After Jiang Minghua and Jiang Mingjia came out of the Taoist temple on the mountain, Jiang Mingjia grabbed her arm, leaned close to Jiang Minghua's ear, lowered her voice, and asked in a mysterious tone:
"Hey, Minghua, what wish did you make to the old sage just now?"
The path leading down the mountain was difficult to walk; moss-covered steps stretched one after another. The mist that had lingered in the mountains was slowly dissipating, and a mountain breeze rustled through the pines. Only after Jiang Minghua had steadied herself did she reply:
“I wish I could be a rich second-generation who has been lost to the common people. My parents find me, but they are busy with their business and fly all over the world. They have no time to take care of me. I live alone in a big villa. My parents feel guilty and send me a lot of money. I will post on my WeChat Moments: I don’t need a lot of money, I need a lot of love.”
After Jiang Minghua finished speaking in one breath, she felt that there was no movement around her. When she turned around, she saw Jiang Mingjia's back already running quickly towards the Taoist temple.
"Mingjia, where are you going?"
"I'll go back and make a new promise."
Just as Jiang Mingjia finished speaking, a series of hurried footsteps came from the stone path behind her. Jiang Minghua had already caught up, taking three steps at a time, slightly out of breath. Jiang Mingjia was a little puzzled:
"Why did you follow me here?"
Jiang Minghua's expression turned serious: "I forgot to give you my ID number."
Jiang Mingjia: ......
As night fell, the nightlight in Jiang Minghua's room quietly turned on as the person in bed turned over. Jiang Minghua's eyelids twitched slightly, and under the stimulation of the soft light, she slowly opened her eyes. A tear quietly slid down her cheek. How long had it been since she had dreamed about her past with Mingjia?
As the warm yellow light fell, Jiang Minghua fell asleep again, hoping to continue the dream she had just had.
But that night, Jiang Minghua's expectations were dashed. She didn't dream of Jiang Mingjia; instead, she had a very frustrating dream.
She dreamt she was standing in an unfamiliar park, watching a beautiful couple sitting on a park bench. The man gently wiped away the woman's tears, and even from this distance, Jiang Minghua could feel the heartache in his eyes. Just then, another man strode out from behind her, his face full of jealousy. He grabbed the woman's hand and pulled her into his arms, his gaze coldly fixed on the man on the bench. She didn't know what he said to him, but the man on the bench rose dejectedly, walked to Jiang Minghua, and his handsome eyes flashed with apology: "I'm sorry, Minghua, Chuqing is in a bad mood today. I was just comforting her."
Jiang Minghua: ? No, they know each other?
Then she woke up. Jiang Minghua rubbed her head, feeling uneasy about the dream she had last night. However, when she looked up and saw the unfamiliar decor of the room, her eyes widened suddenly. A chill ran up her body from the soles of her feet, and goosebumps rose on her skin. Even her breathing became slow and cautious.
Where is she? She clearly remembers going home last night!
Just as Jiang Minghua was puzzled by the scene before her, a mechanical voice suddenly rang in her ears:
You're awake.
Jiang Minghua's gaze swept around, her fingers unconsciously gripping the corner of the blanket, trying to find the source of the sound in the empty room. But apart from the furniture, the exquisitely decorated room contained nothing suspicious. Goosebumps rose on her skin. Jiang Minghua took a deep breath, trying to stay awake, and asked again:
"Who are you?"
At that moment, the mechanical voice came again:
[I am the system; I brought you into this world. This is the world of the discontinued novel, "Bone-Deep Love: After My Death, Young Master Fu Went Mad."]
Upon hearing the system's explanation and the ridiculous book title, Jiang Minghua suddenly realized that she had jumped on the bandwagon and transmigrated into a book. But she would never open a novel with a title like this. Isn't transmigrating into a book usually about transmigrating into a novel you've already read?
The system continued to diligently explain:
[Your role is that of the female lead's best friend, Sa. You offer her tissues and a warm hug when she cries and is sad, comforting her and encouraging her not to give up hope, ultimately leading to a happy ending for her and the male lead. As for you, the author will assign you to the second male lead, Sa, who deeply loves the female lead, so everyone finds happiness in the end. However, this novel was so heavily criticized by readers that the original author, feeling fragile, stopped updating it and abandoned the project. Therefore, I hope you can help finish the unfinished story.]
