Chapter 227 Reflections

Gu Yanbai and Zhou Mingjie quickly looked away; this old man was clearly using them as a pawn!

This old lady doesn't look like a nice person; they don't want to be taken advantage of.

The old man pleaded, "Mother, please bring me a thicker cotton coat tonight!"

Once I'm discharged from the hospital, I'll take good care of you. I'll do whatever you ask of me, without fail.

Besides, you can keep that cotton coat; it won't have any offspring.

If I really get sick from the cold, wouldn't that make things difficult for you?

The old lady's expression softened somewhat.

The old man seized the opportunity and immediately smiled ingratiatingly again.

Those eyes, which were already small, had now become just slits.

The two people in the hospital bed found it a bit too much to bear.

Just a moment ago they were all so arrogant, but now they've turned into a soft, crawling worm.

"I was planning to save that cotton coat for you to wear during the hottest days of summer, but I don't know if you'll live that long," the old woman said fiercely.

The old man felt a chill run down his spine; this was too ruthless.

But soon, he shamelessly said, "How could that be? You're just sharp-tongued, but you're actually very soft-hearted."

We've lived together our whole lives, how could I not know you?

I know I was irresponsible when I was young and that I made you suffer.

I'll make it up to you properly in the future, okay?

If all else fails, I'll be your slave in my next life, at your beck and call for your entire existence, okay?

After hearing some sweet words, the old woman's expression softened a bit. "You're smart to know what's good for you."

"If you still don't know what's good for you, I'll bring you a jacket tonight so you can change into it; you old codger, you'll freeze to death."

Gu Yanbai and Zhou Mingjie both shuddered; this old woman was too ruthless.

In the dead of winter, instead of giving people padded coats, they give them light jackets to keep cool.

Tsk tsk

What heinous things did this old man do when he was young to deserve this from the old lady?

Gu Yanbai gave Zhou Mingjie a meaningful look.

Zhou Mingjie whispered, "Why are you looking at me? And what's with that look?"

"Nothing much? I just feel that there are some things that we should... take as a warning."

"Gu Yanbai, why have you become so sarcastic lately? Would it kill you to speak properly?"

Zhou Mingjie lowered his voice and spat out a few words through gritted teeth to suppress the panic in his heart.

"I was just speaking from the heart."

"That's all." Unable to stand his sarcastic attitude, Zhou Mingjie picked up a pillow from the bed and was about to throw it at him.

However, looking at his hand, he silently lowered his hand.

The old lady was impatient. The old man still had the last bite of food in his mouth when she put the lunchbox in her net bag.

Su Nianxue and Yang Hongxing were returning from getting their meals when they saw a gaunt old woman rushing out of the ward.

The two quickly made way for her, afraid that she might bump into them.

Before they could even see her clearly, the old lady had vanished without a trace.

However, judging from her age, she was probably delivering food to the old man in the same ward.

Neither of them cared and went to the bedside.

Su Nianxue laid out the lunchbox, took out a spoon, and was about to feed him.

"Gu Yanbai, I got you some spare ribs. You've suffered so much, you need to nourish yourself properly."

"You eat first. You've been up and about all day, you must be hungry." He remembered that she had been saying she was hungry these past few days.

He rushed to the county early this morning, afraid that she would go hungry.

"I'm not hungry, I ate some pastries on the way."

When I left, Yanliu was worried I'd get hungry on the way, so she packed me a big bag of food.

"So, I'm not hungry yet." She patted the two pockets on her body, and sure enough, they were bulging.

Actually, she didn't eat anything on the way.

I was so anxious back then, worried about Gu Yanbai, that I had no appetite at all.

But now that things have settled down, she's not so worried anymore.

So she and Yang Hongxing ate as they walked to the cafeteria, and they weren't hungry anymore.

"Hmm, the little girl is quite sensible, let's give her credit for that."

Seeing that he was eating with relish, Su Nianxue smiled and said, "Eat quickly, it won't taste good if it gets cold."

"The conditions are limited out here right now. When we get back, I'll stew some pig's trotters for you so you can nourish yourself."

Gu Yanbai took a big bite of her hand and said, "Why do I feel like you're insulting me?"

"No?" Su Nianxue looked innocent. "Everyone says that, saying that you can cure a disease by treating the symptoms."

“But my hand is injured, not my hoof.” Gu Yanbai shook his two arms.

Su Nianxue smiled wryly. This person was so petty, thinking that she was making fun of him again.

"Then I'll buy you pig's trotters. Pig's trotters and human hands both have the character for 'hand' in their names, so they should be similar!"

"I think there's a pretty big difference, after all, one is a human and the other is a pig," Gu Yanbai said with a resentful look.

"If this won't work and that won't work, then you shouldn't eat it at all."

When I get back, I'll stew a big pot of pig's trotters, add some soybeans, and simmer them until they're fragrant and tender.

One bite, and it's so chewy and delicious.

I'll bring Yanliu along to eat with us, and you can just sit back and drool over the delicious aroma!

Hmph, I'll make you drool by then, and then we'll see if you can still find fault.

Gu Yanbai's Adam's apple bobbed. "Why shouldn't I eat it?"

Eat!

You two are enjoying your meal, and I'm just standing there watching? I'm not that stupid.

"By the time I'm discharged from the hospital, my hand will be all better. Then I'll be just as fast as you guys." He said, taking a big bite of the rib as if he were gnawing on a pig's trotter.

Seeing that he was eating with relish, Su Nianxue smiled and said, "Okay, when we get back, I'll buy more so our whole family can have a good meal."

"Hmm!" He liked hearing that.

Su Nianxue's eyes darted around. "Someone just told me to leave. If I leave, who will feed you?"

Or are you planning to have Yang Tianbao or Zhou Mingjie feed you?

Just thinking about that scene made Gu Yanbai shake his head violently. "I'd rather starve to death than let them feed me."

Su Nianxue: "Pretentious. You should be grateful that someone is feeding you. Why are you being so picky?"

If you ask me, who cares who feeds him? As long as he's full, that's all that matters. The food tastes the same no matter who feeds him.

“That’s right, sister-in-law, you’re right. It’s good enough that someone is feeding us, why are you being so fussy?” Zhou Mingjie was already annoyed that the two of them couldn’t even eat in peace.

At this point, I finally couldn't help but chime in.

The only sounds in the entire ward were the couple joking around on the surface, but actually whispering sweet nothings.

It makes others seem like they're mute.

"Zhou Mingjie, even food can't shut you up, can it?"

Since you're so easygoing, why don't you have your brother-in-law come over tomorrow and feed him? I think he'd be quite happy to.

Why is he always around? Why does he interrupt when the two of them are talking?

Zhou Mingjie stretched out his hands, "My hands are fine, I don't need anyone to feed me."
