Chapter 40
With a loud bang, dust billowed up on the road. The car parts, sent flying by the impact, scattered in all directions. Sang Nian didn't even have time to see what had happened before Wen Yan, who had rushed over, pulled her into his arms.
Wen Yan hugged Sang Nian tightly, murmured something in his throat, and raised his hand to touch his face, feeling somewhat relieved.
When the car headed straight for Sang Nian, his blood seemed to stop flowing and his heart leaped into his throat. He genuinely believed the car would hit Sang Nian.
Thank goodness.
Sang Nian rested his head against Wen Yan's chest, hearing the rapid pounding of his heart beneath his chest, almost in sync with his own. He had genuinely thought Tao Wanru was going to hit him with her car; he was so frightened he almost forgot to react until Wen Yan held him in his arms, at which point he regained consciousness.
He reached out and wrapped his arms around Wen Yan's waist, whispering in his arms, "Brother Wen Yan, I'm fine, don't be afraid."
Wen Yan rested his chin on the top of Sang Nian's head, nodded gently, pinched Sang Nian's cheek, and said with a smile, "You seem to have lost a little weight."
"Yes, I've lost a bit of weight, but I won't lose any more." The doctor said that being too thin is bad for the baby's development, so for the sake of the baby in his belly, he has to eat as much as he can to gain weight.
The two embraced each other as if no one else was around, as if the accident had nothing to do with them, until the sirens of police cars and ambulances sounded one after another, and they finally separated.
Sang Nian looked at the car that had been smashed to pieces, his eyes indifferent. Even though his biological mother was driving, she was also the mother who had tried to kill him once or twice.
He felt only hatred for her.
Another SUV, which suddenly rushed out from the side road, wasn't seriously hit. Because of obstructed visibility, the driver hadn't seen Tao Wanru's car, and by the time he reacted, it was too late to brake, so he crashed into it. Although it wasn't a good thought, Sang Nian felt that without that SUV, he and his baby would likely have been killed by Tao Wanru.
An ambulance immediately began rescue efforts, pulling an unconscious man from the SUV. Ye Shu and Xu Muze were close by, so they immediately recognized the man as Liu Wenyuan. Ye Shu covered her mouth and cried out, while Xu Muze looked at Wen Yan.
Wen Yan received the gaze and looked at the person on the stretcher, his brows slowly furrowing. Sang Nian watched Wen Yan's face darken little by little and wanted to turn around to look.
But as soon as he turned around, Wen Yan covered his eyes.
"What's wrong?"
Sang Nian asked anxiously.
Wen Yan shook her head and said, "It's too bloody. Niannian shouldn't watch it."
Sang Nian nodded obediently, clutching his stomach, wondering when to tell Wen Yan about his pregnancy. But now didn't seem like the right time. After the ambulance drove away, the police approached them. By the time they finished taking their statements, it was completely dark. Sang Nian had rushed from Dingzhou to Haishi Airport early that morning, and after that harrowing experience, he was so tired he could barely keep his eyes open.
The investigation was straightforward. Tao Wanru harbored resentment towards Wen Yan and, somehow learning of his itinerary, escaped from the mental hospital. She initially intended to run Wen Yan over with her car, but upon seeing Sang Nian, she changed her mind, leading to the incident. Liu Wenyuan's act of ramming Tao Wanru's car was unexpected. Although Liu Wenyuan had let go of his responsibilities, he couldn't resist coming to see Sang Nian when he learned she was at Haishi Airport. Therefore, upon seeing the car heading straight for Sang Nian, he didn't hesitate and slammed on the gas to meet it.
He wasn't seriously injured, which was Wen Yan's greatest relief. However, Tao Wanru's situation was less certain; despite emergency treatment, she hadn't woken up yet. Sang Nian had remained remarkably calm throughout the incident, as if Tao Wanru were a complete stranger. Only after getting into Wen Yan's car did he bury his head in his knees, his shoulders trembling.
Wen Yan looked at Sang Nian with heartache in her eyes.
“Brother Wenyan, she really wanted to kill me back then,” Sang Nian said in a low voice, his voice already hoarse and tinged with an undeniable sob.
Wen Yan hugged Sang Nian, gently patted his back, and said softly, "It's okay, Nian Nian, it's okay, I'm here. I won't let anyone hurt you." This was something he hadn't expected. He thought that sending Tao Wanru to a mental hospital was enough to settle everything, but he didn't expect that Tao Wanru would still be restless even after that.
However, she can no longer cause any trouble.
“She despised me, despised that I was neither male nor female, so she threw me away. I survived, and she must hate me to death. When I returned to the Sang family, she never gave me a kind look, but I didn't care about any of that. But, but today she actually tried to kill me... Sang Ning and I were both born to her, not me. I didn't choose this body. Why, why has no one ever asked me if I was willing, if I was happy, if I was sad? Why is all the blame placed on me?”