After the system finished speaking, Jiang Minghua suddenly remembered the contents of her dream and the unfamiliar man. Could he be the devoted second male lead the system had mentioned? But why should she pay for someone else's happiness? Without asking for their consent, she inexplicably dragged them into the storyline. Was she the kind of person who would obediently follow orders?
She's not going to follow that kind of ridiculous plot!
She tilted her head slightly, her gaze fixed on a point in mid-air, a faint smile playing on her lips. But her beautiful eyes held no trace of that smile.
"Sorry, I refuse. Please send me back to my original world."
The system's voice remained cold and indifferent, stating facts in a businesslike manner, without a trace of threat in its tone:
If you refuse, you will grow old alone in this world, unable to return to your original world.
Upon hearing its reply, Jiang Minghua almost burst out laughing, but before she could retort, the phone on the bedside table suddenly rang. Relying on the memories of the original owner of her body, Jiang Minghua turned on the phone, and a message popped up:
"Huahua, your mom and dad haven't finished dealing with things here yet, and we might have to stay abroad for a few more months. Business matters always drag on a bit, but we'll come back to be with you as soon as we're done. Mom was worried you'd be bored alone in China, so I just transferred 100 million yuan to your account as pocket money. Use it for now, and let me know if you need more. Buy whatever you want, go wherever you want, don't deprive yourself. Even though your mom and dad aren't here, we're always thinking of you and love you, my darling."
Jiang Minghua looked at the balance on her bank card, put her hand in her mouth and bit it hard. Ouch, it hurt! She wasn't dreaming! Then painful tears slid down her cheeks. If this was the painful price she had to pay for not following the plot, then let her suffer to death.
Jiang Minghua: "I've decided not to follow the storyline. I don't want to be anyone's substitute or a simp."
System: [Then you won't be able to go back to your own world.]
Hearing this, Jiang Minghua didn't even look up, continuing to fumble with her phone. After glancing at the encouraging balances in her frequently used apps, she shrugged indifferently.
"It's okay if I can't go back. In my original world, I was an orphan, and my best friend passed away last year. I had no relatives or friends. I worked endless overtime, was a slave to my boss, and the little money I earned was barely enough to pay the rent. Why would I go back?"
Humans and machines are not meant to share joy and sorrow, but for a moment the system felt a pang of pity for her. Seeing her resolute attitude, it could only helplessly reply:
Then you won't get any help from me anymore.
Jiang Minghua suddenly discovered that this system had a verbal tic, liking to say the word "sa," just like Jiang Mingjia. However, the thought of Jiang Mingjia brought a shadow of sadness to Jiang Minghua's eyes. Jiang Mingjia also liked to use this verbal tic. To ensure the two of them had enough to eat at the orphanage, Jiang Mingjia went to great lengths to please the head chef, often following him around. Over time, she learned the head chef's way of speaking and frequently liked to say "sa."
After the system left, and she no longer heard that familiar catchphrase, Jiang Minghua felt a momentary sense of loss, but she quickly relaxed, leaning lazily against the soft headboard, her fingers unconsciously stroking the corner of the blanket, her mind already planning for the future. A slight smile played on her lips. First, she needed to stay away from the male and female leads, away from the so-called devoted second male lead. Away from the plot, she wanted to be a happy, wealthy young woman.
Before she could even begin planning her wonderful life, her phone rang at the most inopportune moment. Jiang Minghua stared at the caller ID "Wen Chuqing" on the screen and instinctively wanted to hang up, but her body's instincts made her press the answer button.
The phone call came through intermittent sobs from her best friend, Wen Chuqing, her voice hoarse and trembling, as if squeezed from deep within her throat: "Minghua, please... come save me..."
Her voice was filled with despair and helplessness, and an invisible thread tightened around Jiang Minghua's heart.
Her fingers unconsciously tightened around the phone, her knuckles turning slightly white. That voice... it sounded so much like her. For a moment, she was dazed, and the voice pulled Jiang Minghua back to that time. Back then, Mingjia had also asked her for help in the same way, but... but... it felt like something was pressing heavily on her chest, making it difficult to breathe.
