Chapter 7: Not as Important as a Beast

Uncle Gu Wu was full of energy, "Of course Dahei and the others are important. Our Huaihua Brigade only has three cows, and Dahei is the main force of our brigade. We rely on them for the busy farming season and the double harvest.

How much work does Dahei do during the busy farming season? How much work can you do? Don't you have any idea?"

Chen Qiangwei suppressed a laugh, "Ahem, Uncle Wu, let's set off now. Didn't you say we have to travel at night if it's late?"

Upon hearing this, Uncle Gu Wu didn't bother to argue with Xu Hongli. He waved the whip and drove the ox cart in front.

"Okay, Dahei is leaving."

Xu Hongli kicked the ground in frustration, and happened to hit a big rock. "It hurts so much."

Xu Hongli jumped up with her hands covering her feet, her eyes reddening, "Even the stones bully me."

In just a short while, everyone had walked away. Seeing that no one paid attention to her, Xu Hongli limped along with a wronged look on her face to catch up with the main group.

Shengli Commune is not big. It took less than ten minutes to walk from the commune to the small road outside.

Chen Qiangwei was bored and chatted with Uncle Gu Wu.

"Uncle Wu, are there many educated youth in our brigade? Where do they all live?"

"About a dozen or so, some of them have already married in the countryside. Those who are not married live in the educated youth settlement. There are three rooms in the settlement, one for men and one for women, with the middle one being the main room."

After walking for more than two hours without realizing it, Chen Qiangwei was a little out of breath.

Although Wang Xiaomai is small, his pace is not slower than Chen Qiangwei and others.

"Aren't you tired?" Chen Qiangwei glanced at Wang Xiaomai, whose short legs were still quite strong.

Wang Xiaomai panted heavily: "It's okay, Sister Weiwei, are you tired? How about I hold you by my arm?"

I finally have the chance to repay Sister Weiwei for the steamed buns, pancakes and eggs.

Chen Qiangwei: ...That’s not necessary.

Xu Hongli was so exhausted that she was out of breath. She bent over and supported her knees with her hands. "I can't go on any longer. I can't walk anymore. Let me rest for a while."

Uncle Gu Wu glanced at her with disdain, then looked at Dahei and said, "Dahei is hungry too, so let's take a rest."

After saying that, he took a bundle of hay from the ox cart and placed it in front of Dahei.

Xu Hongli was almost driven to tears by Uncle Gu Wu's disdainful look and words. After all, she was not as important as a beast.

Chen Qiangwei and the others held back their laughter, turned their backs and smiled silently.

Looking at the shaking shoulders of several people, Xu Hongli said unhappily, "If you want to laugh, laugh out loud. Anyway, my dignity has been gone for a long time."

"Hahaha..." Several people couldn't hold back their laughter any longer, even the indifferent Wei Sijue couldn't help but curl up the corners of his mouth.

The depressing atmosphere was swept away, and even my tired body felt a lot more relaxed.

Uncle Gu Wu took out a black flour cake from his bag and started eating it with water.

Seeing this, several people found a place to sit down and started eating.

Chen Qiangwei also took out two big pancakes, one for herself and one for Wang Xiaomai.

"Here, I'll keep track of it. Pay me back double the work points you earn."

"Don't worry, Sister Weiwei, I'm very good at work. I'll help you with the work when the time comes."

During this period, Han Qianshan also wanted to lend a helping hand to Wang Xiaomai, but Wang Xiaomai did not accept it. Her grandmother said that it is easy to pay back a debt of money, but it is the hardest to pay back a debt of favor.

Xu Hongli glanced at Wang Xiaomai with disdain: "You look like a bean sprout, and you're helping with the work."

Wang Xiaomai wasn't one to suffer a loss, so he immediately retorted, "I don't know who's been holding us back all this time."

Xu Hongli: "You..."

Seeing this, Han Qianshan quickly said, "Say less and save your energy to hurry on. Aren't you tired?"

After saying that, he glanced at Xu Hongli.

Xu Hongli: Anyway, you should just dislike her. It makes me so angry.

Xu Hongli secretly glanced at Wei Sijue and didn't find anything unusual about him. She breathed a sigh of relief and stopped talking.

After eating, Uncle Gu Wu asked everyone to rest for another ten minutes before continuing on their journey.

After more than an hour, just when Xu Hongli was so tired that she was about to sit on the ground and throw a tantrum, Uncle Gu asked them to take turns riding the ox cart in pairs.

Xu Hongli crawled and rolled to get on the ox cart first, and finally arrived at the Huaihua Brigade before dark.

Uncle Gu Wu parked the ox cart in front of two big trees that had just sprouted new buds.

"These two are the locust trees of our brigade. They were planted by our ancestors after they fled here from famine. They are over a hundred years old."

The five people were tired and hungry, so they didn't care about the centuries-old history. They just wanted to get to the destination quickly, eat and sleep!

Uncle Gu Wu drove the ox cart forward and said, "This is the intersection of our Huaihua Brigade. It will take another ten minutes to reach the brigade headquarters."

Chen Qiangwei and others' eyes lit up. What are they waiting for? They must speed up!

Several people cheered up and quickened their pace.

As we approached the brigade headquarters, a man came up to us.

Gu Aiguo looked at the few people that Gu Wubo brought back without leaving any trace, "Old Wu is back, thank you for your hard work.

Welcome all the educated youth to the Huaihua Brigade. I am the brigade leader, Gu Aiguo.

Chen Qiangwei and the others were already exhausted, but they still forced themselves to greet Gu Aiguo: "Hello, Captain Gu."

"Everyone must be hungry. Dinner is ready. After dinner, go to the educated youth camp to rest. This meal tonight is treated to you by our Huaihua Brigade to welcome you back home."

Several people's eyes lit up when they heard this. There was food to eat! And it was free!

Looking at the black flour pancake and the watery vegetable soup in his hand.

Chen Qiangwei: I really shouldn’t have too high expectations for free things.

However, the few people who were already extremely hungry still buried their heads in eating, eating black flour pancakes with vegetable soup and filling themselves up.

After eating, Gu Aiguo took them to the educated youth site.

The brigade headquarters in the educated youth site was a bit far away, and it took nearly twenty minutes to walk there.
