Chapter 23

Chapter 23

Ye Shu returned to Haishi that evening with Tao Zeqian. Before leaving, she repeatedly told Sang Nian to get a good rest and that she would come again.

As for why Liu Wenyuan didn't take Sang Nian back to Haishi, where the medical standards are more advanced, it's probably because he was frightened by Sang Nian's condition after waking up, so he didn't dare let Sang Nian return to that place that only left her with heartbreak.

Sometimes Liu Wenyuan thought that he was probably the person in the world who understood Sang Nian the most. For example, he believed that the most important reason for Sang Nian's suicide was the last investigation report he received regarding Qiu Yang's accident.

Unsurprisingly, the report will likely state that homicide has been ruled out and that everything was an accident.

He knew how important Qiu Yang was to Sang Nian, and he also knew that Sang Nian had probably persisted for so long just to avenge Qiu Yang.

But when Sang Nian discovered that the truth he had always adhered to was wrong, he lost the desire to live.

But he thought Sang Nian was too naive, though he also liked that naivety. The Sang family was powerful and influential; they had many ways to make someone disappear from the world, and there was no need to make such a big fuss.

Therefore, he always believed that the fire was an accident.

But seeing how heartbroken Sang Nian was, and considering that with his current abilities he simply couldn't dig any deeper, he decided to give up.

So he took action.

But the result was a huge surprise to him. He hadn't expected that the clumsy accident was actually orchestrated by the Sang family, though it might not have been clumsy, just bad luck.

The Sang family's original intention was only to cause an accidental carbon monoxide leak and poisoning, but they did not expect that the heater downstairs would happen to break down, causing a fire.

As a result, it became widely known.

Sang Nian lay on the hospital bed, his eyes lifeless. He didn't feel much emotion about surviving.

They simply resigned themselves to their fate.

He knew that Liu Wenyuan had been watching him. Several times when he went downstairs to throw out the trash or feed the stray cats, he could see people holding cameras in the corner.

The person Liu Wenyuan sent wouldn't be exposed so carelessly; the only explanation is that Liu Wenyuan wanted him to know.

So he naturally found out.

He never expected that he could be saved despite taking so many sleeping pills. Liu Wenyuan then told him with relief that many of the pills had expired.

How ridiculous!

You can't die even if you want to.

Ye Shu was probably afraid that he would do something foolish, so she actually dragged her suitcase over on the third day.

"I'll stay here with you and won't bother you, so don't worry about me."

This high-and-mighty only daughter of the Ye family was pampered from a young age and understood that the flattery from those around her was because of her status. Therefore, she didn't have any close friends.

Except for Sang Nian.

It's clear that Ye Shu genuinely considers Sang Nian a friend. Firstly, Sang Nian doesn't fawn over her like others do, and secondly, she has some understanding of Sang Nian's situation and feels great sympathy for his plight.

Thirdly, Ye Shu admitted that she was a sucker for good looks, and that being good-looking was a big plus. Sang Nian was the most outstanding-looking person she had ever seen, even surpassing his twin brother Sang Ning.

Ye Shu brought her work to Sang Nian's hospital room. When Sang Nian was bored and lost in thought, the background music was the constant sound of Ye Shu typing. He had always thought that Ye Shu's job was just that flower shop, but now it seemed that wasn't the case.

That makes sense. How could Ye's only daughter only run a small flower shop?

After Ye Shu finished dealing with her business, she would chat with Sang Nian. Usually, she would talk and Sang Nian would listen. If it weren't for Sang Nian occasionally showing some emotional reaction, Ye Shu would have thought that Sang Nian wasn't listening to her at all.

"Tao Zeqian is acting strange, you know? He's been incredibly attentive to me lately, it's so annoying, like a piece of leech I can't shake off," Ye Shu said with a hint of annoyance.

Tao Zeqian?

Sang Nian paused, and Ye Shu immediately realized that the surname "Tao" was a big taboo for Sang Nian, so she immediately shut her mouth and looked at Sang Nian with concern.

