Chapter 9 Good luck, free chicken

Chen Qiangwei washed rice and cooked: "Listen to Third Grandma and help her do more work in the future."

Upon hearing this, Wang Xiaomai picked out the four largest sweet potatoes from the bag, washed them, chopped them into pieces, and put them in the pot to cook with the rice.

When Gu Sannai heard Chen Qiangwei's words outside the kitchen, the corners of her mouth curled up and then drooped.

While Wang Xiaomai was cooking, Chen Qiangwei went to fetch water. There was a well in the yard, making it very convenient to get water. However, there was only one bucket, so Chen Qiangwei carried it back bucket by bucket.

The sweet potato rice was not cooked yet, but she had already filled the water tank.

When Chen Qiangwei was fetching water, she found a lot of green vegetables in the yard: cabbage, carrots, leeks, water spinach, etc., and she planted a little of each.

The south is great. There are so many green vegetables in March. If you were in Beijing, you could only eat dried vegetables and cabbage.

"Third Grandma, the vegetables you planted are growing really well. I'll pick some cabbage and stir-fry it to go with the rice."

"It's worthless. If you want to eat it, just pull it out. Water it more diligently next time."

"Okay, I'll listen to you."

Chen Qiangwei pulled out a large cabbage. The cabbage was so big that the three of them couldn't finish it in one meal. Chen Qiangwei broke off the outer leaves of the cabbage and saved the tender part for tonight.

Seeing a lot of dried chilies on the windowsill, he asked and found out that Gu Sannai and Wang Xiaomai could both eat spicy food, so he took a few more dried chilies.

Wang Xiaomai had cleverly lit the fire, and the spicy stir-fried cabbage was ready in a few minutes.

"Third Grandma is having dinner."

Wang Xiaomai set the table and put the two eggs into the sweet potato rice to heat them up.

"The eggs are for you, eat them."

When Gu Sannai saw the two eggs appearing neatly in her bowl, her heart softened, but she still spoke coldly as usual and put the eggs into the two people's bowls with disgust.

Chen Qiangwei picked up the egg, tapped it lightly on the table, peeled off the eggshell, and split the egg in half.

"Thank you for your kindness, Third Grandma. We'll each have half."

Chen Qiangwei is Wang Xiaomai's weather vane. Wang Xiaomai does whatever she does.

Gu Sannai looked at the two halves of the egg in the bowl and snorted coldly, "You're so nosy. You can't even eat in peace."

Chen Qiangwei and Wang Xiaomai smiled at each other and started eating happily.

Gu Sannai's eyes fell on the spicy stir-fried Chinese cabbage, her face changed and she cursed: "You silly girl, you're so wasteful, adding so much oil, aren't you going to celebrate tomorrow?"

Chen Qiangwei: ...I dipped the chopsticks in the food and put them down, but there wasn't even a speck of oil.

"Third Grandma, I'll get you two pounds of fat in a couple of days to make oil."

"No ability, but a lot of big talk."

Wang Xiaomai looked at Chen Qiangwei and then at Gu Sannai carefully, and didn't dare to eat.

Gu Sannai rolled her eyes and said, "What are you looking at? Are you looking at whether I can eat enough or grow taller?"

Wang Xiaomai muttered quietly, "...What's wrong with being short? Being short can save fabric!"

"What are you mumbling about? Why don't you hurry up and eat and find me some firewood? Do you think you can use my food for free?"

"No, I'll eat it right away. I'll find it right away."

Wang Xiaomai hurriedly shoveled the rice into her mouth, fearing that if she was too late, Gu Sannai would confiscate her food.

After dinner, Chen Qiangwei and Wang Xiaomai took their axes and went up the mountain to chop firewood. Before leaving, they asked Gu Sannai for directions.

Not only did Gu Sannai live alone, but her residence was also far away from the brigade headquarters. The two of them didn't meet anyone along the way.

It was very quiet on the mountain. The Chinese New Year had just passed and it was not yet time to go back to work. Everyone was resting and preparing for the busy work to come.

Chen Qiangwei instructed Wang Xiaomai, "Find some dead branches. I'll see if there are any dead trees."

"Okay, Sister Weiwei, I'll go right away."

The two walked around the foot of the mountain but didn't find anything. They probably picked up all the things before the New Year.

There was no choice but to climb halfway up the mountain.

"Okay, there are a lot of dead branches here, just pick them up here. I'll go around and see if there are any dead trees. If there are any, just shout."

After saying that, Chen Qiangwei walked and looked around with a machete, and found a dead, half-grown tree on the other side. It was bare and it was impossible to tell what kind of tree it was.

"It's you."

Chen Qiangwei raised the machete, and with a flick of her hand, the machete landed at the root of the tree, leaving only a shallow mark. Chen Qiangwei took a look at the machete. The blade was blunt and there were several small notches.

Sharpening the knife does not delay the chopping of wood. The ancients were right.

Chen Qiangwei looked around and found that there was no one around, so she took out a Tang sword from the space and swung it vigorously. The power of this sword was more powerful than ten swings with a machete.

"What a treasure! No wonder the old man treasures it so much."

She came across this by chance while looking for farm tools in Beijing City, and exchanged it with an old man for 30 kilograms of coarse grains and 20 kilograms of food coupons.

After chopping three times, Chen Qiangwei put away the Tang sword and chopped the tree a dozen more times with the machete to cover the marks. Finally, she pushed hard and the dead tree fell down.

As soon as the dead tree fell, Wang Xiaomai was heard shouting.

"Sister Weiwei! There's a pheasant. Catch it! Don't let it run away! Catch it quickly!"

It turned out that when Wang Xiaomai was picking up dead branches, a pheasant was frightened and ran out from the side.

Wang Xiaomai was overjoyed and chased after it immediately. The pheasant panicked and ran towards Chen Qiangwei.

Chen Qiangwei looked up and almost drooled. A piece of meat was running towards her. She raised the machete and aimed. The machete left her hand and the pheasant fell to the ground.

Chen Qiangwei curled her lips: Good luck, eat chicken for free.

"Wow! Sister Weiwei, you are so awesome." Wang Xiaomai squatted down and swallowed hard at the colorful pheasant.

She only ate two pieces of meat the size of a fingernail during the Chinese New Year, but she was still criticized from the first to the fifteenth day of the lunar month, saying that she was not careful about what she ate, and now she wants to take a bite of raw pork whenever she sees it.
