Chapter 104 The Fungal Remains Frenzy 65 Arriving a Step Too Late.
Nanmen Jue stared at the bone knife held up in front of him, his eyes churning with complex emotions.
Ying Yao simply held it up, and after saying that sentence, he fell silent. Just like Nanmen Jue had said before that he would resent him, he didn't seem to defend himself. He only said what he wanted to say and did what he wanted to do. How others would understand or think after he finished speaking was not within his consideration.
Nanmen Jue raised his hand, hesitated for a moment, and then picked up the white bone knife.
After passing through Cheng Xiuye's hands, and likely having clashed with Ying Yao's lightsaber, the White Bone Blade's durability dropped significantly, with even fine cracks appearing on its blade. Nanmen Jue then put it away.
The two continued their journey in silence. After a moment, Ying Yao seemed to have restarted a machine that had crashed, and uttered a few words.
"Don't be sad."
"I'm not sad," Nanmen Jue said expressionlessly.
"You look sad."
"You can see my expression?" Nanmen Jue took a deep breath. "You saved my life, I shouldn't talk to you like that, but people aren't machines, I can't help it. Don't talk to me anymore, I don't want to argue with you."
"If something happens to Zhang Zhi, I will help you take revenge on them, but if I had to choose again, I would still come to save you."
Nanmen Jue squeezed his eyes shut. "I told you, don't talk to me anymore."
Her tone was harsh enough. I thought Ying Yao was also in a high position and was an arrogant person. I thought that by now she should be considered an ingrate. But I didn't expect Ying Yao to speak again.
"If you hate me, you can vent to me."
Nanmen Jue was almost laughing out of anger.
"You're my savior, my sister's friend, and I'm taking my anger out on you? What right do I have to take my anger out on you?"
Ying Yao spoke without emotion, but his excessive concession made him seem like a doormat. Nanmen Jue couldn't bring herself to speak harshly to him, and her heart was filled with even more resentment. She didn't look at him, but her tone revealed some genuine emotion, "I just don't understand, how much of a spell did my sister cast on you to make you do this? You said you didn't want to confront Ying Yao directly because it would be troublesome if the Ouroboros found out. Now you're openly fighting him, aren't you afraid of being found out? You saved me, and I didn't even say thank you, and you don't mind at all? This is very different from your image of keeping everyone at arm's length."
Ying Yao quickly answered the question: "At first, I did take care of you because of Nanmen Yu. If you want to know about me and her, I can tell you anything."
Nanmen Jue had no interest in delving into his past with his sister. "Wasn't it later?"
Ying Yao did not answer the question, and Nanmen Jue instantly lost the desire to ask further. The two stopped and stared blankly at the firelight burning not far away.
The entire area surrounding the hospital, which the remaining people of Ningde Town regarded as their last refuge, was engulfed in flames. It was almost dawn, and the fire burned against the pale blue sky. From a distance, it wasn't very noticeable; only thick smoke billowed out.
Nanmen Jue's already pale face turned even paler. Ying Yao couldn't see his expression, but his body stiffened slightly.
Both of them harbored an unspoken wish, but now that wish was shattered. Nanmen Jue felt dizzy and reached out to support his head.
Ying Yao immediately went to help her, but she pushed him away. She composed herself and started running.
Ying Yao quickly caught up.
Nanmen Jue was too badly injured and her strength did not support her to engage in such strenuous activity. When she got close to the hospital, she felt a heavy weight pressing on her chest, making her limbs feel increasingly heavy and almost unable to breathe.
She was scared.
If Zhang Zhi and the others really get into trouble, how can she face Ying Yao, and how can she face her own heart?
Another thing is, the hospital has become like this, so why haven't the crows come to find her? What exactly happened?
Filled with doubts, Nanmen Jue walked heavily but quickly to the hospital.
When the noisy voices reached his ears, Nanmen Jue's heart, which had been hanging in his throat, eased a little. When he saw Ji Chengying, who was covered in dust and loudly directing everyone to move the wounded, his eyes suddenly lit up.
The hospital wasn't on fire, it was bombed. The survivors are trying to save themselves, pulling survivors out of the collapsed ruins. The open space is full of wounded people, groaning in pain. It looks miserable and terrifying, but at least they are still alive.
Nanmen Jue strode closer, saw no one else, and walked straight toward Ji Chengying. Ji Chengying did not see her for a moment and was still speaking calmly.
Nanmen Jue looked at her. This innocent and clear-headed college student had grown up at an astonishing speed. From being able to only hide and not be able to help at all at the beginning, to being able to calmly direct and clean up the mess now, she must have gone through a painful transformation.
Just like Guan Junren.
As they got closer, Nanmen Jue could tell that the girl wasn't entirely unfazed by fear; she was forcibly suppressing her terror in her eyes. Nanmen Jue stood beside her and called out to her.
"Ji Chengying".
Ji Chengying didn't react at first. She agreed and said a couple of sentences, but when she turned around and saw Nanmen Jue's face clearly, she froze on the spot.
Her composed expression changed in an instant; her lips trembled a few times, and she suddenly rushed towards Nanmen Jue.
Nanmen Jue didn't dodge, letting her rush into his arms and burst into tears.
"Brother Nanmen! You're finally back! Waaaaah! That crazy woman is here, she almost killed us all..."
Sure enough, it was Yu Wanyan who arrived.
Nanmen Jue's throat was terribly dry. He raised his hand and gently touched the girl's hair, asking softly, "How are the others? What about Zhang Zhi?"
Ji Chengying's body trembled violently, and Nanmen Jue's heart sank completely.
“Brother Nanmen…” Ji Chengying lifted her head from Nanmen Jue’s arms, looked at her eyes with a trembling gaze, tears streaming down her ashen face, leaving clear traces.
