After lying there quietly for a while, Zhao Huanhuan got up. As she picked up Lin Yuan's pillow to put it against the wall, she saw a letter under the pillow.
Zhao Huanhuan quickly picked it up. Just like the previous love letters, the envelope only had "To be opened by Zhao Huanhuan" and "Sent by Lin Yuan" on it.
Upon opening it, there were only two sheets of paper inside, with the familiar opening lines:
My wife is happy and my faith is joyful!
First of all, I want to apologize to you. Last night, because of my selfishness and reluctance, I had to say goodbye to you. Although I knew in my heart that I couldn't continue, and I was afraid that your body would not be able to handle it, I just couldn't help but think of you and wanted to stay with you a little longer!
I'm sorry. When I woke up this morning and saw you sleeping soundly, I wanted to wake you up, say goodbye properly, hug you, and kiss you. But I couldn't bear to see you so weak and sleepy!
If you're still in the same state as yesterday when you read this letter, don't get up yet. Go back to sleep. I told Mom that if you're not up by 9:30, she'll bring you some porridge to your room. When I come back next time, you can scold or beat me as you please, wherever you want!
I'm leaving, Huanhuan!
After leaving your side and returning to the army, I am just Lin Yuan, a soldier. I need to devote myself to my work. During the day, I dare not have any selfish thoughts about you, for fear that I will have the impulse to leave the army and go home to be with you.
Don't go out these next few days if you have nothing to do. Just rest at home and remember to get up and exercise, maybe do some boxing, to improve your physical condition and avoid getting sick.
I hope my Huanhuan can live a healthy life and work happily every day, waiting for me to come back!
When you go to sleep at night, remember to think of me, because I will think of you too!
Husband: Yuan
February 9, 1973 (the seventh day of the first lunar month)
After reading it, Zhao Huanhuan silently read it again. It was still a family letter, like a love letter, not suitable for others to read, only for the two of them.
He wrote down everything that happened under the bed at night, which shows that he was certain that no one would see the letter he left for himself.
After reading the letter again, Zhao Huanhuan put it away, went downstairs to put it in the bamboo basket in the cabinet, locked it, closed the cabinet, and then went back to the kang (heated brick bed) to continue tidying up the bedding.
"Huanhuan, are you up?" Aunt Chu's voice came from outside the door.
"Mom, I'm up. I'll be going out in a bit!" Zhao Huanhuan quickly replied.
Aunt Chu pushed the door open and came in. "Yuan'er told me to bring you breakfast before she left. Don't bother tidying up. Eat and rest for a while longer!"
Aunt Chu looked at her daughter-in-law's pale face and felt a little sorry for her. This brat must have kept Huanhuan up all night. Even if she was going to be away for a year, she shouldn't have done this. The child was already thin, and look how pale her face was.
"Mom, it's okay, I'm awake now!"
Zhao Huanhuan's face flushed. The look Aunt Chu gave her made her very shy. Aunt Chu must have known that she and Lin Yuan had been fooling around for too long last night.
"Hehe, listen to your mother, go and rest. I was young once too. When your father was young, he worked with a construction team to build power stations. He would be gone for more than half a year at a time. We had just gotten married then. Before he left each time, he would be very greedy. Plus, they were people who worked all year round and had good physical strength. How could our small bodies keep up with their antics for a whole night? So every time he left, I would get a minor illness and need to rest for several days before I fully recovered."
"Oh, in this respect, Lin Yuan and his father are really alike. Go and rest. Mom will stew that chicken in a bit and make you a couple of chicken soups to nourish yourself." After saying that, Aunt Chu went out with a smile.
This made Zhao Huanhuan, who was slowly sitting at the table and starting to eat breakfast, blush completely, but she also suddenly felt a warm feeling in her heart. This mother-in-law was really good to her.
She had witnessed too many wicked mothers-in-law tormenting their daughters-in-law, and she had a preconceived aversion to the role of mother-in-law in this world.
But the mother-in-law she encountered was truly like a mother to her.
This further strengthened her resolve to get through these next few years, build up her business, make money, provide a comfortable life for her family, and ensure her parents could live a more affluent life in their old age.
After Aunt Chu left Zhao Huanhuan's house, she saw her husband squatting in front of their door smoking. When he saw her come out, he looked at her with a suggestive gaze.
Aunt Chu walked towards him.
Uncle Lin stood up, pushed open the door, went back inside, and waited for Aunt Chu to come in and close the door. But then Uncle Lin suddenly reached behind Aunt Chu and locked the door.
"What are you doing? Why are you suddenly locking the door in broad daylight?" Aunt Chu looked at him in confusion.
Uncle Lin stubbed out his cigarette, placed the half-smoked cigarette on the windowsill, chuckled at Aunt Chu, and leaned down to kiss her.
Aunt Chu was stunned!
Aunt Chu blushed instantly!
She wanted to push away the old man who had suddenly gone mad, but considering that they hadn't been intimate for a long time, Aunt Chu didn't push him away. Instead, she raised her hand and placed it on his neck, responding to him.
Aunt Chu understood; it seemed that the man had overheard her words of comfort to her daughter-in-law.
After a long, passionate kiss, Uncle Lin's eyes gleamed with desire as he bent down, picked up Aunt Chu, and carried her to the edge of the kang (heated brick bed).
As soon as he was placed on the kang (a heated brick bed), Aunt Chu was so frightened that she quickly grabbed his hand that was unbuttoning his clothes and whispered, "No, it's broad daylight, it wouldn't look good if someone came in, and your wife is still here!"
Uncle Lin paused, his eyes gradually regaining their clarity. He coughed lightly, reached out and pulled Aunt Chu up, saying softly, "I know, let's get some rest early tonight."
"Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but I feel like I don't have the same passion I had when I was young. I didn't expect you to still remember when we first got married!" Uncle Lin sat down next to Aunt Chu, smiled shyly, held her hand and intertwined their fingers, and said softly.
