"Didn't you ask someone to drink with you?" The man seemed a little annoyed and awkwardly put down his glass.
The atmosphere at the table suddenly cooled down.
Gu Yanbai then brought up some business matters, and the atmosphere warmed up again.
Having just finished eating, Su Nianxue and Gu Yanliu sat idly in the main room watching TV.
"Sister-in-law, why don't you go and get some sleep?"
"I'm not going to sleep. I want to wait for your brother to come back." He didn't know she had returned from the Su family, so she would probably have made a wasted trip.
Sure enough, after watching TV for only a short while, I heard the sound of a bicycle coming in.
She jumped up from her chair. "Why are you back so early?"
It's the middle of the day, so hot! They don't even know to rest a little longer.
"Didn't I say I'd pick you up? I was afraid you'd be getting impatient, so I went a little earlier." He didn't ask her what unpleasant thing had happened between her and the Su family.
He simply wiped the sweat from his forehead and went inside.
“I came back a long time ago, but you went to town, so I couldn’t let you know.”
Su Nianxue felt a little embarrassed, as she had made people come all this way for nothing in the middle of the day.
Besides, it's still so early, so I guess they didn't have enough fun today.
Thinking of this, she quickly fetched a basin of cold water, washed the handkerchief, and handed it to him, saying, "Wash it, look at all the sweat on your forehead."
"Is today some kind of special day?" He took the handkerchief from her hand and covered his face with it.
"What?"
"Why else would you be so attentive to me?"
"Can I pay you back?"
"You owe me, so you have to pay me back. Aren't you going to pay me back?" He removed the wet cloth from his face and looked at her with burning eyes.
Su Nianxue slightly curled her lips, "I can't be bothered with you, you're never serious! I'm going to sleep, I still have to make tofu later!"
"Together! I want to sleep for a while too." He poured the water from the basin into the yard with a splash.
Then, he took her arm and led her into the house.
"I only had two drinks at noon," he said to himself as soon as he entered the room.
The smile on Su Nianxue's lips never faded. "I understand!"
"I'm a man, my word is my bond. If I say two drinks, I mean two drinks."
Su Nianxue turned around, wrapped her arms around his neck, and gently touched the corner of his lips.
"A real man should keep his word, and you're the best."
"Is this a reward?" He raised an eyebrow.
"Yes!"
"That's not enough!" He wrapped his arms around her back, pulling her into his embrace, and his thin lips quickly met hers.
After a long while, he finally released her, his voice slightly hoarse, "Are you happier now?"
"Are you trying to make me happy?" She pointed to his flushed lips, her eyes teasing.
"Not entirely, I have to convince myself too!"
Because of the Su family's situation, we haven't had meat for days. It's not unreasonable for us to have a little minced meat now!
Su Nianxue rolled her eyes at him, "How could it be several days? It's only been two nights."
Is this all you ever think about?
"Wouldn't you have been suffocating before you got married?!"
"That's different!"
"Why are they different?"
"Before that thing happened, I had no idea what it felt like?"
Even if you have these thoughts sometimes, just bear with them and they'll pass.
Now that they can taste the deliciousness of meat, who would want to live that bland, watery life anymore?
As he spoke, his hands became restless, groping her body through her clothes.
"All you do all day is spout these fallacies."
Gu Yanbai smiled, unusually refraining from arguing with her, and then changed the subject.
"Tell me, did Wang Lanhua bully you again?"
"Why didn't you even have lunch before rushing back?"
Su Nianxue shook her head. "It wasn't her, it was my dad."
Didn't you hear that last night?
"Wang Lanhua has practically emptied the Su family's coffers, and my dad asked me to lend him money to pay off the debts. But I refused." Su Nianxue said, glancing at him as she spoke.
"Oh, how did you refuse?"
One look at her expression and I knew it was related to him; he said he was very interested in knowing.
“I said…you don’t have a proper job either, and our family doesn’t have any money.”
As for the TV and washing machine, you bought them with money you borrowed from others. Is it okay for me to refuse like this...? " She looked at him intently.
"The first half of the sentence is correct; I never had a formal job to begin with."
"If someone asks you for money again in the future, and you don't want to lend it, just say so." As for the second half of the sentence, he understood the principle of not flaunting one's wealth.
"Okay, then!"
The two reached a high degree of agreement and prepared to go to sleep.
"Wife, don't you like watching the excitement?"
"I reckon there'll be something interesting to see in town these next couple of days." He said, leading her towards the bed.
"What's all the fuss about?"
"Are you stupid? Think about what kind of shop Wu Xiaomei runs?"
Su Nianxue suddenly realized, "Oh right, she owns a clothing store!"
Su Jiaojiao's husband owns a tailor shop; aren't they natural enemies?
Wang Lanhua flaunts her tailor son-in-law all day long; it's hard for her not to know.
"Is Wu Xiaomei's business doing well?"
Although she didn't like Wu Xiaomei, she genuinely hoped her business would do well.
"Business is pretty good."
I heard that they sold several orders in just one morning!
Wu Xiaomei had already mentioned at the banquet that there would be discounts all week.
I reckon the Wang family must be feeling pretty bad right now!
"Okay, time for bed. After I wake up, I'll grind tofu, and tomorrow I'll go to town to see what's going on."
