Chapter 1 The Supreme Heavenly Age
The old ancestor was determined to die.
The newly appointed Emperor Bai Yanxing has been processing one piece of information.
It was his priest, Duan Jiuyou, who had just accompanied him to the coronation ceremony yesterday, who jumped off the cliff.
He repeatedly recalled his time with her, from the time they met until now, a total of three days.
On the first day, he fought against Emperor Jiang, the Lord of the Great Wilderness. It was a battle for survival between the two races, and whoever won would become the Lord of the Three Realms.
Jiuyou helped him, which enabled him to win and seal the imperial territory with the power of Zhanlu.
The next day, she woke up and asked him when he would ascend the throne. He was a simple man who disliked extravagance; the grand ceremony was merely a formality to him, so he decided to hold it that very day.
Duan Jiuyou was appointed as a first-rank divine official, second only to the emperor and above all other officials.
On the third day, she decided to end her life. She jumped off the cliff of the hanging staff without hesitation. This place is also known as the Immortal's Tomb. Immortals who jump off there are never left with a single hair.
But what puzzled him at this moment was not just these things, but that the person who jumped from this place was now climbing back up with a head full of blood.
Many people rushed forward to call her "Ancestor". They were her disciples. Knowing that she was going to die, they had put on mourning clothes and made several wreaths in advance.
They surrounded her, their faces showing not relief at surviving the ordeal, but deep shock.
How come he didn't die?
Everyone's expressions were conveying this message.
Including Duan Jiuyou himself.
"Please don't be angry. Think about what went wrong in the process," a disciple said.
"My head exploded." That was Duan Jiuyou's voice. "It healed in no time."
"Isn't that the same as before?" the disciple asked.
"right."
"Did you fall in the wrong direction?"
"You can't land feet first, can you? You might as well get smashed on the head and die faster..."
They were so engrossed in their conversation that they didn't notice the increasingly dark expressions on the faces of the court officials.
Bai Yanxing saw several senior officials with canes coming to argue with her. The Heavenly Realm had just been established and a high-ranking official had already committed suicide. Wasn't this just taking lives?
Bai Yanxing observed Duan Jiuyou through the throng of people. His appearance was truly appalling, with his brows furrowed, hands on his hips, and his face covered in hair and blood.
The old ministers chattered amongst themselves, but she didn't listen to a word. After brooding for a while, she walked away, completely oblivious to everyone else.
The old folks were furious.
"Does she even respect the Emperor, or the laws governing the court? Who does she think she is—"
Who do you think she is?
Bai Yanxing had someone bring him a chair so he could listen, watch, and think at the same time.
Duan Jiuyou is indeed a very powerful figure.
The first one is the ancestor of the Ao Sect. She was the founding patriarch of this sect. Because she lived for so long, she never stopped, so much so that the Ao Sect has gone through the wilderness, the ancient times, and the prosperous era for a total of 78.94 million years, and she is still the only sect leader.
Secondly, there is her true form, whose full name is the Giant Turtle of the Great Qi Mountain, also known as the Giant Turtle of the Great Qi Mountain. In her eyes, millions of years are but a drop in the ocean.
Secondly, there is her position: the First God of Heaven, with the title of Supreme Heavenly Emperor. From the first emperor to the present nine emperors, she has always been appointed as the chief god. No matter how dynasties change or who is in charge, Duan Jiuyou has always been the undisputed number one in the celestial ranks.
Is 9game any good? Opinions vary.
Their clan doesn't practice offensive magic; they fight entirely with themselves as weapons. Their massive bodies can withstand all magic in the world, and even if injured, they heal quickly. She has no vital points; in the end, either she'll be killed by a collision or worn down by exhaustion.
Bai Yanxing had witnessed this scene just two days ago.
The desolate lord Dijiang was surrounded and killed by the Great Qi clan using a formation of giant turtles, crashing into the Tianshui Stone Wall. Even now, thinking about such a scene is still awe-inspiring.
What is the Heavenly Water Stone Wall? It is the hardest stone in the Three Realms. Back then, the Spirit Gathering God wanted to use it to forge a sword, but after using countless divine weapons to cut it, he only got a few scraps.
The collision with Jiuyou resulted in a huge crater.
Who is Di Jiang? He is the most powerful god after the war of the gods. Although they had been fighting each other for months, no one expected that Duan Jiuyou could end the battle in the blink of an eye.
