The way back was very difficult to walk on; not only were there thorns everywhere, but you would also step on some unknown corpses.
Fear was inevitable, but staying was even more frightening, as they didn't know how many dangers awaited them in this desolate wilderness.
Captain Gao was sweating profusely. When they reached a cemetery, he felt a surge of fear, and the others followed behind him.
For some reason, the Night Witches around them started to cry out, "Gah...gaah...gaah..." The hoarse, screeching sound made the seven of them tremble.
"Auntie, what's going on? We just walked this road, how come we're back here?" Captain Gao swallowed hard and asked nervously.
"What's the big deal? It's just being lost in a maze!" Ma Hehua pouted.
"What? Ghosts...ghost wall? What should we do?" As soon as Captain Gao finished speaking, they heard the sound of a baby crying.
"Waaaaaah...waaaah..."
The sound was exceptionally loud, sending chills down the spines of the seven people and filling them with dread.
It was now two in the morning, and the mountains seemed boundless, with darkness stretching to the horizon.
The night wind blew gently, and the surrounding smell became unpleasant again. This time, the smell was different from that of the mass grave in Shigou; it had a faint musky scent.
"Let's go! Just go straight down this road in the middle. Don't look back. We've arrived at the children's cemetery. If you turn back, you'll be waiting for a feast!" Ma Linghua's calm voice came from behind.
The group nodded repeatedly, like chicks pecking at rice.
As they passed by, they felt as if countless children were crawling on them, and the musky scent was unusually strong, making them feel dizzy and lightheaded for a moment.
They could even feel children riding on their necks and heads.
Heart-wrenching cries came from behind the seven people, but they remembered Ma Linghua's words and did not turn around.
Not only were my clothes soaked with sweat, but the mental anguish was the most painful part.
When they finally left the children's cemetery, they dared to turn back and look at the countless small graves. They felt a mix of fear and pity. Just how many children were buried here?
It was so densely packed that you couldn't see the end of it.
"What are you looking at? Hurry up and leave! Do you want to keep them company?" Ma Hehua said impatiently.
Then the group came to their senses. What had just happened to them?
When they saw the countless graves, the seven of them felt their hair stand on end. They had actually pitied a group of ghosts just now. Were they crazy?
"They're so disobedient! I told them not to turn back, but those brats just wouldn't listen." Ma Hehua was exasperated. If she hadn't discovered them early, they would have become wet nurses for those children!
After leaving the baby grave, we were close to Jianshan Village. On the way back, we were terrified and almost died. When we saw the cement road to Jianshan Village, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
Village Chief Wu was restless at home. He didn't sleep all night, sitting in the main room drinking cup after cup of tea.
"Slap slap slap..."
Just then, there was a knock at the door. He quickly went to the door and cautiously asked, "Who is it?"
“Old Wu, it’s me, your Aunt Ma.” Ma Linghua’s strong voice came from outside the door.
Village Chief Wu opened the door and looked at the disheveled people, feeling somewhat unable to bear the sight.
Their clothes were tattered, and they reeked of decay. Their disheveled appearance made them look like refugees fleeing famine.
"Come in! Put the body on the wooden board, and tomorrow we'll invite a Taoist priest to perform a ritual and bury the body!" Ma Linghua instructed.
"Auntie, isn't your ritual the same?" Captain Gao asked, not caring about anything he didn't understand. He was a worldly man now.
"We don't perform rituals, but we can help people pass on to the afterlife, though that's a rather difficult task." Ma Hehua rolled her eyes. Ask, ask, ask my ass!
Captain Gao wasn't upset at all. The two junior policemen who had put the body away were now relieved. Carrying a dead body, especially one that could run away, had almost scared them to death.
The case was reported to the leadership by Captain Gao, but how it was resolved was beyond his control; it was beyond his authority.
The three walked along the road, looking utterly bewildered.
Xiaoya's house was empty, and none of the three dared to sleep alone. Xiaoya had no choice but to squeeze the four of them into one bed.
The next morning, the three members of the Ma family left Jianshan Village early, but this time they faced another problem.
"Mom, let's take the carriage! We might get lost on this mountain road." Ma Hehua knew very well that her mother couldn't remember the way; after more than ten years, the road was probably overgrown with weeds.
Ma Lihua nodded; she certainly didn't want to go into the mountains to feed the mosquitoes.
So the three members of the Ma family waited at the station for the 811 bus.
"That's strange, why isn't he here today? Is he late?" Ma Hehua took out her phone and checked the time.
There's a bus that runs at 8:30 in the morning, and if it doesn't come by then, it will be at 10:30. It was Wednesday the 24th, and there were hardly any people around. The three members of the Ma family waited for several more hours, but by 10:30 they still hadn't seen the bus.
Until I saw Wu Dali drive his car out of the open space a hundred meters from the village entrance.
Ma Hehua stopped his car and said bluntly, "Dali! Take us home! We've come all this way to Jianshan Village, you can't expect us to walk back!"
Wu Dali; "……………………"
He had paid for the ride, but seeing Ma Hehua's sinister smile, he immediately said, "Hey! It's no big deal! Get in the car, I'll give you a ride, it's on my way."
