Chapter 69: Both Ancestor and Ungrateful Child

Li Wenyi thought Ye Shuang was tired, so he quickly picked her up and carried her home: "How have you been lately, Mom and Dad? I'll be settled soon. How about I take you to town to live a better life together?"

Ye Shuang didn't care, it was all the same no matter where she was. However, judging from Li Mantian and Li Shi's recent behavior, they didn't seem to be planning to move to the town. It seemed that Li Wenyi's idea would be dashed again, so she casually agreed.

Li Wenyi didn't think anything of it and continued to carry her forward as usual.

Seeing this, a yamen runner nearby chimed in, "I never knew you had this side to you, sir! You and your sister have such a good relationship."

Li Wenyi looked at the little girl in his arms who was too lazy to even acknowledge him, then turned to the constable who had spoken and gave a wry smile: "This is our little darling. Is it just me who has feelings for her? You little ingrate."

Ye Shuang rolled her eyes, snorted, and ignored him.

Li Wenyi dared not have any other thoughts, and thankfully he had already arrived home.

As soon as they pushed open the door, they saw Li Mantian and Li Shi waiting for them in the courtyard. When they saw that Li Wenyi had brought back the yamen runners, they quickly prepared tea for them.

Fortunately, these men were all from the surrounding villages, and they weren't picky. Each of them took a big bowl of tea and squatted down in a cool, comfortable spot.

"Father and Mother, let them find a place to rest. I have something I want to discuss with you." Li Wenyi put Ye Shuang on the ground and casually patted Bai Xue, who had run to his feet.

Li Mantian and Li Shi exchanged a glance, and could only listen to the boy for now. The family reunited in the main room, and to everyone's surprise, Li Wenyi was dressed in official robes. No one expected such a scene to happen.

"Speak, what is it?" Even if he was an official, he was still his son. Li Mantian sat in the head seat and looked at his son sitting below him, asking casually.

Li Wenyi looked at Li Shi before saying to Li Mantian, "Father, I've settled down in town now, and I'd like to bring you two to live here. You've worked so hard for so many years, it's time for me to properly fulfill my filial duties."

To be honest, Li Mantian was quite moved. He hadn't expected that he would actually live to see this day. However, he said, "We appreciate your filial piety, but it's not necessary to move to the town. Your mother and I have lived in the village all our lives and are used to it. We've already discussed it. You can stay in the town and be a good official, while we'll live a good life in the village. Shuang'er is here with us now, and we're both still able to work. There's really nothing to worry about."

Li Wenyi, who had initially thought things would go smoothly, was taken aback. It took him a while to react before he said, "Father, but if I go back to the county government, I'm afraid we won't see each other for a long time. Won't you miss me? Mother, are you really at ease leaving me alone in the county government?"

“You’re all grown up now, what’s there to worry about? Besides, it’s better if you’re not home, at least it saves us from being annoyed by someone every day.” Li Mantian interrupted Li Wenyi’s sentimental speech in an annoyed tone. “Alright, things aren’t easy at the county office either, are they? Hurry up and go back to your work.”

Li Wenyi gave a bitter smile, looked at Li Shi, and received a look of approval in return. He was overwhelmed with mixed feelings. Other families, when someone passed the imperial examination and became an official, would announce it to the world. Only his family remained unchanged. He didn't know whether he should be gratified or saddened.
