Chen Qiangwei was happy to go with Gu Aiguo, as she didn't want to have several people sleeping on a large bunk bed.
Gu Aiguo led the two of them for more than ten minutes and arrived outside a yard.
Chen Qiangwei looked inside and found that they were lucky because it was a brick house.
"Aunt San? Are you asleep?"
"I'm just getting ready for bed. What's the matter with being patriotic?"
Gu Sannai came out of the room holding a kerosene lamp. She was Gu Aiguo's third aunt.
His wife and grandson both died on the battlefield. His only granddaughter works in the commune and also married into the commune.
The journey is long and there are elderly and children who need to be taken care of, so it is good enough if I can come back to see her once a month.
Because of her relationship with her husband and grandson, everyone respectfully calls her "Third Grandma".
"Your family has a lot of houses. Bring two educated youth to live with you so that we can take care of you in the future."
Grandma Gu San lived alone. A few years ago, she caught a cold and felt dizzy. She was unconscious in her room for a day and a night. If her son Xiaowu had not discovered it and invited a barefoot doctor in time, the consequences would have been disastrous.
"No, too many people will make a fuss."
Gu Aiguo said without giving any room for refusal: "It's settled. I'm leaving first. You make arrangements for them."
Gu Aiguo said to Chen Qiangwei and Wang Xiaomai, "The conditions here at Aunt San are no worse than those of the educated youths. She's old, so you should take care of her from now on."
"Yes, Captain, we will."
"Hey, you're so good, Gu Aiguo, you little bastard!"
Gu Sannai was jumping up and down behind with a kerosene lamp in her hand. Seeing that Gu Aiguo had really left, she had no choice but to give up.
She opened the door and said coldly to Chen Qiangwei and Wang Xiaomai, "Move your things in. You guys stay in the room on the far right. Don't wander around anywhere else."
After saying that, she went back to the house with the kerosene lamp. There were four rooms in Gu Sannai's house, three of which were used for living and one was used as the main room.
There is a kitchen in front of the house to the right where Chen Qiangwei and her friends live, and a shower room is connected to the back of the kitchen.
Wang Xiaomai looked at Chen Qiangwei: "Sister Weiwei, what should we do?"
Chen Qiangwei took out a flashlight from the package, pushed open the door, and used the light of the flashlight to bring the things into the room.
The room was clean and tidy, with a 1.2-meter bed against the wall.
After putting the things down, Chen Qiangwei took out the bedding and made the bed, then took out a quilt and placed it inside.
Wang Xiaomai followed suit and took out a quilt from the bag and placed it outside the bed.
Chen Qiangwei sniffed her body and nearly fainted from the odor. She hadn't showered for three days and her body was already smelly. No matter how sleepy or tired she was, she had to shower before going to bed.
"Third Grandma, can we boil water for a bath?"
"Please replenish the water and firewood tomorrow."
"Okay."
Chen Qiangwei came to the kitchen with a flashlight: "You light the fire, and I'll fetch water."
Chen Qiangwei found a wooden barrel, scooped water from the water tank into the barrel, and when it was half full, she took it to the kitchen and poured it into the big iron pot. Wang Xiaomai skillfully lit a fire and boiled water. She had been living with her grandmother in the countryside, so these chores were not difficult for her.
"Sister Weiwei, the water is ready, go wash first."
Chen Qiangwei was not polite either. She scooped a bucket of water and went to the shower room. She hadn't taken a shower for a few days, and she felt that the dirt on her body could be as big as a football if rubbed off. She changed three buckets of water before she was clean.
After coming out of the shower room, Chen Qiangwei felt as if she had lost several pounds.
Then it was Chen Qiangwei's turn to light the fire. Wang Xiaomai went to take a shower. Chen Qiangwei dried her hair while lighting the fire.
After Wang Xiaomai dried his hair, the two returned to their room to sleep.
Chen Qiangwei quickly took off all her clothes except for one piece of underwear, slipped into the bed, sighed comfortably, and fell asleep in three seconds.
Wang Xiaomai followed Chen Qiangwei's example, took off her clothes, and got into bed. As soon as her head touched the pillow, she fell asleep.
I slept until I woke up naturally, uh, actually I woke up because I was hungry. I looked at the time and it was eleven o'clock.
Chen Qiangwei got up and dressed, and Wang Xiaomai woke up too.
Looking at the sky outside the window, Wang Xiaomai said anxiously, "Oh no! I got up late. I'm going to be disliked."
Chen Qiangwei was calm and composed. Although Gu Sannai looked cold, she was a nice person. Perhaps she had lived alone for too long and was not good at communicating with others.
Just like the grandmother she depended on in her previous life, Chen Qiangwei felt a sense of familiarity with Grandma Gu San.
"Don't worry, Third Grandma is still easy to talk to."
Old people sleep less. Gu Sannai had gotten up long ago and was now sitting under the eaves weaving straw ropes. When she heard the door open, she looked up and said, "Are you up? Come eat. I've left breakfast in the pot for you."
Chen Qiangwei raised her eyebrows at Wang Xiaomai and said, "Look."
"Thank you, Third Grandma, you've worked hard."
The two went into the kitchen and opened the lid of the pot. Inside the pot were four hot sweet potatoes and two eggs.
"Hiss! There are eggs!"
Chen Qiangwei and Wang Xiaomai each took two sweet potatoes and started eating them. Although they were drooling, they still didn't dare to touch the eggs.
After eating, Chen Qiangwei said to the still busy Gu Sannai, "Sannai, let's go to the brigade headquarters to get some food first, and then come back to get more water and firewood."
Gu San didn't even raise his head: "Go ahead, ask for more coarse grains, don't just think about eating fine grains for pleasure."
Although her words were cold, they could not conceal her good intentions.
"I understand, Third Grandma. Thank you for your reminder."
When educated youth went to the countryside, they were only given some financial subsidies by the cities where they lived, and there was no way they could get any food.
Last night, Gu Aiguo asked them to go to the brigade headquarters to collect the returned grain. Don't think that the grain is given for free, it will be deducted from their future work points.
Gu Aiguo saw Chen Qiangwei and the others and said, "Are you here? It's so late, I thought you had forgotten the way."
It was pitch dark and it was my first time here, so it's not surprising that I forgot the way.
"Of course not. I just took a little time to pack up. Thank you for waiting, Captain."
