan and change her clothes or something.

Meng Qi interpreted this as Sheng Jingyu being afraid that Su Wenyuan would escape, so he had to keep a close eye on her.

"His Majesty is waiting for Your Highness. Please come back to the palace with me."

"Okay." Sheng Jingyu didn't have time to say more.

Inside Chengguang Hall, Su Yuan was sobbing uncontrollably, crying and begging the Emperor to do his bidding.

The Emperor had a splitting headache, and the Crown Prince chimed in, saying that Sheng Jingyu was arrogant and cruel.

"Your Majesty, Prince Chen has long been infamous. You turned a blind eye to it before, but now that he is plotting to murder the Princess on their wedding night, you cannot ignore it!"

The Emperor was furious and rebuked him, saying, "The matter hasn't been investigated thoroughly yet, and you've already convicted Jingyu! Shouldn't we ask whether it was an accident or murder first?"

The Emperor had always favored Sheng Jingyu. Later, when Sheng Jingyu fell ill and went blind, the Emperor felt sorry for him and his favoritism became even more obvious.

Now that things have come to this, even though the Emperor believes that Princess Consort Chen is dead, he still wants to find a reason for Sheng Jingyu's death.

“Prince Chen has long declared that he will not let Princess Chen live; this is obviously murder,” the ministers said righteously.

Just then, Sheng Jingyu walked in unsteadily, still dressed as a victim, coughing every few steps.

The eunuch returned to the emperor's side first and whispered a few words in the emperor's ear.

The crown prince felt uneasy seeing him in such a disheveled state.

Su Yuan breathed a sigh of relief. If Sheng Jingyu was alright, then it must be Su Wenyuan who died.

Unexpectedly, the Emperor suddenly flew into a rage, slammed his fist on the table, and pointed at Su Yuan with trembling hands, saying, "Your well-educated daughter set fire to the Prince Chen's mansion on her wedding night, trying to burn Jing Yu to death, and you still have the nerve to cry?"

Su Yuan was so frightened that he sat down on the ground, his mind going completely blank.

Su Wenyuan had threatened him during the day, yet she actually attacked him that night?
