Mu Qingyu glanced at Shen Guang's withered and festering legs, and for a moment she didn't know what to say.
“You are the first living person I’ve seen in the library since that bitterly cold night. Please, I beg you, take this child with you. I only have a few days left. She’s only six years old… She’s very obedient and quiet. You just need to provide her with a safe place. If you have any extra food, give her something to eat. If not, that’s okay too. I’ve already taught her how to find food in the city…”
Shen Guang looked at Mu Qingyu with anticipation. He knew, of course, that Mu Qingyu was a complete stranger to him.
If he could, how could he possibly entrust his daughter to a stranger? But he was about to die, and Mu Qingyu was the only living person he saw in the library. He had no other choice!
He knew that Mu Qingyu had no obligation to help him or his daughter, so he could only plead, plead with all his might. His tone was almost humble.
Mu Qingyu remained silent, watching the little girl who always behaved quietly when the adults spoke. A pair of clear eyes stared curiously at Mu Qingyu, then suddenly noticed her father was crying and reached out to wipe away his tears.
Mu Qingyu was conflicted. Reason told her that bringing along a little girl would inevitably bring trouble, even if the little girl was a superhuman, because she was simply too young.
The groups most likely to survive in a post-apocalyptic world are the elderly, children, and some women.
But she took all the food downstairs from the library, and if she did nothing, the little girl would soon starve to death there.
It wouldn't be impossible for her to return all the food in the library. But honestly, is it really worth leaving a little girl here, to spend her future with a corpse until she runs out of food and supplies and finally dies?
Mu Qingyu was struggling internally.
"Please, she's really well-behaved, doesn't cry or make a fuss, and can find food on her own. I'm not asking you to adopt her, but if possible, are there any human settlements? You could take her to a safe place where there are humans."
Shen Guang pleaded again. He hated himself for being useless, but he was powerless to do anything. Apart from constantly begging Mu Qingyu, he had nothing to offer in exchange for her.
However, when Shen Guang mentioned "human settlements", Mu Qingyu had an idea.
She tilted her head and thought for a moment before saying, "You know the theater that's not far from the library, right?"
Shen Guang was a little puzzled, but still nodded: "I know, my home is actually nearby, I pass by it every day on my way to and from get off work. What's wrong there?"
“There’s a temporary human settlement in the theater. The leader is Xiao Shiyang, an active-duty soldier. They’ve taken in many people there, and I can help you take your daughter there,” Mu Qingyu said.
“I don’t live there. If you are still alive and mobile in the future, you can go to the theater to find your daughter.”
Shen Guang was very excited upon hearing this: "Yes, Zhuzhu can go there. But will they take in a child?"
Mu Qingyu nodded: "Xiao Shiyang will."
"Then I'll trouble you. Please take Zhuzhu with you." Shen Guang said, gripping his daughter's hand tightly.
Zhuzhu was too young to fully understand the conversation between the two adults, but she could vaguely tell that her father wanted her to leave with the older sister in front of her.
"Daddy, Zhuzhu wants to stay with Daddy. Zhuzhu doesn't want to go anywhere." The little girl didn't cry. She held her father's hand tightly and looked into his eyes earnestly as she spoke.
Shen Guang realized he was using too much force and might scratch his daughter, so he quickly let go, cupped her face in his hands, and smiled at her: "Zhuzhu has forgotten again. When Daddy is busy working, Zhuzhu has to be good. Now Zhuzhu will go to another uncle's or aunt's house for a while and wait for Daddy to come home from get off work."
In the past, when Shen Guang was busy and had no time to take care of his daughter, he would tell her this before entrusting her to the neighbors. Zhu Zhu was always very sensible and obedient, and the neighbors all liked her very much and were happy to take care of her when they had time.
But this time, Zhuzhu shook her head: "Dad is sick and not working. Zhuzhu can take care of Dad. If Zhuzhu isn't here, Dad won't have anything to eat!"
Although she is young and cannot understand many things, she is not completely ignorant of everything.
Mu Qingyu sighed softly. She couldn't bear to see such a scene. "Why don't you two talk it over first? I'll go look around elsewhere."
Actually, she was just going up to the sixth floor. She was attracted by Chen Zhuzhu and hadn't taken all the books upstairs yet.
So Mu Qingyu left and went up to the sixth floor to collect the books.
The entire sixth floor houses a very rich collection, with books that are all carefully preserved, some even kept in locked bookshelves.
It took Mu Qingyu almost half an hour to collect all the books on the sixth floor.
Mu Qingyu also discovered three large water tanks on the rooftop of the library, which was probably the library's water supply system before the apocalypse. Mu Qingyu put them all into his spatial storage, which was an unexpected gain.
When they returned to the lounge, little Chen Zhuzhu was already standing in the room with a small backpack on her back.
The food that was originally scattered on the bed has decreased, and Chen Zhuzhu's small backpack is now bulging.
The little girl's eyes were filled with tears. She looked at her father and then at Mu Qingyu, and then cried, "Sister, please take me away. Please, sister. Zhuzhu will be very good and obedient, Zhuzhu promises."
Mu Qingyu could tell that Shen Guang had probably taught her to say those words. The little girl really didn't want to leave her father, but Shen Guang had somehow persuaded her.