Sang Nian recounted her story haltingly, and Wen Yan's heart ached as he listened. He knew all the suffering Sang Nian had endured over the years, and he also knew that Sang Nian had done nothing wrong.
"Niannian, it's not your fault, it's not your fault." Any words of comfort seemed inadequate when they reached Wen Yan's lips, so he could only repeat these few sentences over and over again.
The sobbing gradually subsided, and the person in his arms began to breathe steadily. Wen Yan looked down and saw that Sang Nian had fallen asleep, his eyes closed, with two tear tracks on his face. Wen Yan tenderly wiped away his tears, then knocked on the partition and told Uncle Zhao to return to Dingzhou Manor.
He thought that he would be happy if he could see Qiu Yang the first thing he saw every morning.
He wanted Nian Nian to be happy, and he wanted Nian Nian to be happy forever.
The road to Dingzhou was eerily quiet, with hardly any cars on the highway. Wen Yan forced himself to stay awake, staring intently at Sang Nian's sleeping face. Suddenly, his phone vibrated violently. Wen Yan took it out and saw it was Ye Shu.
He answered the call.
"Did you take Niannian back to Dingzhou?"
Ye Shu got straight to the point, and Wen Yan gave a soft "hmm".
"And what about Niannian? Is she by your side?"
Wen Yan's voice was still very soft, "He's asleep."
“Okay, I’m fine, just checking on Niannian. He was frightened today, you must take him to the doctor when you get home, the doctor said he… he… is a little unstable, so, so…”
Ye Shu, usually quick-witted and eloquent, was unusually hesitant today, stammering and unable to speak. Wen Yan, already feeling unwell, thought Sang Nian was ill when he heard her say this, and his heart immediately jumped into his throat.
"Has she been sick every year?"
"Tsk." Ye Shu replied impatiently, then added, "It's not that she's sick, but Niannian won't let me tell you. Anyway, just do as I say, and Niannian will tell you the rest herself." She then slammed down the phone without waiting for Wen Yan's reaction, seemingly afraid that if he kept asking, she would inevitably tell him directly about Sang Nian's pregnancy.
Wen Yan frowned, not at all relieved by Ye Shu's words that "it's not an illness," but instead becoming even more suspicious. The car drove into the villa in the early morning, and Dr. Li, after receiving Wen Yan's call, rushed to the villa and was waiting in the living room on the first floor. Wen Yan carried Sang Nian up to the third floor, and Dr. Li followed closely behind.
"Mr. Sang, were you frightened? Are there any other signs?"
After examining Sang Nian, Dr. Li asked Wen Yan about her experience.
Wen Yan shook his head.
"He just kept crying, there was no other reaction. Dr. Li, every year he..."
“He is fine, Mr. Wen, there is no need to worry. However, he is in a special condition now and needs to rest and recuperate. He must not travel hundreds of kilometers back and forth again.”
"Something special?" Wen Yan seized on the wording in Dr. Li's words and pressed for an answer.
Dr. Li observed Wen Yan's expression and guessed that Sang Nian had not yet told Wen Yan about her pregnancy. Remembering Miss Ye Shu's instructions, he did not say anything more.
"Mr. Wen will know about the other matters when Mr. Sang wakes up." After saying that, he picked up his things and left the bedroom.
Dr. Li's words coincided with Ye Shu's, leading Wen Yan to suspect that they were all hiding something from him, something concerning Sang Nian, and something Sang Nian herself knew. He walked to the bedside, looking at Sang Nian's peaceful sleeping face, his eyes filled with an overwhelming worry.
So he didn't close his eyes all night, lying beside Sang Nian with his eyes fixed on her, afraid of missing the moment she woke up.
Sang Nian was exhausted after a long day, and his emotions were in turmoil, so he slept straight until noon. He slowly opened his eyes and saw Wen Yan's handsome face magnified in front of him.
Sang Nian curved her eyebrows into a smile.
"woke up?"
Wen Yan's hoarse voice came through, and Sang Nian nodded and said, "Good morning, Brother Wen Yan."
Wen Yan grasped Sang Nian's hand under the covers and said with a smile, "It's getting late, it's already past midnight."
"Ah, I can't believe I slept for so long." Sang Nian stretched and said to Wen Yan, "I'm a little hungry."
"Okay, I'll have the housekeeper prepare the meal." Wen Yan said as he got up and turned on the light. After the light came on, he was about to get out of bed, but Sang Nian stopped him.
Sang Nian took Wen Yan's hand. The bedroom had been pitch black, so he couldn't see Wen Yan's expression clearly. But the moment the light came on, he saw that Wen Yan looked exhausted. So he asked, "Brother Wen Yan, didn't you sleep all night?"
