Chapter 6
Sang Nian recovered from his illness a week later, and Sang Yu took him to the hospital again under the pretext of a follow-up examination. Knowing what he was going to do, Sang Nian was unwilling but powerless to object. He was like a puppet on a string, unable to escape or hide.
Because his own strength was too insignificant, and no one could help him.
After the check-up, he was again assigned to Sang Ke's office. This time, however, he didn't just stand there dumbfounded; instead, he pushed open the door and left after Sang Ke departed.
Private hospitals are completely different from public hospitals; they're quiet and not crowded. Everyone has a radiant smile on their face, as if they're not sick or hospitalized at all, but just on vacation.
Sang Nian, dressed in a hospital gown with a white down jacket over it, moved about without difficulty. He wandered aimlessly through the hospital, unknowingly stumbling upon a more secluded and quiet area.
It was a detached courtyard house, located behind the hospital garden. Sang Nian became interested in this courtyard house, which seemed out of place in the hospital. He walked closer and looked through the floor-to-ceiling windows to see the scene inside.
With just one glance, his already faint smile froze on his face.
The woman who used to avoid him and should have been preparing for her art exhibition was now sitting beside the bed of the person with the same face as him, who should have been in school, with a gentle smile that Sang Ning had never seen before. She was peeling an apple for him. Her hands were fair and slender, and her movements were gentle and elegant. After peeling the apple, she cut it into small pieces, picked up a fork, and fed a piece to Sang Ning with a smile.
That was a scene that Sang Nian had dreamed about more than once when she was still Qiu Momo, but seeing it in real life, Sang Nian found it too glaring.
He closed his eyes, then turned and left.
He guessed correctly; Sang Ning did indeed live here.
On the way back, perhaps because he was absent-minded, Sang Nian took the wrong turn. When he came to his senses, he realized that he had already walked to the artificial lake of the hospital.
The artificial lake was filled with lotus flowers, but now it was late autumn, and only withered leaves remained, a desolate sight. Sang Nian looked up at the sky and forced back the tears that were about to fall.
He had actually prepared himself mentally, and he didn't have much of a connection with this family, but seeing them for the first time still made him feel unbearably sad.
This shouldn't have happened...
Just then, a chattering sound suddenly came from behind.
"Little sister, come quick! There's a bird's nest here!"
"I see it, brother, slow down, I can't keep up with you."
"Okay, come here, I'll take your hand, and we'll go over together."
The sound came from afar and gradually approached, finally reaching his ears.
"Wow, it's Brother Sang Ning."
As soon as the soft, sweet voice fell, Sang Nian realized that his legs were being held. He looked down and saw two little figures hanging on his legs, one on each side.
The little girl smiled when she saw him; her voice was exceptionally sweet.
"Brother Sang Ning, what are you doing here? It's so cold outside, and you're wearing so little. What if you get sick?"
After hearing what his sister said, the little boy reached out his chubby little hand and took Sang Nian's hand, saying, "I'll warm up Brother Sang Ning's hands so they won't be cold anymore!"
The little girl followed suit and took Sang Nian's other hand.
Sang Nian's hands and legs were bound, and he couldn't move for a moment. His body was stiff, and he was about to say that they had mistaken him for someone else when a deep voice sounded from behind him.
"Shuyi, Shuhan, you've mistaken him for someone else. He's not Brother Sang Ning."
Sang Nian's heart suddenly skipped a beat.
He turned his head with difficulty, looking in the direction of the sound. His panicked and helpless eyes suddenly met a pair of smiling eyes. It was a very handsome face, with a high nose bridge, distinct features, and thin lips that were slightly pulled to the sides, revealing a bright smile that was just right.
It was as if a ray of light had suddenly cleaved through the gloomy sky and shone into the depths of Sang Nian's dark heart.
He noticed Sang Nian's gaze, his smile widened, but then his expression turned serious when he saw the two human-shaped pendants on his legs.
The two humanoid pendants looked at each other, then finally both looked at Sang Nian.
“That’s right, Uncle, this is Brother Sang Ning.”
The man squatted down, his long woolen coat trailing on the ground, but he didn't care. Instead, he stretched out his hands, and immediately, Sang Nian felt his legs loosen. In the blink of an eye, the two little ones had jumped into the man's arms.
The man stood up with a smile and turned to Sang Nian, saying, "Sang Nian, I am Wen Yan. We met when you were a child."
Wen Yan?
Sang Nian had no recollection whatsoever; all his memories before the age of six had vanished after that high fever. But beyond the lack of recollection, one sentence kept repeating in his mind—this person had recognized him and Sang Ning at a glance.
These days, even though Sang Ning never appears at the villa under the pretext of going to school, the housekeeper and nanny in the villa still subconsciously call him "Young Master Sang Ning" when they see him.
Even Sang Yu sometimes calls the wrong person.
He thought he wouldn't care about how he was addressed, because his heart had already turned cold. But when he heard someone call him by his name directly, his heart trembled uncontrollably, and his blood seemed to burn, surging through his limbs.
For the first time, he realized how rare it was to be recognized by others.
That was something that made him so happy.
"Uncle, why isn't he reacting? Isn't he really not Brother Sang Ning? He looks exactly the same."
Shuhan looked up and asked, her pure and innocent face full of doubt. Wen Yan gently pinched her cheek and said, "He and Brother Sang Ning are twins, so they look very alike. You should call him Brother Sang Nian from now on."
Shuyi nodded and exclaimed happily, "Just like me and my sister!"
Wen Yan smiled and said yes.