Sang Nian just shook his head and smiled. "It's okay, you can continue." He hadn't spoken for a long time, so his voice was a little hoarse.

Although he said that, Ye Shu didn't dare to continue. She got up, picked an apple from the coffee table, and began peeling it without saying a word.

Miss Ye has never lifted a finger since childhood, but this week she has learned how to peel an apple.

"See? I'm pretty good, right? This time I'll finally be able to leave some fruit pulp."

Sang Nian took the apple, which still had a third of its flesh left, and a smile flashed across her face.

"Thanks."

"Don't mention it, we're friends, there's no need for thanks between friends." With that, Ye Shu picked up another apple and started peeling it for herself. But she had only peeled half of it when a phone call came in urgently.

After Ye Shu finished the call, her delicate eyebrows furrowed. She glanced at Sang Nian and said, "Something happened at the company, and I need to go back now."

"Okay, you should go back now, don't delay."

"But..." Ye Shu hesitated, unsure of the reason for Sang Nian's suicide attempt, or even if he still harbored that thought. She had come here solely to watch over him 24/7 and help him resolve his inner turmoil, but this situation was complicated and she didn't know how many days it would take. If...

She glanced at Sang Nian again, and Sang Nian instantly understood what she was thinking. His heart tightened, he gripped the bedsheet tightly, and forced a smile as he uttered words against his will.

"Don't worry, I won't do anything foolish again."

Having received Sang Nian's promise, Ye Shu left quickly. After she left, the ward became completely quiet, with only the sounds of the medical equipment beside the bed remaining.

The silence was almost eerie, and Sang Nian couldn't stand it. When he was alone, he would always have wild thoughts. Images would flash through his mind, fleeting but clear enough for him to see the content of those images clearly.

When he returned to the Sang family, everyone told him that he had been abducted when he was six years old, and that the traffickers had taken him all over the country, and they had searched for him for a long time but could not find him.

Sang Nian used to believe it, but now he doesn't.

There's no better explanation than firsthand experience.

He was abandoned by Tao Wanru, and his accomplice was Sang Ning, the only person he could rely on when he was a child.

Judging from the attitude of everyone in the Sang family, they probably accepted this fact, because they also disliked this androgynous monster, and that's why they helped to cover it up.

The eleven years without him must have been exceptionally easy and pleasant for the Sang family.

If it weren't for Sang Ning's illness, he probably would never have known that somewhere in this world, there was a group of cold-blooded relatives.

These past few days, whenever Sang Nian thought about these things, his vision would blur and he would feel breathless. So he told himself not to think about it, but the more he tried to do so, the more things went against his wishes, and the clearer the scene of being abandoned that day became.

It was so stuffy, Sang Nian couldn't stop thinking. He glanced at the closed window, got out of bed, and opened it. Instantly, a cold, desolate wind blew in, scattering everything in his mind.

Sang Nian reached out, trying to grab the wind. But he couldn't grab anything. In desperation, he leaned forward and raised his hands.

When Liu Wenyuan opened the door, he saw this scene, which startled him so much that he immediately frowned. He wanted to shout to stop her but was afraid of frightening Sang Nian.

"Sang Nian, come down quickly." Liu Wenyuan tried his best to control his voice so as not to frighten Sang Nian. He had barely appeared in front of Sang Nian these past few days because he couldn't ignore the fear that flashed in her eyes when she woke up and saw him.

It was because of Liu Jinyuan that Sang Nian harbored resentment towards him.

Upon hearing his voice, Sang Nian's thin back stiffened violently, and he froze completely. Liu Wenyuan's heart leaped into his throat. He slowed his pace and walked slowly toward Sang Nian, saying as he went, "Ye Shu sent me here. She's afraid something might happen to you again. Didn't you promise her you wouldn't do anything foolish again?"

