Chapter 125 Night Candle Rules 3: Decision.
Nanmen Jue broke free from Zhang Jin's grasp.
She rushed to the frozen people and, amidst their terrified and pleading eyes, pulled out props and placed them on them—some to stop the bleeding, some to accelerate healing, some for protection… but none of them worked.
Nanmen Jue bore all the consequences, but could only watch helplessly as the eyes of several people were covered by a grayish-white shadow, turning them into another form of living dead, and then they pounced on her.
Screams erupted as the adjutant yelled "Major, get out of the way!" and raised his gun. The next second, a flash of cold light appeared, and almost no one saw what Nanmen Jue did. They only felt that she seemed to have circled around the ghost servants. When she returned to her original spot, the newly born ghost servants all froze in place.
The next second, a shallow crack appeared on their necks, and the crack gradually widened and widened... their heads rolled off neatly, rolling in all directions.
Silence fell over the surroundings. Everyone who witnessed this scene seemed like a chicken with its neck caught in its throat. A few seconds later, the first scream rang out, and the entire stadium echoed with deafening screams.
"Quiet--"
A clear female voice came from the speakers.
"Sound attracts eeriness. Calm your emotions and shut your mouth!"
The command was concise and clear. Under the threat of death, the screams immediately subsided. Everyone covered their mouths, their terrified gazes shifting back and forth between the dead ghost servant and Nanmen Jue.
Nanmen Jue calmly sheathed his white bone knife, his gaze meeting Mo Guiwei Chongru's stunned eyes before he casually looked away.
Soon, a petite woman rushed over. When she saw the ghost servants lying on the ground, she gasped. But she didn't panic. Her sharp gaze swept over the people closest to her and locked onto Nanmen Jue.
"Did you kill them?"
Judging from the voice, it was the same female voice from the broadcast earlier.
Seeing Nanmen Jue nod, the woman said, "I am the temporary person in charge here. My name is Tang Shi. Please let me speak with you in private."
She turned her head and saw Howe, then said, "Did you lead the way here?"
Huo Wei seemed a little afraid of her, and nodded obediently. Tang Shi said, "Then you come over here too."
Watching them leave, Zhang Jin suddenly burst into uncontrollable laughter.
The surroundings were silent. No one dared to ask a question or speak to him. He chuckled to himself for a while, then turned to look at the others, pointed at Nanmen Jue's back, and said, "This guy is really interesting, isn't he?"
...
The stadium is very large, but it seems to hold over a thousand people. Even though it's spacious, it still feels crowded. Despite this, there are still a few separate spaces that can be used as rooms.
"Please sit down," Tang Shi said politely to Nanmen Jue.
A microphone and recording equipment were placed on the table in the room. Presumably, Tang Shi had made the broadcast here to quiet everyone down. This must be her office.
“I was originally the Party Secretary of Wuchun Town. After Wuchun Town became a ghost town, the government organized everyone to take refuge, and I was in charge of this refuge.” Tang Shi placed a bottle of water in front of Nanmen Jue, her gaze lingering on the crow on Nanmen Jue’s shoulder for a few more seconds. “Were you sent by the United Government?”
Nanmen Jue didn't touch the water, his attitude was very indifferent, "Yes. How many such shelters are there in Wuchun Town?"
Tang Shi didn't take it to heart, assuming that this was just her aloof personality. Just now, Nanmen Jue had effortlessly killed several ghost servants, demonstrating her strength, and Tang Shi had a good impression of her.
“There aren’t many people in Wuchun Town. We had prepared fifteen shelters beforehand.” Her expression darkened. “But after the communications were cut off, we haven’t received any news from the other shelters. We don’t know how they are doing now.”
"How long has this place been a ghost realm?" Nanmen Jue asked.
"It's been six months." Tang Shi gave a wry smile. "Ever since the strange phenomenon appeared, we've been preparing for it, praying that it wouldn't befall such a remote place as ours. But things didn't go as planned, and the strange phenomenon still came. It's still the Snow Woman."
