These words reminded him of his sister, Gu Yanhe.
Even though her husband's family lives in the nearby village, not far from her parents' home, she has hardly ever been seen visiting her parents' home throughout the year.

"Is it funny to see me get the short end of the stick?" Gu Yanbai stared at her blankly with a dark expression.
"When I entered the yard just now, I think I saw flowers blooming."
"You two chat, I'm going to water the flowers first." Seeing his expression was off, she quickly made an excuse and slipped away.
"Brother, I'm going to buy groceries too. I'll make your favorite... braised fish." Gu Yanliu followed closely behind her.
Gu Yanbai watched the two figures slip away side by side, gently curled his lips, then stood up and cleared the table of dishes.
Soon, the sound of bowls and chopsticks clattering could be heard from the kitchen.
The golden chrysanthemums and pink roses bloomed brilliantly in the morning sun.
The little flower, like a fluffy ball, kept circling around her feet.
Su Nianxue bent down and took a light sniff of the chrysanthemum's fragrance.
Then, I picked up the watering can from the corner of the wall and slowly watered the flower bed.
The courtyard gate was wide open, and a gust of wind occasionally blew in, lifting the hem of her dress.
The flowers trembled slightly in the wind, occasionally sending out a wisp of fragrance.
Gu Yanliu returned shortly afterward.
The basket contained a piece of fresh pork and three wild crucian carp weighing over a pound each.
Amidst the rising smoke from the chimneys, Su Nianxue prepared a sumptuous lunch.
Stir-fried fatty pork with green beans, loofah and lean pork meatballs, and a big bowl of pan-fried braised fish.
Su Nianxue picked up a large piece of fish and put it into Gu Yanbai's bowl. "Try it and see how my cooking is."
"Okay, you eat too." He was about to pick up some fish for her when he saw her suddenly move the bowl away and cover it with her hand.
She shook her head vigorously, "No, I won't eat these, you guys eat them!"
"What's wrong? Did you put poison in there?" Gu Yanbai put down his chopsticks and teased.
"Yes, it's poisoned! Try not to eat it if you dare!" She still held the bowl tightly in her arms.
"Okay, brother, stop teasing my sister-in-law."
"Her stomach was a little upset; she felt nauseous for a while after cooking fish for you at noon!" Gu Yanliu explained.
"What's wrong with you? I've never heard of you having stomach problems."
With a concerned look, he picked up her bowl and ladled her a bowl of loofah soup. "Don't you like drinking soup? Drink some soup to calm your nerves."
Also, if you can't stand the smell of fish, then don't cook it. It's not like you absolutely have to eat this fish.
"We've already done the killing, how can we not do it? Wouldn't that be a waste?"
Su Nianxue smiled and picked up the bowl, but only took one sip before putting the bowl and chopsticks down.
"Um, you guys eat first, I really can't eat anymore."
She got up to leave the table.
These dishes, which usually looked delicious, now seemed incredibly greasy to her.
Even her favorite loofah soup has lost its former appeal.
"You've only eaten so little, how can you be full?" Gu Yanbai frowned so deeply that he could almost trap a mosquito between her brows after she had only taken a small sip of soup.
"You guys eat first, I'm going out for some fresh air."
She covered her mouth and went into the yard. Only when she smelled the fresh fragrance of flowers did she feel a little better.
"You feel so uncomfortable, how about I take you to the hospital to get checked out?" He suddenly didn't find the fish in his bowl appealing anymore.
Su Nianxue waved to them, "You guys eat first, don't worry about me, I'm fine."