It was Ye Shu who called him, asking him to send someone to keep an eye on Sang Nian. Liu Wenyuan wasn't comfortable with the others, so he rushed over from Haishi.

Sang Nian didn't move, but the next second, he saw a leaf swirling in the wind, like a kite. Sang Nian remembered the kite in Sang Ning's hand in his dream, and felt a longing in his heart. So he leaned even further out the window, wanting to grab that leaf.

Liu Wenyuan's pupils contracted, and he took three steps in one, grabbing Sang Nian's swaying body in one swift motion. He roared behind him, "Qiu Yang! Don't you want to avenge Qiu Yang anymore?"

The leaf fell into Sang Nian's hand, crushed by his uncontrollable strength. Holding the tattered leaf tightly, Sang Nian asked, stunned, "What did you say?"

Liu Wenyuan carried him back, holding Sang Nian tightly with both hands, not giving him any chance to struggle.

“I’ve investigated, and Qiu Yang was killed by the Sang family.”

A tear rolled down Sang Nian's cheek; his face was full of disbelief, because he had also investigated the matter.

Liu Wenyuan knew, of course, that he wouldn't believe it.

“I have evidence.”

Sang Nian slumped on the hospital bed, watching the video on Liu Wenyuan's phone. One viewing wasn't enough; he watched it again. After watching it three times, tears streamed down his face.

He hadn't seen Qiu Yang for a very long time, and his image in his mind had begun to blur.

But now, Qiu Yang's face is clearly displayed in the video on Liu Wenyuan's phone.

Sang Nian traced Qiu Yang's face with his hands for a long time before finally calling out in a hoarse voice, "Brother."

"How did you get this video?" Sang Nian asked.

Liu Wenyuan poured Sang Nian a glass of water, but Sang Nian didn't take it. So he had to take the glass and reply, "I also sent people to investigate that accident, but the process was different from yours."

Liu Wenyuan didn't specify the exact method, only saying that the video was filmed and preserved by someone sent by the Sang family to kill Qiu Yang.

The man, holding a cell phone, broke into Qiu Yang's house late at night, turned on the gas stove, sneaked into the bedroom, took pictures of Qiu Yang sleeping, then closed all the windows and left.

"They probably intended to stage a gas leak and poisoning accident, but they didn't expect a fire to occur that night..."

By this point in Liu Wenyuan's story, Sang Nian could no longer hear him. His eyes were fixed on Qiu Yang, sleeping peacefully in bed with his eyes closed. His beloved brother had died just like that.

He didn't die in an accident, but from what he had always believed was human intervention, an order given by Sang Yu.

But why would they do that? Qiu Yang didn't get in their way!

The Sang family has truly disregarded the law and done such a thing.

In an instant, Sang Nian felt an overwhelming rage, his eyes burning with hatred. He had only one thought in his mind: to make the Sang family pay the price!

However, the video only showed that someone had tampered with it, but it didn't show that it was related to the Sang family. So Sang Nian asked again, "That person is still alive, right? Find him, help me find him, and then we'll call the police, arrest Sang Yu, and avenge my brother."

Liu Wenyuan met Sang Nian's sorrowful gaze and felt a pang of pain in his heart upon hearing his naive words. He didn't want to hurt Sang Nian, but he also couldn't let him continue to be so naive. So he opened his mouth and uttered those heartless words.

“Useless Sang Nian, what you’re doing won’t shake the Sang family’s position in Haishi. They’ll just sue you for defamation, saying your video is fake. You can’t do anything about it.”

"What should I do then?!"

Sang Nian cried out in despair.

What exactly does he need to do to repay the Sang family tenfold or a hundredfold for the pain he has suffered?

Suddenly, he thought of Wen Yan again, and how he had gone to great lengths to get close to him not just for his own selfish reasons, but also to make Sang Ning and Tao Wanru unhappy. Back then, making even the slightest bit of unhappiness in the Sang family could make him laugh heartily for a long time.

So he came up with a solution.
