Lin Yuan looked at him in surprise, "You want to join the army?"
“Yes, I want to, but my parents want me to work in a factory. I don’t want to work in a factory. I want to join the army, but I didn’t know why I wanted to join the army before, or how to convince my parents. After listening to my brother-in-law today, I know how to talk to my parents about this.” Zhang Linguo looked at Lin Yuan with confidence and happiness on his face.
Lin Yuan smiled. The boy was quite thin, but very tall. He was only in the second year of junior high school, but he was already up to Lin Yuan's nose.
"Okay, it's good to have dreams. Study hard for your future. As for whether I will be drafted next year, I don't know yet. I'll find out next year."
"But I can promise you, if I come here, and if your parents agree to you going and register you, and the conditions are met, I will give you a chance." Whether or not one can join the army depends on many conditions.
"Yes, thank you, brother-in-law!" Zhang Linguo nodded emphatically.
As they were talking, they went to the backyard.
Zhao Huanhuan heard his voice from inside the house and quickly came out.
"Lin Yuan, I'm here!" She knew he was looking for her, and waved to him from the doorway.
Lin Yuan smiled at her and strode over.
"Sister, how about we take Lin Yuan out for a walk and see our village?" Zhao Huanhuan asked Lin Xia, who was inside the door.
Lin Xia replied, "Okay, wait for me a moment, I'll put on my cotton-padded coat!"
Lin Xia went to tell her parents, and then led Lin Yuan and Zhao Huanhuan into the village.
Zhangjiawan is called "wan" because it is a village located at the bend of a large river. The villagers' fields are flat, making irrigation easy. The soil here is relatively fertile, making it suitable for growing crops and fruits such as peanuts, watermelons, and sweet potatoes.
It was winter, and the river was frozen. When they came out, there were many people playing and skating on the river.
Lin Xia asked Zhao Huanhuan, "Huanhuan, do you want to go play on the ice? If so, have Lin Fei go back and get his ice sled."
Zhao Huanhuan shook her head, "No, let's just go over and walk on the ice."
There is another river a few miles outside Taojia Village, but it is too far away, and none of the villagers are interested in going there to play.
When they stepped onto the ice, the young people and children stared at them curiously.
When the young people who recognized Lin Xia saw Zhao Huanhuan and Lin Yuan, who were both good-looking, they all gathered around and greeted her with smiles.
Lin Xia responded to them with a smile and asked them what they had been doing for the past two years.
After exchanging pleasantries for a while, a young man quietly asked Lin Xia, "Lin Xia, is this young lady a relative of yours?"
Lin Xia glanced at Zhao Huanhuan, who was standing with Lin Yuan, looking into the distance and talking, and nodded, "Yes, she's Huanhuan from my aunt's family. You should have met her when you were little, don't you recognize her?"
"Huh? You've grown so big?" The young man seemed incredulous.
"Yeah, look at yourself, you've grown so old, you even have a beard!" Lin Xia knew what he was thinking, so she deliberately said he looked old, but she was secretly pleased with herself.
"Hehe, my beard is all downy, so I don't want to shave it. My cousin told me that once you shave it, the beard that grows back is all stubble, hard and coarse, and I'm afraid it will look even worse."
Lin Xia couldn't help but burst out laughing.
Zhao Huanhuan turned her head and glanced over. Seeing her cousin's uncontrollable smile, she pulled Lin Yuan over and said, "Cousin, what's wrong? What good news do you have? Tell us about it."
Lin Xia chuckled, clutching her stomach, before pointing to the shy-looking young man beside her and saying to Zhao Huanhuan, "Do you still recognize this kid?"
Zhao Huanhuan sized the other person up for a few moments, then suddenly nodded, "Could it be a potato?"
The original author wrote about a childhood friend in one of his essays. The friend was named Potato, whom he met in his maternal grandparents' village.
Zhao Huanhuan was just trying it out; it wouldn't matter if she made a mistake, since there's a big difference between childhood and adulthood.
When the young man heard Zhao Huanhuan call him by his nickname, he was both happy and embarrassed. "Hehe, Huanhuan, my name is Zhang Wannian now."
"Hmm, good name, better than Zhang Tudou!" Zhao Huanhuan replied.
"Pfft!" Lin Yuan couldn't help but laugh, but realizing it was impolite, she quickly stopped and whispered an apology.
Zhang Tudou looked at Lin Yuan curiously and asked Zhao Huanhuan, "Huanhuan, who is he?"
"Oh, I forgot to introduce him, this is my husband, Lin Yuan."
"Huh? You're already married?" Zhang Tudou couldn't tell if he was disappointed or heartbroken; the smile vanished from his face in an instant.
Lin Yuan glanced at him indifferently and nodded, "Hello!"
Zhang Tudou silently replied with "hello," inwardly lamenting, "I'm not doing well!"
I finally met a girl I liked, but I never expected that she was already married.
At this moment, others gathered around, including the village girls.
Several girls, upon seeing Lin Yuan, a tall, handsome man with elegant clothes, instantly became shy and coy, stealing glances at him every now and then.
Lin Yuan and Zhao Huanhuan could hardly miss the girls' gazes. When Zhao Huanhuan continued speaking, she looked at Lin Yuan. Lin Yuan glanced helplessly at his wife and took her hand. "Huanhuan, let your cousin talk to them. Let's go for a walk over there."
Lin Xia raised an eyebrow, knowing that the two wanted to be alone, and nodded with a smile, "Go ahead, come find me here in a bit!"
Zhao Huanhuan responded and walked away hand in hand with Lin Yuan.
Once they were out of sight, a group of people immediately surrounded Lin Xia. "Sister Lin Xia, who was that man? He was so handsome, tall, and had such a straight posture, like a soldier."
