Chapter 180 The Shadow Strikes

Nothing happened that night, but the people in the cave didn't get much sleep.

In the darkness, everyone's breathing and heartbeat seemed amplified countless times, and the silent atmosphere was like an invisible net, tightly binding their nerves.

As dawn broke and the fires died down, faint light seeped in through the cracks in the cave ceiling, bringing a glimmer of hope to the dark cave.

The six explorers were about to leave the cave when a scream suddenly rang out from the entrance. The scream, like a sharp bolt of lightning, shattered the tense silence and pierced everyone's eardrums.

Everyone's bodies jolted violently, and fear instantly spread throughout their bodies like an electric current.

The man in the lead tried to remain calm, made a torch, gripped it tightly, and carefully walked towards the cave entrance.

Every step felt like it carried a thousand pounds of weight; my heart pounded like a drum, and beads of sweat glistened on my forehead in the firelight.

"Who is it? What happened?" he cried out in a trembling voice, but only deathly silence answered him, along with the echoing sound of his scream reverberating through the cave walls.

The people following behind him exchanged glances, their eyes filled with fear and unease.

One of the women gripped her companion's arm tightly, her nails almost digging into the other's flesh. "I...I'm scared," she said, her voice trembling with tears.

The man took a deep breath and continued to approach the cave entrance.

As the distance closed, his breathing became more rapid, and the torch in his hand trembled, causing the light and shadow to flicker erratically.

When they finally reached the cave entrance, the sight before them made them gasp in astonishment.

A figure collapsed to the ground, his back to them, his body convulsing uncontrollably.

The man held the torch closer and saw that it was his companion who had come on the adventure with him.

"Xiao Li, it's you? What happened?" the man asked anxiously.

He remembered that Xiao Li was clearly in the cave last night, so when did he come out? He was filled with doubt.

Xiao Li slowly turned his head. His face was as pale as paper, and his eyes were wide open, filled with fear and despair.

His lips trembled as he tried to say something, but could only utter muffled sobs.

The crowd gathered around him, trying to calm him down.

"Calm down, Xiao Li, tell us what happened."

Xiao Li was panting heavily. After a while, he said intermittently, "I... I had just reached the cave entrance when I saw... I saw a huge black shadow... It... it was extremely fast and disappeared in an instant."

"A shadowy figure? What shadowy figure? Are you seeing things?" someone questioned.

"No, absolutely not!" Xiao Li shouted excitedly, "That thing definitely exists, it...it also made a strange sound, like...like a roar from hell."

The group exchanged bewildered glances, their fear growing ever stronger.

They gazed out of the cave; the sunlight was bright, but it couldn't dispel the gloom in their hearts.

“Perhaps it’s some kind of wild beast,” a more composed man analyzed. “But in any case, we can’t just sit here and wait to die; we must get out of here as soon as possible.”

Everyone nodded in agreement. They helped Xiao Li up and prepared to leave this terrible place together.

However, just as they stepped out of the cave, a sudden gust of wind swept in, extinguishing their torches. Darkness instantly enveloped them again, and their fear reached its peak.

"Ah!" The woman's scream rang out again, sounding particularly shrill in the strong wind.

The man tried to remain calm and shouted, "Don't panic, everyone! Hold hands and stay close to me!"

However, the fierce wind raged, blowing them about and making it impossible for them to maintain a stable formation. Just then, a low roar came from afar, as if the mysterious dark shadow was approaching them.

"Run!" someone shouted, and everyone scattered and fled. They ran wildly through the mountains and forests, branches tearing their clothes and stones tripping them, but they dared not stop for even a moment.

The man grabbed Xiao Li and ran desperately down the mountain.

Their breathing was rapid, and their hearts felt like they were about to jump out of their throats.

The roar behind them grew closer and closer, as if the footsteps of death were closing in.

"No, running like this isn't going to work," the man said, stopping and panting. "We need to find somewhere to hide."

They looked around and spotted an abandoned wooden hut not far away. "Quick, go there!" the man shouted, pointing to the hut.

As if grasping at a straw, everyone rushed toward the wooden house.

After entering the cabin, they quickly closed the door and used heavy objects to hold it shut.

"Huff... huff..." Everyone collapsed to the ground, panting heavily. However, their hearts were still in their throats, wondering if the mysterious dark figure would find their way here.

After a long time, there was no more movement outside.

The man cautiously walked to the window and peered out through the crack.

All was quiet outside, with dim light still shining on the ground, as if everything that had just happened was just a nightmare.

“Perhaps… it’s gone,” the man said softly.

Everyone breathed a slight sigh of relief, but the fear in their hearts could not be completely eliminated.

They knew that this experience would leave an indelible shadow on their lives.

After confirming that it was safe outside, they slowly opened the door and stepped out of the cabin.

The white light shone on their faces, but it could not warm their cold hearts.

They planned to walk silently down the mountain, their initial excitement and anticipation gone.
