Chen Qiangwei and Gu Ling'er had no time to talk. They put down their backpacks and started picking the fruits. They used both hands and were very busy.
When the backpack was full, Gu Aiguo's voice came from the loudspeaker.
Chen Qiangwei smiled. It was time to get off work. It was just the right time. After work, everyone was rushing home. It was the perfect time for her and Gu Linger to go down the mountain. They were sure they wouldn't run into anyone on the way.
After going down the mountain and walking for a while, Chen Qiangwei and Gu Linger saw Maodan, Goudan and seven or eight other children gathered in a circle, with their butts sticking out, doing something unknown.
Gu Linger threatened her nephew: "Maodan, you've been playing like crazy. It's time to go home and eat. Your brothers and sisters will eat up all the food soon."
Maodan looked up and saw his aunt and Chen Qiangwei coming back side by side. He quickly stood up, patted the dirt off his knees, and said like a little adult, "Aunt, Sister Chen, are you guys down the mountain? How was your harvest today?"
Upon hearing this, Goudan and other children also stood up, holding something covered in mud in their hands.
"Sister Chen is back? How was your harvest today?"
Gu Ling'er was very angry. Although she was a little impatient, she couldn't pretend that she didn't exist.
Chen Qiangwei put down the backpack and waved to them.
The eyes of the two clever kids, Maodan and Goudan, lit up and they ran over like they were running a race. When the other kids saw them, they also ran over.
Chen Qiangwei lifted the grass covering the backpack, revealing a row of pink, juicy peaches.
Seven or eight little brats, their mouths all turned into O shapes, and they praised her in unison: "Sister Chen, you are amazing. My parents also went up the mountain yesterday, but they only found a few half-cooked ones."
Chen Qiangwei stuffed two into each of them, and Gu Linger also put down her backpack and stuffed two into each of them. Although the peaches were small, the little carrot-head's hands were even smaller. He could hardly hold two in one hand, and he still had something else in the other hand.
Maodan looked at the good stuff he had just dug out and handed it to Chen Qiangwei, "Sister Chen, this is Mudongshu, it's very sweet. Here you go, thank you for the peach."
The others followed suit, and Chen Qiangwei harvested a handful of mud-covered yams.
Gu Linger was afraid Chen Qiangwei didn't know, so she gave her some scientific knowledge. "This is the most delicious snack here. Wash the dirt off, it's juicy and very sweet. When I was a kid, I didn't have candy, so I searched around the team for this to eat."
How could Chen Qiangwei not recognize mulberry? It was her favorite snack as a child. Back then, other children would deliberately slurp popsicles in front of her to make her jealous. She had no popsicles and didn't want to ask her grandmother for money, so she would go to the fields and dig mulberry.
It can be said that mudong yams accompanied me throughout my childhood.
Chen Qiangwei was about to get up when she noticed two children standing not far away, a boy and a girl. They looked about five or six years old, like Maodan and Goudan, and the girl looked only three years old.
Gu Linger followed Chen Qiangwei's gaze and said, "These are Brother Qingshan's son and daughter, Tiedan and Xiaoniuzi."
After hearing this, Chen Qiangwei understood. It was Gu Qingshan, whose educated youth wife ran back to the city. Wasn’t it said that Tiedan was the only boy in their family? Why did their clothes look a bit dirty?
Gu Linger: "Tiedan, little girl, come here."
Tiedan hesitated for a moment, looked at the peaches in Maodan and the others' hands, swallowed, and walked over holding his sister Xiaoniuzi's hand.
Chen Qiangwei didn't think about it too much, and like Gu Linger, she gave each of them two peaches.
"Thank you, Aunt Ling'er, and thank you, Sister Chen."
Quite polite.
Gu Linger stroked Tiedan's hair and said, "Why don't you go home yet? It's time for dinner."
Tiedan, "Grandma just came home to cook."
My aunt gave birth to a little brother some time ago, and now she stays at home to take care of him every day. She has to wait until the nanny comes back from work before she can cook.
Gu Linger nodded. "Okay, take the little girl back. The sun is so strong here, be careful not to get heatstroke." Then she said to the other little kids, "Go back. If anyone is found to have a problem during the screening, they'll have to go to the barefoot doctor every day to get medicine."
Children are afraid of bitterness. When they thought of the barefoot doctor's medicine, which was more bitter than bitter gourd, they couldn't help but frown and ran away.
Chen Qiangwei shouted behind him, "Wash the hair off the peach before eating it, otherwise your throat will itch."
"I understand, Sister Chen." With that, the person ran away.
Gu Linger shook her head as she watched Tiedan walking home with his sister. "My mom said Tiedan's aunt was so upset because she gave birth to a boy. Coincidentally, Tiedan's uncle became the vice-captain. She said it was good luck brought by her precious son."
Chen Qiangwei listened without saying anything. As an educated youth, she couldn't make comments or give orders to the people in Huaihua Brigade. However, she thought Tiedan would suffer in the future.
Alas, Tiedan and Xiaoniuzi can be said to be products of this era. There are not many of them now, but after a few years when the college entrance examination is opened and the educated youth can return to the city, it will not be uncommon for them to abandon their wives and children and husbands and children.
Gu Linger didn't expect to get a response from Chen Qiangwei, but there were some things she had to say and she needed someone to listen.
After returning home, Chen Qiangwei took out about 20 kilograms and poured the rest into a large wooden basin. She planned to make them all into dried peaches, both sweet and salty.
Wang Xiaomai and Gu Sannai had already finished their meal. Chen Qiangwei picked two ripe ones, peeled them and handed them to Gu Sannai.
Wang Xiaomai came over to help wash the peaches. After learning that Chen Qiangwei planned to make dried peaches, she washed the empty jars from Gu Sannai's house and turned them upside down under the eaves to dry.
Wash the hair and dirt off the peaches, and pile them in a dustpan. I have to go to work in the afternoon, so this is all I can do for now.