Wen Yan wanted to deny it, not wanting Sang Nian to worry. But for some reason, he almost started talking to himself.
"I was worried about Niannian, so I didn't sleep all night. Dr. Li came yesterday, and he said..."
"What did he say?" Sang Nian suddenly became nervous. Could it be that Brother Wen Yan was so excited about her pregnancy that he couldn't sleep all night? However... Sang Nian glanced at Wen Yan and found that his expression was unusually calm, even somewhat melancholy.
Does Brother Wenyan not like the baby?
Sang Nian's heart suddenly jumped.
“He said you’re fine,” Wen Yan replied. “But, is Niannian hiding something from me? Ye Shu and Dr. Li both spoke with hidden meanings; they said I would find out once you woke up.”
It turns out that Brother Wenyan didn't know.
Sang Nian was no longer nervous. Seeing Wen Yan's anxious expression, he suddenly chuckled. Wen Yan looked at Sang Nian in confusion, not understanding why he laughed. But then he realized that Sang Nian was slowly guiding his right hand, moving it under the covers until it finally stopped on his lower abdomen.
Sang Nian gently pressed Wen Yan's hand on it.
"Brother Wenyan, I'm pregnant."
Sang Nian said, and then he looked up at Wen Yan.
It's hard to say what expression he saw on Wen Yan's face; it seemed like happiness and excitement, but in the end, it was deep worry.
"Nian Nian, wait for me to make a phone call."
This was the first thing Wen Yan said after learning he was pregnant. Then he picked up his phone from the bedside table and called Dr. Li.
Is Niannian's physical condition suitable for pregnancy? Will having a baby harm his/her body?
Dr. Li gave a vague reply, and Wen Yan was stunned after hanging up the phone. He stared intently at Sang Nian, his eyes suddenly welling up with tears. Then he bent down and hugged Sang Nian tightly.
"I'm going to be a dad! I'll have my baby every year."
His hand trembled slightly as he touched Sang Nian's lower abdomen. "Is this our baby?"
Sang Nian raised her hand and hooked it around Wen Yan's neck, then slowly nodded.
"Yes, it's my baby with Brother Wenyan. Does Brother Wenyan like it?"
"I love it, I love it so much." Wen Yan looked into Sang Nian's eyes and said, word by word, "Thank you, Nian Nian. This is the second gift I've received this year. The first gift was you."
As soon as he finished speaking, tears streamed down his face. Wen Yan had never shed a tear since he was old enough to understand things, but today he couldn't control himself at all.
Sang Nian raised her hand to wipe away Wen Yan's tears, sniffed, and said, "Why is Brother Wen Yan crying?"
Wen Yan grabbed Sang Nian's hand, gently kissed her palm, and said with a smile, "I'm so excited, I couldn't help it. Niannian, you mustn't laugh at me."
"Hahaha."
Sang Nian leaned against Wen Yan's chest and laughed heartily.
"In a few days, I'll take you back to meet my parents. They'll like you. Shuhan and Shuyi like you a lot too. They've been wanting to meet you, and they've wanted to see you every day since they found out we're together. But I thought they were too noisy, so I didn't agree. My brother and sister-in-law never interfere with me; they don't care who I'm with. So, Niannian, let's get married, okay? After Qiuyang wakes up, we'll leave here and find a place you and Qiuyang both like to settle down, alright?"
"good."
"No, you need to rest. Going to Haishi would be too much of a hassle. I'd prefer my parents come to Dingzhou to see you. The wedding can't be rushed; I want to give you the grandest wedding ever. Wait a minute, I need some time to clear my head. My mind's a bit muddled right now. Let me think about it carefully..."
"Brother Wenyan?"
Sang Nian interrupted Wen Yan's incessant chatter.
"Hmm?" Wen Yan looked down at Sang Nian in confusion.
Sang Nian blinked in his arms and said, "I'm hungry."
Wen Yan slapped his forehead.
"Yes, yes, you're hungry. I'll go ask the nanny to prepare something to eat. You go wash up first." Wen Yan let go of Sang Nian and turned to walk towards the door, muttering to herself as she went, "I wonder what pregnant women should eat to get enough nutrition. I need to find some recipes for the nanny to learn how to make..."
Watching Wen Yan's departing figure, Sang Nian felt a warm current rise in his heart. He had never been expected of anything before, but now he was being cared for so tenderly. He was satisfied and content.
There will be no more Sang family, only him, Brother Wen Yan, and Brother Qiu Yang.
besides……
Sang Nian lowered her head to look at her lower abdomen, her eyes filled with tenderness.
And his baby with Wen Yan.
They will always be happy together.
