Chapter 24 I bought you one while I was at it.

Seeing that Gu Yanliu was about to turn around, Gou Dan hurriedly ran into the yard.

He picked up the loquat from the stone platform and ran out in a flash.

Su Nianxue burst out laughing, "Yanliu, he's afraid of you!"

"Sister-in-law, you're still laughing." Gu Yanliu turned around and pouted.

Su Nianxue: "Okay, I'm not laughing anymore. Actually, our Yanliu is very good-looking, kind and beautiful. I don't know what he's afraid of."

"Sister-in-law, you're wrong about that. If I get fierce, even my brother is afraid of me." She said, showing off her big white teeth and trying to look fierce.

"Why does a young lady have to be so fierce?"

"If you end up like your second brother, you might never be able to get married." Su Nianxue pinched her cheek and smiled.

"If I can't get married, so be it. I'll stay at home and live with you guys for the rest of my life," Gu Yanliu said nonchalantly, popping a loquat into her mouth.

"Okay, then you can spend your whole life with us." Anyway, she'd much rather spend time with her sister-in-law than with Gu Yanbai.

The two finished weeding the remaining peanuts and then went to the old house.

The old house was smaller than the yard where they lived, and the walls bore the marks of rain erosion.

There are also finger-thick cracks on the wall, which look like they've been there for a long time.

Seeing her looking at the old house, Gu Yanliu took the initiative to explain, "This is the old house where my grandparents used to live."

The courtyard we live in now was built when my father got married.

My second brother renovated the roof a few years ago, and he had it repainted before your wedding, so it looks newer.

"Oh, I see. Then why doesn't Grandpa live with us?"

Grandpa Gu is over seventy years old. In the village, elderly people of that age usually live with their younger relatives.

Gu Yanliu said, "Grandpa raised a large flock of sheep, and the old house is spacious. He could just herd them back at night and lock them in the backyard, which was very convenient."

Secondly, my second brother hadn't found a wife yet at that time, right?

He also wanted to show people that he was still healthy and wouldn't be a burden to my second brother.

Grandpa Gu is truly a strong old man who makes people feel sorry for him.

"Sister-in-law, don't worry, I'm not a burden to you."

"When I get married, I don't want my brother to prepare a dowry for me."

Seeing how seriously she was talking, Su Nianxue chuckled, "Didn't someone say they didn't want to get married?"

Why are you bringing up the dowry again now?

"Sister-in-law, what they're talking about is very serious, and you're still laughing." Gu Yanliu stomped her foot and ran into the house in a flash.

"Why are you in such a hurry? You didn't even say you'd wait for me." Su Nianxue followed her into the house.

The house was a bit dirty and messy, and since the sheep pen was right behind the house, the smell inside wasn't very pleasant.

That makes sense. The old man lives alone. He goes up the mountain at dawn and doesn't come down until dark. How could he have time to tidy up?

They happened to have nothing to do, so they helped out.

The two of them worked together to clean the house spotlessly, even cleaning the sheep pen.

Finally, the unpleasant smell in the house was gone.

Taking advantage of the good weather, they disassembled all of the old man's pillows and mattresses, and the two of them took them all to the river to wash.

"Yanliu, Yanbai's wife, why are you washing so many clothes?" The aunt by the river asked, looking at the two large basins of clothes they had washed.

"Hey, they all belong to my grandpa."

He's so busy every day, how could he have time to tidy up?

When my sister-in-law and I have free time, she takes me to the old house to help him tidy it up.

Gu Yanliu didn't even look up. She sprinkled some laundry detergent on it and started washing it with the river water.

"You two are a good person."

Your grandfather has suffered most of his life; you should take good care of him.

The aunties all nodded in approval; this young wife was quite nice.

She not only works efficiently in the fields, but also cares deeply for the elderly in her family.

Although it might seem like a bit of a gluttony, it's understandable for young people.

Speaking of which, Old Master Gu is a pitiful man; his wife died at a young age.

She raised her two children single-handedly, acting as both father and mother.

Just when she was about to enjoy her retirement, her son passed away.

She's quite old now, and she's raising her grandchildren alone.

Fortunately, his granddaughter-in-law is a loving woman; otherwise, his life would be even more bitter than bitter herbs!

"That's right, my sister-in-law is very good to my grandfather."

Whenever we cook something delicious, my sister-in-law always sends some to my grandfather.

Once Gu Yanliu brought this up, he couldn't help but chat with his aunt about it.

"Yanliu, why are you saying all this?" Su Nianxue was a little embarrassed by being praised like this in public.

"I'm just telling the truth," Gu Yanliu said, but it didn't stop her from working at all.

The clothes were washed very quickly.

Upon hearing this, the village women's impression of her improved even further.

Gu Yanbai returned in just two days.

Su Nianxue was sitting in the main room sewing clothes when she saw him walk in and asked,

"Didn't you say you were going away for a while? Why are you back so soon?"

Gu Yanbai glared at him, somewhat displeased. "What? You don't welcome me back?"

"I didn't mean that, I was just curious. Didn't you say you were going away for a while?" She continued fiddling with the clothes in her hands.

"Is this Grandpa's?" Gu Yanbai asked, picking up the clothes on her leg.

"Yes, I saw that his clothes were torn, and since I didn't have anything else to do, I helped him mend them."

The old man spent all his time running around in the mountains, and he lived a rough life. He would casually patch up big holes and ignore small ones, letting them grow into big holes.

"Where's Yanliu?" He glanced around the courtyard but didn't see Gu Yanliu anywhere.

"Oh, she went to play with her friends." She continued sewing the clothes in her hands.

Gu Yanbai's eyes darted around, and he scooped her up from the bench and carried her directly into the room.

"What are you doing? You're being so clumsy in broad daylight, you almost pricked my hand," Su Nianxue complained, her almond-shaped eyes wide.

What's wrong with this guy? He started getting handsy as soon as he got back.

It's still more comfortable for me and Yanliu to stay at home!

"You pricked your finger, let me see!" He placed her on the edge of the bed and picked up her finger to examine it.

"No, I meant I almost got pricked." Su Nianxue pulled her hand back and looked at him irritably.

"So delicate!" Gu Yanbai said as he brought the luggage from outside into the room and placed it on the bedside table.

"Open it and take a look!"

Su Nianxue rolled her eyes. Why all the secrecy?

But she eventually unzipped the bag.

On top was a very delicate square box. She opened the box, revealing a women's watch inside.

"This is?"

“I saw this watch while I was browsing the supply and marketing cooperative, so I bought one for you.”

Gu Yanbai took out the watch and helped her put it on.

Su Nianxue looked at the watch on her wrist. It was a Plum Blossom brand watch, and there were only a few of them in the village.

Although it's now fashionable to buy the "four major items" (wedding accessories, wedding furniture, and wedding gifts) when getting married, most families still can't afford it.