Nanmen Jue gripped her hand tightly and said in a deep voice, "Tell the truth."
Even if she didn't say it, how could Ji Chengying possibly hide it from her? She was their biggest support.
Ji Chengying's tears flowed even more fiercely, and she pointed tremblingly in one direction: "Sister Deng and Brother Lu are over there... They told me to hide, so I hid, but they couldn't resist her, and Mayor Jiang was also pierced through the body by a puppet..."
Nanmen Jue's pupils contracted.
Ji Chengying turned her head, revealing a pair of sad, pitying, and guilty eyes. "I'm sorry, Brother Nanmen, I'm too weak. I couldn't help at all. She kidnapped Zhizhi and your crow. I couldn't do anything. I'm sorry..."
Before she could finish speaking, Nanmen Jue pulled her into his arms again and hugged her tightly.
"Did she set this fire too?" Nanmen Jue heard his own voice, which was so calm it was almost cold.
Ji Chengying noticed the change in her tone and nodded hesitantly.
"Alright, it's all over," Nanmen Jue said. "Continue rescuing people. Which way did Yu Wanyan run off to?"
Ji Chengying stepped out of her embrace, looked at her cold, blood-stained face, and suddenly trembled. She then pointed in another direction.
Nanmen Jue nodded and turned to leave when Ji Chengying suddenly called out to her.
"Brother Nanmen!"
Nanmen stopped in his tracks.
Ji Chengying's voice trembled, "How's your head? And Ying Yao and Brother Guan, they went out looking for you... Did you run into them?"
Nanmen Jue was silent for a moment, then said, "Be careful, and prioritize your own safety."
After saying that, she left quickly, not giving Ji Chengying another chance to ask questions.
The firelight was bright, but it couldn't compare to the rising sun. Nanmen Jue walked past the wailing crowd and over the ruins, intending to chase after Yu Wanyan in the direction she had left. But as he glanced at her along the way, he saw someone he hadn't expected.
Jiang Yansi was lying on a stretcher, and a young girl dressed as a nurse was bandaging the wound on his abdomen. She was crying as she bandaged it, and her whole body was trembling. She was obviously terrified.
"Don't be afraid, Xiaowen." Jiang Yansi was still able to speak, although her voice was extremely weak. "I'm fine now. After you finish wrapping up the food, go and take care of others."
"Mayor..." Nurse Xiaowen couldn't hold back any longer and collapsed to the ground, wailing loudly.
So many people were wailing and crying that her cries were barely noticeable amidst it all.
“Don’t cry…” Jiang Yansi said, his eyes already clouded with a grayish-white gloom, like all those who are about to die.
But he hadn't lost consciousness yet, and he could still see. He marveled at his own tenacious vitality, wondering if Old Zhang was just as amazing before he died.
Death was imminent, but he felt neither panic nor resentment. He had done everything he was supposed to do in his life, and he had nothing to be upset about regarding death. So he even looked around calmly, wanting to see the place where he had fought to the last moment.
Then he suddenly realized that the person bandaging him had changed.
Jiang Yansi was stunned. Before her appeared a face that was half shaved, bandaged, and still strikingly beautiful.
“Nanmen…Jue?” he exclaimed in disbelief, then paused, realizing he had spoken a little too loudly.
Just now, Ying Yao suddenly emerged from the shadows, silently handed Nanmen Jue a healing tool, and then silently disappeared for the time being.
"Don't speak," Nanmen Jue whispered. "Don't be surprised by what happens next, and don't ask any questions."
Jiang Yansi was stunned as she felt the restored strength. She looked up at Nanmen Jue in astonishment, her lips moved, but Nanmen Jue had already guessed what she was going to say.
"I couldn't save Father Zhang."
A look of realization and relief crossed Jiang Yansi's eyes. His withered hand grasped Nanmen Jue's, squeezing it tightly. "Child, Zhang Zhi..."
"Get some rest. I don't like saying things like this, but others need you." Nanmen Jue said, gently taking his hand away. "Even for the sake of these people, try to live on."
If this tool isn't enough to completely heal Jiang Yansi's penetrating wound, not only will Jiang Yansi have doubts, but all the natives here will have to wonder if it's a divine intervention.
A god? Nanmen Jue sneered inwardly. More like the King of Hell.
She didn't linger for long before getting up to leave, and Ying Yao quietly reappeared beside her.
“Thank you. If I don’t die, I will repay you for all of this,” Nanmen Jue said. “You don’t need to follow me anymore. I will handle things myself from now on. You should remember what I said.”
She had said before that if something really happened to Zhang Zhi, she would blame him.
“You need me,” Ying Yao said. “My mask is a prop that can pinpoint a person’s location.”
Nanmen Jue paused, then smiled enigmatically. "So that's why you've been following me so confidently all this time. You were waiting for me here all along. So you already knew that Yu Wanyan was in this town?"
Ying Yao was stumped by the sharp question, but after a moment, he nodded.
“She came with Cheng Xiuye and has been hiding in a different place from Cheng Xiuye. There are also three puppets with her.”
“Three,” Nanmen Jue said softly. “How many of the eighteen reincarnators do you think will survive this trip?”
Before Ying Yao could answer, Nanmen Jue wiped his face and asked coldly, "Where are they?"
...
With Ying Yao's precise location, Nanmen Jue, disregarding his exhausted state, and the two arrived at the destination as quickly as possible.
Unexpectedly, Yu Wanyan did not take the person away from Ningde Town. They were in an abandoned factory when they heard a sound. Yu Wanyan turned her head and gave Nanmen Jue a bright smile.
"Brother Nanmen, you came pretty quickly."
Nanmen Jue's gaze swept past her and landed on the operating table in front of her, his blood running cold.