Bai Yanxing was lost in thought and remained silent for a long time, so much so that the courtiers thought he was sulking and asked, putting themselves in his shoes, if he was thinking about how to deal with Duan Jiuyou.
They were divided into two factions: one suggested severe punishment—reducing her power and demotion; the other hoped to win her over with virtue and talk to her.
Want to talk?
Bai Yanxing smiled.
Whose teachings would someone who dares to choose the Lord of Heaven during a war between two races listen to?
Seeing that he didn't react much, the senior officials pressed on, "Duan Jiuyou has disregarded the rules for officials. Does Your Majesty not intend to pursue this matter?"
"What are you investigating?" Bai Yanxing said with a faint smile, but the warning in his eyes was already very strong.
He didn't care about any of that and didn't intend to do anything about it, but he was indeed a little unhappy that she just left like that. Was she taking advantage of his young age? She didn't even say goodbye.
But more than anything, he wanted to know why she had to die.
"I've had enough of living."
Later, Bai Yanxing went to Dixi Mountain to see Jiuyou and received a very direct answer.
It was dark when she sat in the courtyard, a soft cloud beneath her. She had thrown herself onto it in a posture reminiscent of an old grandmaster, her long hair spreading out across the cloud-like chair, her head resting back. A dim bamboo lantern hung in the distance, illuminating not her face, but revealing only a pair of slender, fair hands resting on what appeared to be an armrest.
The clouds moved gently up and down, in rhythm with her fingers, like an obedient rocking chair.
“Seventy million years,” she continued, “Even a stone would be tired of living by then.”
She asked Bai Yanxing, "How old are you this year?"
Bai Yanxing said, "Twenty-six thousand years old."
"Without experiencing too many years, I don't know what it feels like to not see the end." Jiuyou's voice was ethereal, like the wind lingering in the night. "Celestial beings have a lifespan, they will grow old and die, just slower than mortals. I am extremely slow, so slow that the graves of my old friends are overgrown with weeds, yet they still show no signs of dying."
She stretched out an arm, gesturing for him to look at the grave mound in the yard, where it was uneven and overgrown with weeds taller than a person. Bai Yanxing had always thought it was a bamboo grove, but now it seemed it really needed to be cleared.
She said, "These old folks are so cunning. When they swore brotherhood, they all said they didn't ask to be born on the same day, month, and year, but they asked to die on the same day, month, and year. They hoped to live as long as me, but they didn't know that I hoped these short-lived ghosts would take me away. Unfortunately, none of them are as lucky as me."
She spoke with the air of an elder, but her voice was a lazy, soft bird's voice, with a slight nasal tone, supposedly because she jumped into the sea after returning and choked on the water.
Duan Jiuyou said, “Our clan is hard to die from. We have thick skin, thick flesh, lots of blood, and long lifespans. I am not a person who is indifferent to worldly desires. The Emperor knew that I would eventually live to my full potential. When he returned to the Thirty-Third Heaven, he left me with an opportunity. As long as I assist ten emperors to ascend the throne, I can decide my own life and death. You happen to be the tenth one.”
"The Venerable Emperor of the Divine Sect." The name was too distant, and Bai Yanxing recalled it for a while before saying, "The Lord of Prophecy, the opportunities left by him should not be wrong."
“But I won’t die now,” Duan Jiuyou said unhappily.
East of Xishan lies the Sea of Rebirth, which devours the hearts of immortals. She soaked in it for two hours and was perfectly fine!
"..." Is it possible that the Ten Emperors' Opportunity was just a joke by the Emperor?
Bai Yanxing wasn't sure about Duan Jiuyou's temperament, so he held back and changed the subject, saying, "The Heavenly Realm has always been ruled by the capable. I remember that the Emperor Zong's achievements were outstanding, but I don't know why he didn't become the Emperor?"
Jiuyou said, "He is a close relative of mine. There are rules in the Heavenly Realm that the Ao Clan cannot rule the Heavenly Realm, but can only serve as assistants. Otherwise, if one person becomes emperor and never dies, wouldn't that mean the entire clan rules the world?"
This is also why the Qi clan has been highly valued for so long. They pose no threat to the throne, remain loyal to the emperor, and are rare examples of pure and loyal ministers.
Bai Yanxing sighed, "The struggle for supremacy among heroes has its advantages and disadvantages. Once opinions differ, it becomes a chaotic battle."
This was the case in Bai Yanxing's generation. The thirty-six divine continents each governed themselves and all wanted to control the Heavenly Realm, which led to the War of the Gods.
