Chapter 7 What Does He Mean?

Until Cheng's mother and Cheng Maiqing sent him away with a smile, Cheng Maixiang still didn't understand what Lin Jiayu meant.

He clearly came with gifts to propose marriage, but I rejected him and asked him to be just friends. Yet he was so happy about it. Does he really want to be with me?

If he really wants to be with me, shouldn't he be upset when he hears my rejection? Why is his face so smiling?

If he doesn't care about his decision at all, why did he come to propose marriage with all these gifts in such a serious manner? Was it just to save face for himself? He really is a "warm man"!

Cheng Maixiang tossed and turned on the kang, unable to sleep due to irritability. Suddenly, she remembered that the gift Lin Jiayu brought was accepted by Cheng's mother. She immediately got up and went to Cheng's mother's room.

Mother Cheng was old and had a light sleep pattern. It was noon now, so she woke up immediately when Cheng Maixiang did this.

"Maizi, what's wrong?"

Seeing her daughter's angry look, she couldn't help but feel a little strange.

"Mom, did you accept Lin Jiayu's gift? I didn't agree to his proposal, so it's not good for you to accept his gift, right?"

Cheng's mother thought she came here in a hurry for something important, but she didn't expect it to be this. She couldn't help but shake her head secretly.

Alas, a girl cannot be kept at home when she grows up. When I agreed to be someone's girlfriend, I was thinking about them and was afraid that their parents would take advantage of me.

"Maizi, you don't know what kind of person Mom is. When has she ever taken advantage of anyone? Don't worry, I accepted his gift, but I also gave him dozens of kilograms of grain in return. They eat commercial grain, and most of the time what they buy is stale grain, which is far less fresh than the grain we have in the countryside. Is that reasonable?"

Cheng Maixiang suddenly felt a little embarrassed. It seemed that she really underestimated her mother.

"Mom, that's not what I meant, I..."

Before Cheng Maixiang could explain, her mother interrupted her with a smile: "Okay, I was a girl myself, I understand."

What do you know?

Mother Cheng pulled Cheng Maixiang to sit down on the kang and gently stroked her long hair. Cheng Maixiang's hair was black and shiny, as smooth and soft as a piece of black satin.

My daughter is really pretty, with fair skin, big watery eyes and a slim figure. Whenever anyone in the village mentions her, they will give her a thumbs up.

She was only seven years old when her father died. Although her father was a company-level cadre in the army, she had saved several thousand yuan just from the monthly allowance he sent back. After his death in the line of duty, the government would pay a pension every year, so the family of four did not have financial difficulties.

But as the old saying goes, there is much trouble around a widow. She had three children, but she did not remarry. She supported the family with her own hands, married off her two sons, and raised her only daughter.

But my daughter is grown up, and it's time for her to separate from her mother.

Cheng's mother suddenly felt sad, but she was immediately relieved.

"Maizi, what are your plans for the future?"

Cheng Maixiang has been thinking about this question since she returned home yesterday, and she already has the answer.

"Mom, I want to go to school after the summer vacation. I want to learn more and don't want people to look down on me for being uneducated."

This was indeed Cheng Maixiang's plan. If she remembered correctly, the country would relax the college entrance examination in a year, and she would take part in it no matter what. No matter what era, it was always a good idea to read more books.

Cheng's mother couldn't help but be stunned.

She originally wanted to ask her daughter when she planned to settle down with Lin Jiayu, but she didn't expect that she, who had never been interested in studying, actually had plans to study again. Could it be that because Wu Jiadong fell in love with the educated Zhao Linlin and abandoned her, she said it happily, but she was still unwilling in her heart, so she made up her mind to study hard.

Seeing that her mother didn't say anything, Cheng Maixiang thought that her mother was just like the country people, who believed that it was useless for girls to study, so she didn't agree with her idea.

Thinking of the time when the original owner and Cheng's mother had been together, Cheng Maixiang pressed her whole body against her, hugged her and rocked her, and said coquettishly: "Mom, don't you like your daughter to go to school? If your daughter has education, she can earn more money for you and be filial to you. Why wouldn't you like that?"

Cheng's mother was the one who fell for her tricks the most. She swayed her body to her rhythm and gently scratched her smooth, straight nose. "Okay, my daughter is willing to make progress, so how can I not want her to? Anyway, our family doesn't expect you to earn those few work points. After the summer vacation, I'll ask your eldest brother to send you back to high school."

Well, no matter what her reason is, wanting to study is always a good thing. Besides, if she has education, she will probably be able to stand up straighter in her husband's family in the future.
