Chapter 4: The Cannon Fodder Ex-Husband Appears

Zhao Huanhuan snapped out of her daze and seized the opportunity to run behind Lin Yuan, bowing gratefully to him. "Thank you, comrade PLA soldier. We can go back on our own. Thank you!"

Then she turned around and looked at Hao Qiang with a fearful gaze, and said, "Comrade Hao, when I lived in your house, I always had nightmares and couldn't work the next day. I was a little scared, so I asked the brigade leader to help me change rooms."

"I won't be going back to your house anymore, so don't come looking for me again. Wenyan, let's go!" After saying that, Zhao Huanhuan grabbed Wenyan and the two of them turned and ran towards the Lin family's house.

Lin Yuan looked back and saw the two girls running towards their home. There were several other houses over there, so she guessed they were staying at one of their homes.

He didn't say anything more, but turned around and glared at Hao Qiang, "Are those two educated youth comrades? Hao Qiang, what are you trying to do?"

"Ah, it's nothing, Brother Lin Yuan, are you back to visit relatives?" Hao Qiang's plans were ruined by him, and he was furious at his meddling, but on the surface, he still had to greet him with a smile.

Lin Yuan nodded. "Yes, this year's family visit leave."

"Then you should go home quickly. Uncle Lin and Aunt Lin should have already gone back." After saying that, Hao Qiang turned and left.

However, as soon as he turned around, his face darkened.

If Zhao Huanhuan doesn't move back to her own home, how are he and his mother going to keep her here?

The woman in the county town gave them a hundred yuan, with the intention of having them "take good care" of Zhao Huanhuan and preferably leave her in Taojiawan Village forever.

He needs to go home and discuss with his mother what to do next.

Lin Yuan frowned as she watched Hao Qiang's retreating figure. Why was that kid still the same? He always bullied little girls when they were kids.

Hao Qiang is two years younger than Lin Yuan, and they played together since they were little.

Lin Yuan felt that this kid was up to something. Last year, when he saw Lin Yuan come back, he would always come up and follow Lin Yuan home to see if Lin Yuan had brought back any good cigarettes, hoping to sneak a pack of cigarettes back to smoke.

Thinking of her parents whom she hadn't seen for a year, Lin Yuan picked up the military bag on the ground, turned around, and strode towards her home.

When Zhao Huanhuan and Wen Yan returned home, they saw Aunt Chu picking vegetables in the yard.

Seeing the two of them rush back in a panic, Aunt Chu asked in surprise, "What's wrong, Huanhuan, Yanyan?"

"Aunt Chu, we just ran into Huanhuan's former landlord's son. He wanted to take her back home. It scared us to death!"

Upon hearing this, Aunt Chu stood up, frowning, "Are you two alright? What is this Hao family brat trying to do?"

Zhao Huanhuan shook her head, "It's nothing, Aunt Chu. I just happened to run into a People's Liberation Army comrade who helped me, and that's how we got back."

Aunt Chu breathed a sigh of relief after hearing this. "That's good. You two go back and rest for a while. I'll cook dinner."

"It's alright, we'll cook with you!" Zhao Huanhuan shook her head. Aunt Chu's son was back, and she would be happy to go back and talk to him soon, so she wouldn't have time to cook.

But since the person hadn't entered the gate yet, she didn't want to point it out. She just smiled, sat down on the small stool, and picked vegetables with her.

Aunt Chu paused for a moment after speaking, "You mean, you ran into a People's Liberation Army comrade who helped you?"

"Yes, he seems to know Comrade Hao Qiang." Zhao Huanhuan nodded.

Aunt Chu stood up and ran towards the gate, thinking that her son must have returned.

Just then, Uncle Lin came out of the house and saw his wife running out. He asked Zhao Huanhuan and the others in confusion, "Why is your Aunt Chu running?"

“We just saw a People’s Liberation Army soldier. Aunt Chu, do you think it was Brother Lin Yuan?” Zhao Huanhuan prompted him.

They had been living here for several days. Aunt Chu had told them that her son was in the army and had even shown them a photo of him. However, the photo was of Lin Yuan when he left, and he looked small and thin, quite different from his current appearance. She felt it was normal for her to pretend not to recognize him.

Upon hearing this, Uncle Lin also turned and ran towards the gate.

Zhao Huanhuan and Wen Yan exchanged a glance, then silently stood up and looked towards the main entrance.

At the gate, Uncle Lin ran into Aunt Chu, who had already greeted Lin Yuan. The couple followed Lin Yuan back, one on each side, with happy smiles on their faces.

"Oh my, as soon as Huanhuan mentioned the People's Liberation Army comrades, I knew it was you who came back, and sure enough!" Aunt Chu said happily to Lin Yuan.

Lin Yuan smiled when he saw his mother's happy smile. He was stunned when he heard what his mother said, wondering if those two girls were staying at his house.

Just as he thought of this, he looked up and met the two girls standing in the courtyard. His eyes also met Zhao Huanhuan's smiling gaze.

The scene fell silent for a moment.

Aunt Chu was overjoyed when she saw the look in the eyes of the two people. An educated youth paired with a People's Liberation Army soldier, hmm, not bad!

"Huanhuan, this is my son, Lin Yuan. He's the one who helped you earlier, right?" Aunt Chu took two steps forward and introduced the two of them with a smile.

Zhao Huanhuan quickly bowed again and smiled, "Thank you, Comrade Lin Yuan. I didn't expect it to be you. I didn't even recognize you just now. Speaking of which, Aunt Chu even showed us your photo!"

Lin Yuan nodded at her and smiled, "I never expected that the person I saved would be my own tenant."

Zhao Huanhuan smiled, said thank you again, and then she and Wen Yan stepped back a few paces to let the family into the house.

Lin Yuan glanced at her and walked into the main room.

Aunt Chu and Uncle Lin followed happily, and even told Zhao Huanhuan, "Huanhuan, Yanyan, you two pick the vegetables first, Aunt Chu will come out and cook them in a little while."

"No need, Aunt Chu, let's cook it together. Do you want to add any other dishes?"

"Hmm, just add some scrambled eggs and some stir-fried shredded potatoes, that'll do. Yuan'er loves these."
