Chapter 16 Confrontation

Cheng Ersao was startled by her serious look. "What's the matter, Maizi? Why do you have to know who told me?"

"Because he spread rumors about me. I clearly didn't bring anything back, but he's still talking nonsense about how much fabric I brought. If I don't let him give me an explanation this time, then next time he says I owe him money, I have to pay him honestly, right?"

Cheng Maixiang knew very well that when she and Lin Jiayu entered the village, everyone in every household was busy preparing dinner. They didn't run into anyone along the way, so naturally they wouldn't say anything nonsense.

Seeing that Second Sister-in-law Cheng was hesitant and unable to explain clearly, Cheng Maixiang sneered, "Is it Sister-in-law Liu or Aunt Yang? Second Sister-in-law is hard to say, I will go and ask them myself."

Sister Liu and Aunt Yang have similar personalities to Sister Cheng. They all like to visit neighbors everywhere every day, gossiping about the neighbors endlessly, and even don't want to go home when it's time for dinner. Many respectable families are annoyed with them and don't welcome them, but the three of them don't care at all and enjoy doing so all day long.

In Cheng Maixiang's eyes, the three of them are truly the standard gossip trio of Shuangshui Village. If they were placed in the future, if the three of them hosted a gossip show, they might really be able to successfully debut in the center position.

Seeing Cheng Maixiang standing up and walking out in a huff, Cheng Ersao was startled and hurried forward to grab her, "What a shame, this girl, why would she go looking for someone for no reason? We're from the same village, we'll see each other every day, you can't turn against each other over such a small matter."

Mrs. Cheng is now getting along very well with those two people, and she doesn't want to lose these two rare friends because of this.

Cheng Maixiang turned around and said, "Since it wasn't them, then who told Second Sister-in-law? This news can't be groundless, there must be a source."

Mrs. Cheng's eyes darted around, and after thinking for a long time, she couldn't find a suitable person to frame. However, those fabrics really made her want to accuse someone, so she had no choice but to tell the truth, "Your nephew just came over for dinner and accidentally saw your bag was bulging, so he looked through it out of curiosity."

That's what I've been waiting for!

Before Cheng Maixiang could say anything, Cheng's mother said to her dissatisfiedly, "Second daughter-in-law, your son Aijun really needs to change his habit of rummaging through other people's things. Today he rummaged through his family's things, and his family wouldn't mind him. But if he takes advantage of it and rummages through other people's things tomorrow, that would be a big deal."

Cheng Ersao said nonchalantly, "Mom, you are making a fuss about nothing. My Aijun is a sensible child and would never touch other people's things."

Cheng Maixiang was completely enraged by Cheng Ersao's nonchalant attitude. She sneered and said, "I was wondering why I couldn't find the dollar I put in my bag. It turns out Aijun took it. Second sister-in-law, you are his mother, so you should pay it back for him."

One dollar is not a small number. In an era when a pound of grain only costs 20 cents, one dollar can buy five pounds of grain.

Mrs. Cheng was startled and her voice immediately became louder. "Maizi, what nonsense are you talking about? As an aunt, how can you falsely accuse your nephew of stealing money? My Aijun is really being wronged to death."

Cheng Maixiang did not falsely accuse Cheng Aijun. When she took out the money just now, she carefully counted it and found that there was a full dollar missing. She originally wanted to find an opportunity to teach Aijun a lesson and tell him not to steal money again. Cheng Ersao happened to run into her, so she took the opportunity to teach her a lesson and let Aijun remember it.

Cheng Maixiang said in a deep voice, "It's okay if you speak louder, sister-in-law. I think the neighbors would also like to know about Aijun stealing Aunt's money."

"Maizi, this is no joke. Just a slight touch of your lips will ruin your nephew's innocence. How will he live in Shuangshui Village from now on?"

Cheng Ersao's voice dropped eight octaves. She naturally knew the seriousness of the matter. If the neighbors heard this, no matter whether it was true or false, the villagers would spread it as a new story. If Aijun had a reputation as a thief, he would never be able to find a decent wife in the future.

Mrs. Cheng Er is still clear about this.

"Since Second Sister-in-law doesn't believe it, why not go back and ask Aijun if this is true? If he insists that he didn't steal the money, then I will go to the commune and report the case tomorrow. It's one thing for a thief to appear in this village, but he actually stole from our house. If this continues, who will feel safe when we go out?"

People in this era were generally poor and had no valuable belongings at home. Almost every house had very low walls and no locked doors, which was a typical way of guarding against villains rather than gentlemen.

But as the saying goes, even a broken ship still has three thousand nails. No matter how poor you are, there are still things in your home that can be sold for money. If there really is a thief in the village, the whole village will be in turmoil. If the thief is caught, the villagers have the ability to make him live in unrest in the village for the rest of his life.

Seeing Cheng Maixiang's resolute attitude, even saying she would report the case to the commune, Cheng Ersao began to believe that she was not lying. She quickly stood up and said, "Maizi, we still have to be cautious. Before the matter is clarified, let's not trouble the comrades of the commune.

So, you look for it carefully. You might have put it somewhere and forgotten about it. I'll also go out and ask that rascal. If he really took it by accident, I'll make him return it and apologize to Maizi."

Cheng Ersao hurriedly got up and left. As she walked, she turned back and told Cheng Maixiang, "Maizi, don't dare to report the case until the matter is clarified."

As soon as Mrs. Cheng left, Mother Cheng asked tentatively, "Maizi, this is..."

"It's true. I'm going to teach him a lesson this time and make him change this bad habit."

Cheng's mother immediately frowned. Although the theft was from her own family, stealing money was still stealing money, and the nature of the matter was still very serious. If Aijun was not properly disciplined, she was afraid that something big would happen.