The plot summary states that this world entered the apocalypse about a year ago, and after holding out for half a year, Wuchun Town was still targeted by the supernatural and became a ghost realm.
"The Snow Woman is no good," Huo Wei muttered, huddled to the side. "If it were a rule-based ghost realm, as long as you're careful not to break the rules and watch out for the ghost servants, people could survive. But with the Snow Woman here, all life is frozen. Crops won't grow, plants and animals will freeze to death, and people won't be able to eat or drink..."
“That’s the truth.” Tang Shi sighed and looked at Nanmen Jue with relief. “Fortunately, I sent out a distress signal before the signal completely disappeared. It seems the United Government received it and that’s why they sent you. We’re saved. You know, after holding out for six months, we were out of ammunition and food and had no other options.”
She patted the equipment on the table with considerable pride; clearly, it was these seemingly rudimentary machines that had given them a glimmer of hope.
Nanmen Jue's gaze lingered silently on it for a moment.
Her expression was indifferent and calm. Tang Shi looked at her. The smile on her face gradually disappeared, and she asked somewhat uneasily, "What's wrong? Is something the matter?"
Nanmen Jue shook his head. "Have you looked for anchor points here before?"
Anchor points, again anchor points, serve a similar purpose: the eerie entities cannot be killed, but as long as the anchor points are destroyed, the current eerie domain will disappear, and people will still have a chance to escape.
“We know where the anchor point is,” Tang Shi suddenly said, “but…”
Nanmen Jue raised his eyes, "But?"
“It’s just that we can’t destroy it.” Tang Shi smiled bitterly. “The anchor point is located in the place where the Snow Maiden lives, and it is protected by a large number of ghost servants, so it is impossible to get close.”
"Where does the Snow Woman live?" Nanmen Jue's tone was somewhat strange. She thought that the essence of these eerie things was "ghosts." What need did ghosts have for a place to live? Didn't they all just float around?
“Yes.” Tang Shi nodded matter-of-factly.
Nanmen Jue realized that this might be common sense in this world, so she stopped asking questions. She stood up and said, "Tomorrow I will take people to investigate the situation. You should bring out all the candles you have."
Howe's eyes widened: "Why?! You've been given all the candles, how are we supposed to survive?"
Before Nanmen Jue could speak, Tang Shi slapped him on the head. "As long as we destroy the anchor point, we can all get out, right? Once we're out, we'll have more candles. If we stay here, the candles will run out sooner or later!"
Huo Wei covered his head, his arrogance immediately subsiding, and said aggrievedly, "I understand, Sister Tang Shi, please don't hit me."
Both of them thought they were about to be saved, and they bickered and argued happily. Nanmen Jue glanced at them, then turned and left.
The office was separated from the outside by a short corridor, making it somewhat dim. Crow nuzzled Nanmen Jue's face and whispered, "Are you really sure?"
"It was decided a long time ago," Nanmen Jue said.
After walking a few steps, Nanmen Jue stopped again.
A tall, thin figure blocked the light coming in from the road. When he saw Nanmen Jue approaching, he tilted his head and looked over. The polarized light from his earring flashed briefly in the dim light.
"Shall we chat?" Zhang Jin asked.
Nanmen Jue remained noncommittal.
"I've told you some news, shouldn't you satisfy my curiosity?" Zhang Jin said with a smile, completely unconcerned about Nanmen Jue's cold face.
“What you’re saying is worthless. Just ask any indigenous person, and they’ll give you a more detailed explanation than you do,” Nanmenjue said.
“But I spoke before them,” Zhang Jin said. “Are you trying to renege on your promise?”
Nanmen Jue stared at him quietly for a moment.
Although each world's main god provides some explanation, the description for this world is very short, consisting of only one sentence.
"A year ago, a monster called the Weird appeared, the apocalypse arrived, and humanity formed a temporary united government to barely survive."
That's all.
The information Zhang Jin initially provided was rudimentary, but it was indeed somewhat useful. Nanmen Jue asked, "What do you want to ask?"