But Shuhan was still puzzled, pouting and saying, "My brother and I don't look alike at all."
Regardless, she still smiled and called out "Brother Sang Nian." Shu Yi didn't dare to fall behind and followed suit, calling Sang Nian "brother" as well.
Looking at their innocent smiles, Sang Nian felt a surge of tenderness in his heart, and he smiled along with them.
"Brother Sang Nian's smile is so beautiful!" Shu Yi exclaimed, stunned. Shu Han quickly added, "Now I can recognize that he's not Brother Sang Ning. Brother Sang Nian's smile is even more beautiful than Brother Sang Ning's!"
Seeing the two of them acting like lovesick fools, Wen Yan shook his head helplessly. Meanwhile, Sang Nian felt a little uncomfortable when she heard their conversation, and her ears started to burn.
“I…” Sang Nian had barely finished speaking when Wen Yan’s phone rang. He glanced at the screen, gave Sang Nian an apologetic look, and then answered the call.
"Okay, I'll take them back in a bit."
While answering the phone, Wen Yan played with Shu Han's braids, her every move exuding composure and elegance, a faint smile playing on her lips.
Sang Nian couldn't help but take a few more glances.
Wen Yan was very tall, estimated to be over 1.85 meters, making Sang Nian look like a stunted elementary school student next to him. He wore a gray woolen overcoat over a beige stand-up collar cashmere sweater, paired with black brushed trousers, and a pair of handcrafted leather shoes that were polished to a shine. With each movement, he exuded a captivating citrus fragrance.
Suddenly realizing he was only wearing a hospital gown, Sang Nian felt a little embarrassed. He tugged at the hem of his clothes and took two steps back, trying to create some distance between himself and Wen Yan. But before he could find a satisfactory distance, his whole body lurched to the side, and he was about to fall backward.
He completely forgot he was standing next to an artificial lake, and resignedly closed his eyes. But as expected, the cold lake water didn't drown him; he vaguely found himself in an embrace that smelled of citrus.
"careful."
Wen Yan hung up the phone and was about to say goodbye to Sang Nian when he noticed that Sang Nian was falling backward after missing his footing. He immediately reached out and pulled Sang Nian back to safety.
Wow, a hero saves the damsel in distress!
"Uncle is awesome!"
The two little figures clapped and cheered beside him, and Sang Nian's face immediately turned as red as a ripe shrimp. He stepped back slightly, creating some distance, and thanked them in a low voice.
"You're welcome," Wen Yan replied with a smile. "It's time for their injections, so I'll excuse myself." Ignoring the immediate look of dismay on Shu Yi and Shu Han's faces at the mention of injections, he grabbed one of them by the hand and practically forced them to leave. But they hadn't gone far when Wen Yan turned back. He reached into his pocket, then pulled out what he wanted.
"Reach out your hand," he said to Sang Nian. Sang Nian looked at Wen Yan, who had returned, and before she could process what was happening, she instinctively reached out her hand.
Palms up.
Then Wen Yanchao placed a piece of candy in his palm.
An ordinary White Rabbit milk candy.
After he finished, he made a "shh" gesture to Sang Nian, then pointed to the twins not far away and said with a smile, "Here's some candy for you, but don't let them see." With that, he turned and left.
Sang Nian watched Wen Yan leave until his figure disappeared from sight before turning his gaze away.
He looked at the candy in his palm and suddenly smiled. Then he clenched the candy and pressed it to his chest, his heart pounding strongly beneath his hand. His eyes welled up with tears, and Sang Nian took a deep breath, murmuring two words.
"Wen Yan".
After handing Shuyi and Shuhan over to his mother, Mei Junyi, Wen Yan disregarded the two little ones' heartfelt reluctance to part and prepared to leave.
"Mom, I'm going to check on Sang Ning."
Mei Junyi hurriedly comforted the brother and sister who were afraid of injections. After hearing this, she didn't even look up and said in a somewhat indifferent tone, "Okay, go and come back quickly."
Wen Yan touched his nose. "I heard that Ningning has found a match and will have surgery soon."
Mei Junyi frowned slightly and snorted coldly, "I knew you had ulterior motives for saying you were coming to accompany Shuyi and Shuhan to get their injections today. You'd better leave now, or I'll get annoyed just seeing you."
Wen Yan gave a forced smile, turned and left. As he left, he heard the brother and sister, who had just finished their injections, were back to their energetic selves, chattering away.
"Grandma, let me tell you something. My brother and I just saw a really, really good-looking person."
"right."
Mei Junyi: "How good-looking?"
Meaning: "Ten times prettier than Mom!"
Shuhan: "No, no, it's twenty times. Grandma, do you know who he is?"
Wen Yan couldn't quite hear what was said after that, but he just smiled and shook his head. In a daze, he remembered Sang Nian, whom he had just seen, and his brows furrowed slightly again.
Sang Nian was abducted when he was six years old and was only found by the Sang family a few days ago. Judging from his thin body, he probably hasn't had a good life these past few years. But now that he's back with the Sang family, they'll probably take good care of him.
He recalled the message Sang Ning had sent him a few days ago: Brother Wenyan, my brother has been found!
Although it was written down, Wen Yan could still feel Sang Ning's happy and excited tone at the time.
Sang Ning must have missed his brother a lot over the years, after all, they are twins.
With that thought in mind, Wen Yan arrived at the courtyard, pushed open the door, and smiled at Sang Ning, who was half-lying in front of the hospital bed.
"Ningning, I'm here."
Sang Ning turned her head, a joyful smile appearing on her pale face.
"Brother Wenyan."
