Night fell as dark as ink, thickly soaking into the Li family compound and swallowing up all the lingering noise of the day.
Li Xin crouched down, leaned close to Su Zhenzhu, half-covered her mouth with her small hand, and whispered in a very low voice, but could not hide the admiration in her voice, "Grandma, our great-grandmother is really amazing."
Su Zhenzhu understood immediately, nodded slightly, her eyes filled with helplessness and emotion, and replied softly, "How could it not be amazing? Ever since your father came into the family, this house has been like it's under a curse. There's always work to be done. Your second uncle is the same; he's busy all day long."
As she spoke, she subconsciously rubbed her arms, as if recalling the events of the day. "I think she's a bit too fierce. Today I saw her smash several tables with a single blow. Her strength was so great that even Iron Palm might not be as formidable as her. My mother-in-law must have been a martial arts expert back then, a hidden master."
_
The five brothers were trapped in the house like hot steamed buns in a steamer, tossing and turning, unable to sleep from the heat. The kang (a heated brick bed) felt like it was covered with thorns, and no matter how they lay down, they felt uncomfortable.
Li Wen sat up first, ran to the next room, nudged Li Su, and suggested, "Hey, since we can't sleep anyway, let's go for a walk in the backyard to clear our heads."
Unexpectedly, the brothers filed out of the courtyard, as if they were on the same wavelength.
Step into the backyard shrouded in night.
The moonlight shone down, covering the ground as if it were covered with a layer of silver frost, but it failed to dispel the mysterious atmosphere that permeated the surroundings.
"Which university do you attend?" Li Xin broke the silence, his gaze turning curiously to Li Wen.
Li Wen scratched his head, a blush creeping onto his face, and replied softly, "I studied philosophy at Haicheng University."
He looked like a child who was holding a precious treasure but was afraid of being seen.
"Wow! That's impressive."
Li Xin offered a casual compliment, but his eyes revealed a hint of bewilderment.
Li Wen's eyes suddenly lit up, like a candle flame lit in the dark night, and he asked expectantly, "You know?"
Li Xin was taken aback, scratched his chin, and admitted frankly, "I don't know! What's wrong? Anyone who can go to university is pretty amazing, what's wrong with that?"
Li Wen's fervent hopes seemed to be doused with cold water; his lips twitched, and he was momentarily speechless.
"By the way, Li Su and I discovered a well in the backyard today. Shall we go take a look?"
Li Xin frowned and ignored him.
After thinking about it, I still said, "Don't go, it's probably haunted."
Li Xin's words were like a pebble thrown into a calm lake, creating ripples. The other four were stunned for a moment, and then burst into laughter.
"Don't joke around, there are no ghosts in this world!"
Li Xin patted Li Xin's shoulder while laughing.
Li Yu chimed in jokingly, "That's right, we have to believe in science. As the old saying goes, getting into science is the real deal."
Li Xin, however, persisted. He crossed his arms, scanned the crowd with his gaze, and asked in a serious tone, "Hmph! Want to go? Fine, are you all virgins?"
These words were like a freezing spell; the smiles on the four people's faces instantly froze. They looked at each other, the air seemed to be frozen, so quiet that you could hear a pin drop.
"Tsk! Alright, alright, it's obvious that none of them are honest. Looks like I'm the only one who's honest. I'm telling you, if anything goes wrong when you go, don't blame me."
Li Xin pursed his lips, feigning helplessness.
"What could possibly be wrong? Let's go!"
Li Su waved his hand dismissively and strode forward. The others hesitated for a moment, but were also drawn by curiosity and followed closely behind. Their figures disappeared into the night as they staggered toward the house behind the dry well. The moonlight stretched their shadows long, like an ominous omens.
Stepping into the courtyard, a musty smell hits you, and the old doors creak in the night wind, like the low murmur of an old man in his twilight years.
All around was quiet. Wild grasses peeking out from the cracks in the bricks swayed eerily in the wind, as if telling untold stories of the past.
Li Xin swallowed hard, her voice trembling involuntarily: "This place is so gloomy and creepy."
Although Li Wen was also apprehensive, he forced himself to remain calm and patted Li Xin on the back: "Don't be afraid, it's just that the old house has been uninhabited for a long time."
Besides, this house is built so luxuriously, what's there to be afraid of?
Even so, my steps unconsciously became lighter, each step feeling like I was stepping on a taut string, and the slightest carelessness would shatter the eerie silence.
The group slowly approached the well. The wellhead was pitch black, like the gaping maw of a colossal beast, silently breathing out icy air, waiting to devour any reckless intruders.
At the bottom of the well, a dark abyss of death and decay lay, where Jiang Tao, like a demon crawling out of the abyss of hell, lay on the muddy, cold ground, enjoying her horrifying "feast."
Her already broken body was now completely ruined, with not an inch of intact skin to be found. Pus and blood mingled, oozing foul-smelling liquid. The putrid smell permeated and lingered in the cramped well bottom like smoke, almost tangible, making one want to vomit.
Suddenly, as if sensing something amiss, she abruptly raised her head, which was buried in the blood, her movements stiff and abrupt, like a rusty, wind-up doll.
His disheveled hair hung down on both sides of his face like withered grass, covered with blood and clumped together in horrifying strands.
Her eyes were a pair of scarlet pupils burning with the fires of hell, so deep that they were unfathomable, filled with nothing but greed and cruelty, just like the ferocity of a hungry wolf locking onto its prey.
The tip of his tongue darted out, slowly licking his dry, blood-stained lips. The action carried both a lingering craving for the blood and a wary awareness of the unknown threat.
"Did that woman find out?"
The doubts in her heart were like a curse, making her increasingly anxious and driving her to take action.
She twisted her limbs to support her body, her movements strange and slow, like a giant spider crawling on its web. Each step was accompanied by a rustling sound, the rubbing of rotting flesh against the well wall, the dripping of thick blood. Each sound struck the silent bottom of the well, playing a terrifying symphony.