Having received the promise, Zhang Jin did not immediately press for details. He looked at Nanmen Jue thoughtfully and said, "Your personality is quite different from the information I received."
Nanmen Jue finally showed some expression, a half-smile flashing across his face. "I knew it, what else do you need to ask? What else don't you know?"
"You flatter me, you flatter me." Zhang Jin waved his hand, staring at the slight curve of Nanmen Jue's lips. "Looking at it this way, it does seem a bit like you. The person I heard you from was a wild, unruly, and lawless madman. How come you've become a block of ice in front of me?"
Nanmen Jue thought this person was crazy.
"Ask whatever you want, I have other things to do," she said impatiently.
"Oh." Zhang Jin nodded good-naturedly, then immediately asked, "How did you know about the 'anchor point'?"
Nanmen Jue suddenly looked up, and Zhang Jin, with a cold expression, met her gaze.
Both of them knew perfectly well that this "anchor point" did not refer to the anchor point of the Ghost Realm, but rather to the anchor point of the Reincarnation World.
Nanmen Jue laughed, his eyes revealing the very expression Zhang Jin had described—unrestrained arrogance and haughty disdain.
"I haven't even asked you yet, but you're already asking me." Her tone was flippant. "You're getting restless because someone else used the same method to improve their strength as you?"
Zhang Jin said, "I don't understand what you're saying."
"Can't understand human language? Then get lost."
The two stared at each other in silence. Zhang Jin, who had been leaning against the wall, straightened up.
What are you doing here?
Tang Shi's voice came from behind Nanmen Jue. She and Huo Wei also came out and looked at the two people facing each other with a puzzled expression.
"It's nothing." Nanmen Jue returned to his indifferent demeanor, not glancing at Zhang Jin again, and walked straight past him.
Zhang Jin's expression wasn't good, but she didn't care.
Tang Shi acted quickly; she gathered the remaining candles together and presented them to Nanmen Jue.
Even with their utmost frugality, they didn't have many candles left. The box, measuring 40 centimeters by 40 centimeters, was only half full. If Nanmen Jue and his group didn't come, they probably wouldn't last the month.
In this world, candles are the source of life, and the sight of so many candles immediately attracted a lot of attention.
“Although you’ll really need candles when you go out, I still hope you can leave us some,” Tang Shi said nervously. “Not too many, but as you know, there are too many people here, and if we don’t have candles, we’ll quickly attract those things…”
“I know.” Nanmen Jue gave her a deep look. “I promise I will get you out of here.”
Ordinary people have an almost innate trust in soldiers, and coupled with the strong sense of security that Nanmen Jue gave them, Tang Shi immediately showed a relieved expression. Behind her, many people wept with joy.
"Great! We're saved!"
"We'll be able to get out soon!"
"Waaaaah, I want to eat instant noodles..."
"I'll never have to suffer from the cold again!"
Everyone was genuinely happy, but Nanmen Jue watched them quietly, a resolute look flashing in his eyes.
At midnight, everyone except the night watchmen fell asleep, including the reincarnators. The more experienced the reincarnators were, the better they knew how to recover their strength as quickly as possible within the limited safe time.
But no one dared to sleep soundly. As soon as Nanmen Jue moved, all the reincarnators opened their eyes.
Wei Chongru glanced around casually and suddenly noticed that the candle box that had been placed to the side was missing. A bad feeling suddenly rose in his heart.
"Come out, everyone," Nanmen Jue said in a low voice, so that the reincarnators could hear him without disturbing the natives.
Everyone looked at each other in bewilderment. Mo Gui was the first to stand up and followed Nanmen Jue out without hesitation. The rest of the people looked at Zhang Jin, who chuckled and also stood up.
Everyone stood up and, not understanding why, followed Nanmen Jue outside the stadium.
"Stand back a bit," Nanmenjue said.
Everyone retreated, still completely bewildered.
Then Nanmen Jue took out a fire/arrow tube.
She aimed at the stadium, and with a bang—
A huge flame shot into the sky, and the entire stadium was reduced to ashes.
