Chapter 5: How about I get married during the holiday?

She had already scooped out the rice, and set the rice water aside.

This is in the north, and the villagers mostly eat millet rice, which is cooked by simmering the rice. They eat the rice and drink the rice broth afterward, which is very thirst-quenching.

Aunt Chu simply didn't say anything, but went to take out a plate of her pickled radishes and cut them into strips.

Not only does her son love these pickled radishes, but her two little girls seem to enjoy them too. She plans to pickle more when the radishes are ripe in the fall.

When it was time to eat, Zhao Huanhuan and Wen Yan subconsciously didn't want to sit at the table. Their son was back, and it should have been a warm moment for their family to reunite.

"Aunt Chu, you all eat, Yan Yan and I will go back inside to eat." Zhao Huanhuan and Wen Yan wanted to each take a bowl back inside to eat.

"No need, no need, come, sit down and eat with us." Aunt Chu knew the two girls were sensible, so she quickly called them over and asked them to sit down. How could they get to know each other if they weren't allowed to spend time with her son?

Zhao Huanhuan and Wen Yan exchanged a glance, looking somewhat embarrassed.

Lin Yuan also stood up and smiled, "Please sit down, comrades. If you leave like this, I won't be able to eat. I should thank you for taking care of my parents while I was away!"

Zhao Huanhuan glanced at him, smiled helplessly, and said, "Then I'll have to bother you."

When Aunt Chu saw that Zhao Huanhuan had agreed to stay, she looked at Wen Yan.

Wen Yan chuckled, glanced at Zhao Huanhuan, and said, "I'll go with Huanhuan, then we'll take our leave."

"No need to bother you, no need to bother you. You're all young people, you should have something to talk about. Don't be too reserved. Yuan'er isn't actually a talkative person." Aunt Chu greeted everyone and then smiled, trying to win over her son.

Zhao Huanhuan and Wen Yan nodded and ate in silence.

No one spoke; they all ate in silence.

After a long while, Aunt Chu glanced at Lin Yuan and asked, "Is your former class monitor still with you?"

Lin Yuan shook her head. "No, after he got married, he transferred to another unit and became a political instructor elsewhere."

"Oh, he's married? Does he have children?" Aunt Chu asked.

Lin Yuan paused, realizing she had said the wrong thing and had once again run into her mother's gun.