She bit her lower lip, her voice unconsciously softening, with a barely perceptible tremor:
Where are you now?
After hanging up the phone, Jiang Minghua quickly got out of bed, casually threw on a coat, and went straight to the driver's room on the first floor, relying on her memory. However, when she knocked on the door, she was surprised to find that the family's housekeeper was also in the room. The two were behaving intimately, and when they saw Jiang Minghua, they hurriedly stood up from the bedside.
Upon seeing their faces clearly, Jiang Minghua felt her blood boil. The two men looked exactly like the couple who had killed Jiang Mingjia in her past life. In her past life, she always regretted sending their whole family to prison so quickly; it was too easy on them. They should have tasted the suffering that Jiang Mingjia had endured.
Now, when Jiang Minghua encounters someone who looks just like them, it's hard not to feel angry. Her body reacts faster than her brain, and she slaps the driver, Li, across the face, leaving Li stunned.
For a moment, the room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. The nanny, Aunt Qin, was the first to react, shouting angrily and demanding to know how she could hit someone so casually!
Jiang Minghua was stunned for a moment, but quickly recovered. Seemingly oblivious to the anger on the nanny's face, she shrugged indifferently. "So what if they hit me? What can we do? Blame them for having such damned faces," she said nonchalantly to the driver.
"Master Li, I need to go out for a bit now. Please get ready."
As soon as Jiang Minghua finished speaking, before the driver Li could even reply, the nanny suddenly chimed in:
"Miss Jiang, you still haven't answered me why you hit people! Besides, it's already eight o'clock, too late. Can't we deal with this tomorrow?"
Jiang Minghua raised an eyebrow slightly, a mocking smile playing on her lips, her tone cold and sharp:
"Aunt Qin, you have no right to question me. Besides, I was talking to Master Li. What business is it of yours?"
She paused, her gaze shifting meaningfully between the two men. Thinking of their past life as husband and wife, and assuming they probably were still together now, her voice carried undisguised sarcasm.
"Aren't you two from the same hometown? It's so late, isn't it... a little inappropriate?" Her tone was light, but every word was like a needle, piercing straight to the heart.
Jiang Minghua's memories told her that when Mr. Li came to apply for a driver's job, he tearfully recounted the hardships of raising his son alone. Jiang's mother, feeling compassion, took the father and son into her home, arranging for them in two rooms on the first floor. When the original owner first met Mr. Li's son, Li Xiangjun, he wore a faded shirt, had a handsome face, and behaved politely, quickly winning her favor. With the Jiang family's help, Li Xiangjun successfully transferred to Eton Nolan International School, with all expenses covered by the Jiang family. After the father and son settled down, not long after, Mr. Li brought back a rural woman, saying she was from his hometown. It wasn't easy for a middle-aged woman to find work, and since the Jiang family's original nanny had to return to her hometown, Mr. Li's fellow villager took over the job.
As the recollection ended, Jiang Minghua's eyes turned slightly cold. She knew perfectly well that this family was preparing to become parasites on the Jiang family, attempting to live off the Jiang family's wealth. Even Master Li was delusional, coveting the Jiang family's fortune.
Tsk tsk tsk, as expected, people who look like that are not good people. It seems that Li De's slap just now was not in vain.
If she weren't worried about Wen Chuqing right now, she would have dealt with this whole family first.
Aunt Qin and Master Li naturally understood the sarcasm in Jiang Minghua's words. Aunt Qin's face immediately turned very ugly, and her eyes showed undisguised dissatisfaction as she looked at Jiang Minghua. She nudged Master Li with her elbow, wanting him to say something. After all, he was Xiang Jun's father on the surface, and Jiang Minghua would listen to him.
Driver Li understood: "Minghua, for my son's sake, I won't hold the slap you gave me earlier against you. But it's so late now, let's go tomorrow."
Driver Li thought he could still manipulate Jiang Minghua as easily as before, but after hearing Jiang Minghua utter the word "no," his expression changed, and his attitude became more assertive. He adopted the demeanor of an elder and used his son to manipulate Jiang Minghua:
“Minghua, a good girl wouldn’t go out this late. My son Xiangjun wouldn’t like a girl like that.”