This battle lasted for 600,000 years. Duan Jiuyou was initially interested in watching the battle, but later he found that it would never end, so he grabbed a handful of Sleeping Pills and went to sleep.
When he woke up, only Bai Yanxing and Di Jiang remained.
"Why did you choose me?" Bai Yanxing had always been curious about this question. He and Di Jiang were both young lords, and from birth to becoming lords, neither of them had a dream as long as Jiu You's. To her, the two were strangers.
"He has too much of a murderous aura about him."
The Heavenly Realm needs a benevolent ruler, not a tyrant. Although she dislikes the monotonous days and the endless wars, she is even more disgusted by them.
Bai Yanxing looked at Duan Jiuyou and felt a little like pinching her.
Her words were blunt; another layer of meaning was: she chose you not because you're good, but because he's terrible.
"My uncle would never lie to me."
She only remembered her own affairs. Although she had thought that the Ten Emperors' Opportunity was just a joke, the Emperor was, after all, her maternal uncle.
"Why not become immortal couples?" Duan Jiuyou suggested, but Bai Yanxing immediately countered.
Bai Yanxing said, "With companionship, there are more flavors, and perhaps life won't be so hard to bear."
"It's even less interesting," Jiuyou remarked.
She had a few boyfriends before, but none of them led to marriage. She seemed to crave love but didn't quite understand it. She was always weighing how long the other person could stay with her, which made the relationship too conditional and purposeful. Eventually, she got tired of it.
“Who can outlive me?” She patted her chest in anguish. “I was with him from birth to death. He’s gone, and I’m left heartbroken and unable to die. That’s not what immortal couples do, that’s what tribulation is.”
Bai Yanxing remained silent, because he felt that someone like Jiuyou was unlikely to be heartbroken for anyone.
"We can look among our own clansmen," he thought of another idea.
“I have lived with them for many years, and now I see them as just like this landscape of nature, as simple as a stone.”
"Then let's find something new, one we haven't known for long."
"I'm very picky."
"We haven't known each other for long, but we know each other well, and she's quite good-looking."
"There's no such person."
She was puzzled, and he gazed at her—on the day of the ceremony, the master of ceremonies read out the achievements of the new emperor as usual, and to her, he was not someone she knew well.
The courtyard suddenly fell silent.
A moment later, Bai Yanxing saw the clouds in the shadows move and Duan Jiuyou drifted over leisurely. She was beautiful and delicate, with a pair of charming almond eyes under her arched eyebrows. At this moment, she was frowning as if her eyesight was not good. Her long hair, which was draped behind her head, slid down from the back of the chair to her waistline as she straightened up.
"Which scoundrel gave you this idea?"
Bai Yanxing laughed, his body trembling slightly, and finally he laughed out loud.
He said somewhat helplessly, "I'm much younger than you, and I don't know how to manage you. You keep coming back to hurl insults at me, so I have to get back at you."
Duan Jiuyou looked at him up close, focusing on his eyes, nose, and mouth.
He was very handsome, and his eyes always seemed calm, but they were by no means stagnant. Duan Jiuyou once told his disciples that Bai Yanxing had a thousand troops in his eyes, but he just kept them hidden.
He knew how to show weakness and how to weigh things. Duan Jiuyou knew from the beginning that Bai Yanxing was a scheming person.
She didn't mind that he was smart; it's only fools who cause headaches.
Leaning back, she lay back in the clouds, gazing fearlessly at the stars and moon, and said, "Don't worry about it, we can't protect you."
She has always been this way. She said, "I understand that you want me to stay. Although the Heavenly Realm is settled, there are still the Great Wilderness Clan on the run, and the remnants of the Thirty-Six Divine Continents are scattered everywhere. There will always be wars to fight. You want me to protect Tian Sheng as you would protect the emperors of all dynasties."
Bai Yanxing bluntly stated: "Ascension to heaven requires priests, and so do I."
"Of course I know what you need."
She slowly floated back into the shadows. Bai Yanxing thought she was thinking, but after a while he realized she was eating something. She was holding a large pill in her hand and eating it bit by bit.
"It's a pity I've lived for others for so many years, it's time for me to die for myself once."
Bai Yanxing had a bad feeling about this and asked, "What did you eat?"
"Bone-Breaking and Soul-Devouring Pill." Duan Jiuyou chewed expressionlessly. "Let's see if it can kill you."
